Fantastic Four

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

The movie might be a mess but not necessarily cause of reshoots, as that's a common production process these days with many big budget movies.

FANTASTIC FOUR Is Going In For Reshoots | Badass Digest
This article talks about Fox facing marketing problems for FF, similar to Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

I wonder if many are aware of this bit of character history.

devincf: I think it's ****** up that FANTASTIC FOUR will change things from the comics, like how Reed met Sue when he was 23 and she was 12.

sstarkm: @ devincf I know right? I wish Bryan Singer would've put Prof. X's crush on Jean in the movies. So inaccurate!!

Re: The Fantastic Four

I've read the whole interview and the movie seems like more a mess than before. An FF horror movie? Cronenburg influences? ....and then Trank says he wants to forget every influence he's ever had in his life.

I just don't get why they would chose to do a Fantastic Four movie like this...

Re: Fantastic Four Reboot

This movie sounds like it was designed by either someone with zero knowledge of the Fantastic Four (and zero interest in learning), or a committee that created some Frankenstein's-monster-like story out of one that might have, at one time, been ok.

That committee seems to be in charge of all Fox movies, especially the Marvel ones. We're not getting a good FF movie until Marvel gets their rights back. Hate to admit it but at least Fox does okay with the Xmen stuff aside from X3 and the wolverine movies.

Re: The Fantastic Four

I kept my optimism for the TMNT movie despite Bay's involvement, then eventually the trailer rolled and I was disappointed with the whole look of the characters and the aesthetics of the film. I was wrong being optimistic about that one and I chose not to watch it as it didn't appeal to me anymore.

We now just have to wait another two weeks for the trailer, then we all indeed can make a better assessment for The Fantastic Four.

If the movie bombs and the rights do revert to Marvel, there will be no FF movie at least until 2020. Like the upcoming X-Men series, Fantastic Four TV series could also have great potential. Hopefully the success of Daredevil will lead to more similar TV projects based on other Marvel properties.

I only read the first year of the Ultimate Fantastic Four. Like many, my fondness for the FF universe is mainly from the Jack Kirby era followed by John Byrne. So despite the young cast and taking certain elements from the Ultimate comics, if the movie is able to evoke some of the classic science fiction elements and family dynamics really well, the movie just might succeed while gaining the good will of some of the fans if not all.

Re: The Fantastic Four

It's getting more fun to crap on this movie than root for it.

And why should we apologize for that, really?

If past history is any indication, crapping on it probably WILL be the most fun part of the whole thing when we look back in a few years!

Hollywood has been saturating us with weak F4 & other superhero movies in general. They're the ones who made us such a tough crowd. They never issued any apologies & cash refunds for the other F4 movies.

I feel for the F4 fans. Just like the TMNT fans. And the Transformer fans. That's a different issue. I don't blame the franchises for the crappy movies they keep getting.

Re: The Fantastic Four

Okay, I've been really working at organizing my thoughts on this, so forgive me a little if this is a little disjointed.

I get what you're saying, Vivek, about wanting to keep an open mind. I would love to be able to do that. Unfortunately, I just can't at this point. There are just so many things that are detracting from my ability to get excited about this movie in any way, shape or form.

* Found footage. Can we just stop with found footage? I get that Chronicle was a big deal for Trank and it's natural for him to want to go with what he knows. However, found footage is not a format that encompasses the kind of scale that FF should have.
* Cronenburg. It seems like by invoking the name Cronenburg, these two are trying to establish their "geek cred" by letting us know they've watched some classic sci-fi films and want to bring elements into it. However, Cronenburg does not fit with FF. It's the Fantastic Four, not the Fly. Not Naked Lunch. Even in the Ultimate universe where things get pretty frakking grim, there's still humor and playfulness.
* Changing the background. Okay, here's where we get into the real nitty gritty of why Marvel Studios is succeeding and most of the outside Marvel properties are floundering. The bottom line is, Marvel Studios has made a real, concerted effort to update the classic characters, character who were, frankly, second or third string characters in terms of the comics' popularity, and make some of the most beloved films in recent years. The reason they've done this is that they really looked for the core, essential pieces of who and what these characters are and made minimal changes so that they would fit in the modern world.

By all rights, Captain America should NOT have worked for modern audiences... but it did because it wasn't afraid to stay true to its roots. It's an unabashed love letter to the "Greatest Generation" and to the ideals that America is supposed to have been founded upon. Captain America, himself, is, in many ways, a relic, one that should not be so beloved in an era where most of our popular heroes are, at best, swathed in shades of grey.

The problem that I see Sony and Fox as having with making these characters work for more than just the teenybopper crowd (which is pretty much the group that seems enamored of the Amazing Spider-Man movies), is that I think they're genuinely embarrassed by them. However, superhero movies are making money, so they feel compelled to cling to these properties, wondering how Marvel Studios can make it all look so ********* effortless. What they forget is that while there is a committee at Marvel Studios, if not all of them, then at least a LOT of them, genuinely love these characters and want to do right by them in film.

Re: The Fantastic Four

Maybe I missed it in prior interviews, but I didn't realize this is found footage too. I thought they addressed it before that this was not going to be a found footage movie. I am dreading that possibility now.

My FF sensibility is rooted in Kirby, Buscema and Byrne as well. I think Kirby's is unquestionably the most comprehensive and defining influence.

I respect your cautious optimism, but I remain skeptical. I won't try to convince you otherwise but there's nothing about this production that feels promising to me.

That being said, if FF turns out to be a film that faithfully conjures Kirby in celluloid for me, I will gladly devour a humble pie baked in your own kitchen.

Re: The Fantastic Four

Does the person making this understand how Roman numerals work? IIII is not 4, if that's their intent.

Re: The Fantastic Four

Apparently Matthew Vaughn has seen it: "I've seen the movie, it's good," he said. Vaughn even likened the reboot to Trank's previous movie, "Chronicle." He supposed that if fans liked the movie, then they're bound to feel the same for the reboot. "I thought Chronicle was a fantastic movie, and [Josh] Trank has gone off and done his version of 'Fantastic Four,'" he added.

that was a pretty tepid reaction.

Re: The Fantastic Four

Looks like the waiting is almost over, the trailer is going to be online later today.

Re: The Fantastic Four

... I don't see anything that makes me retch yet. But then, they didn't really show any story beats.
