Fallout Wastelander Outfit

*WARNING: PICTURE HEAVY POST*

Howdy all. I've never really done anything like this before, But seeing all of the awesome stuff up on here and the great tutorials that people have done, I thought that I'd try my hand and document my first real experience with making a costume. Just so everybody knows, this is not going to be a Fallout 3 'Wasteland Outfit' but rather an independent outfit that a wanderer would wear out in the wasteland (DC or otherwise).

First up is a watergun that I found at a toy store for $10AU. Looks like an AK-47 without the stock, and I'm thinking of modifying it to make it a 'whiipit' - adding a hanging strap so that it will hang underneath a jacket.

Here you can see the gun and it's ejectable 'water clip' pretty damn cool.

A close up of the inner-workings - not important for the conversion, but I thought that it was pretty neat. You slot in some batteries and it automatically creates compressed air so that you can consistently spray water. Pretty neat.

This is the full rifle, with the clip inserted.

More to come, but if you're interested, feel free to comment.

Next up is some of the other junk that I'm using to fill out the outfit. First up is a Computer board which i'm planning to sew over the heart of my coat:

I also did some drilling on the rifle to create a shoulder sling.

You can see here how I accidentally messed up with one of the holes, and had to drill it again. Mistakes = Learning, or so I tell myself.

To create the sling, I attached two metal rings to the holes and tied some USB cables to them.

I may have to add some padding onto this knot, as it sits right on the shoulder and I can see it becoming uncomfortable:

All in all, I'm quite happy with it. It hangs very comfortably underneath the jacket, and is quite well concealed.

Just realised that this thread would be better suited in the 'Replica Costumes' section. No idea how to relocate it, though. Any tips?

This thread was doubled up by a mod, so if you see this message, just disregard it.

Just ask a mod.

One thing, though, before you get too far along - the transistor wasn't invented in the Fallout universe until the 2070s, whereas it was invented in 1947 in our universe. The rapid miniaturization of electronics, therefore, never occurred, but the citizenry instead focused on nuclear power. That's why cars and the like are powered by small, cold fission nuclear reactors, instead of our electrically-started engines today. That's also why the Great War happened - everyone was obsessed with nuclear power, nuclear weaponry, etc - so the war escalated to nuclear levels.

So what that means is that the USB cable wouldn't exist in the Fallout universe, nor would such a small circuit-board. It's not a problem, and I'm sure you'll get the idea across, it's just that you might be disappointed when the atmosphere is slightly different. ;)

That said, you have some pretty cool concepts here (oh, that poor USB cable...). I'm excited to see what you come up with, especially with the gun. Maybe wrap some duct-tape around it like the Hunting Rifle - make it seem like it's barely holding together.

Google for 1940s-1950s wires and cables... They mostly used braided ones .

You're both right, that's something that I never even thought about. Hmm. This may merit another trip to the junkyard!

I find that rusty metal, leather with less than perfect stitching, and pitted plastic work best for this type of thing. Just make everything look really old.

How would you recommend I pit pieces of plastic? I could probably make some hydrochloric acid which would do the job, but my workroom is pretty far from a chemical lab.

I'd do it the same way that it would've happened in the Wasteland. With pressure and trauma - just get a screwdriver or something. Melt parts of it with a lighter - just a corner or two - crack it somewhere, put some dings in it with a hammer and a chisel - just go to town. If it ends up looking horrible, it's not a huge loss. Plastic isn't exactly expensive.

Alright. Today I did some work on scrap armour, namely making a piece for the upper arm. I took the lid of an old biscuit tin (Arnotts, if you're wondering) and beat the ever-loving cr*p out of it. A few goings over with a pitchfork and a wrench later, and it looked like this:

Note that the Bicycle clip is a stand-in until I get some of those funky 50's style braided cables - props out to Contec for the tip!

I also made a holster for one of the pistols that I'm planning to paint (Eventually). I took some paper and made it into the rough shape, and then used Duck tape to reinforce it. I really like the look of how it turned out. To attach it to my leg (or waist, whatever) I can just use more ducktape.

The more nerdy of you (If that was possible... you're looking at a thread called "Fallout Wasteland outfit on the Replica Prop Forum) may notice that I used old WOD sheets for the paper. Any port in a storm, I suppose.
