Ewing build

Thanks for the generous comments guys. To be honest I'm very pleased with the whole bird. The kit from Frank and Moe was first rate anyway and I sketched add ons to the variety of ship options that were pictured in the instructions they provided until I liked something that I saw, then the mock ups worked. I have to say its gone unusally smoothly for a build, so it would just be my luck to screw up the paint job.
I have now finished the cannons and sprayed everything in Halfords grey primer now. The usually marks that were invisible have shown up, but I'll tidy them away later. Everything is still just loosely pushed together so I can paint things separately .
With the cannons I tried shorter ones but they just didn't seem to work for the scale of the ship . Because of the X wing heritage they had to be a certain size to look like they still had some power in them ,but still not too long. And they did not look correct right out on the wing tips ends like an X either. So ,given the atmo-interceptor theme of a super fast manoeuvrable fighter I've mounted them along the main wing. She does look like a bit of a mauler now with enough extreme fire power to blast most things out of the sky!!!
Painting scheme is leaning towards "Tatooine Desert Raider". In other words lots of strong reds , yellows ,blacks and dark tan rusts splashed over an older more formaliized paintwork as a rough camoflage but now allowing the original paint work to show through worn and sandblasted. Tricky but we'll see how it goes.
I may start this next week if the weather warms up. If not I'll finish work on the B wing so I can paint it at the same time. So don't be surprised if I don't post for a while.
Any way the last pics before painting. Like I said I really like the shape of the ship and its been a really joy to build her and stil be free enough to experiment with the look, without drifting to far off concept. I'd highly recommend the kit to anyone who may wish to have just the ordinary E wing or wants to try their own version of it.

Great answer CutThumb. I guess I feel 'studio scale' is increasingly an irrelevant term, due to changing technology. It also boxes-in some great modeling that just should be great modeling. I see so many builds here - in the 'studio scale' section that actually look a LOT better than the filming miniatures I've seen in person. We've come a long, long way since the late 70s!

Anyway, this is a great build, and I look forward to seeing what you'll do with her paint-wise.

Thanks for the + ive comments everyone. Seriously the credit goes to the basic kit and the plans that go with it. When you have not got to spend an age prepping and correcting casting flaws and warped pieces then your inclined to enjoy it and spend more time on other things, like design. I did the same with by modifiying the engine intakes on a flawlessly cast MS V3 Xwing and doing other extras on that bird.
Unfortunately that marked the end of my good kits run, as I had a couple of pieces that proved to be real problems one way or another after it and it put me off buying any kits at all. However,my faith has recently been restored. I may end up doing another E for a mate of mine ,once I do another build for him, but he's waiting to see what kind of paint job I produce.
Bad news it won't be anyday soon, as we've had a pile of snow and temperatures are way down . I'm guessing mid March now.

CutThumb,

I really miss reading this thread. Is there any hope I will see any painting updates on the modified E-wing in the near future?

Thanks,
Barry.

Unfortunately I've been away from home for a few weeks but got back Wednesday so everything has been put on the back burner. I also recieved the Concept X wing from Frank Cerney that was owed to me by REL. He did a top job with the casting and it looks like a perfect addition to the X wing family next to the E. So I will be building her first,as it looks like a pretty quick job ,as the clean up is minimal, the casting is sound as a pound and there doesn't need to be anything extra added to this bird to "customise" as far as I can see. Despite the problems I had getting it ,Richard did superb work in designing it and Frank has actually improved the build by the reinforcing the wings with brass tubing, adding a clear cockpit for lighting and casting the lazer parts so you can seperately build them with brass tubing as well.
So as it has still not quite warmed up here enoughto airbrush I will build the Concept X and then paint them both together. I'll probably also finish a B wing build that has taken about a year to do, despite all the great help I've had from TJ (Shadowknight) with extra parts. Its the most demmanding kit I ever had and I almost gave up on it. But some people have had terrrific results with it. So anytime in the next three weeks you'll see it finished.

I guess you are talking about the 1/24 Robert Burns kit? It took me over 1 1/2 years to finish it and I have to agree, most demanding garage kit ever for me as well. Not only the armature, but also replacing incorrect stuff. Looking forward to how it turned out.

Sometimes its just a good idea to wait a bit! After I got my concept X wing from Frank I looked again at the E wing and decided to add some extras to make it look like it came from the same shipyards. Plus the exposed top did not make alot of sense for an atmo interceptor- particularly if it operated on a desert world like Tatooine.
So I've added a detachable cover and some extra piping plus little bits here and there to add detail. I also added a heat grill to the back of it to help "ventilate ". And on the plus side you can still get to see all of the great detail when you want by lifting it off.
I'm fairly happy with it now, but you never know.
I've also added some photos of the concept X as I will be painting them together- very quick clean up and fit together over a weekend, still thinking about the cockpit though, its more visible than the E and may benefit from lighting, if I can be bothered to fiddle with it. With that in mind I've cut the rear engines/ droid panel out so I can fit in a battery pack. Its the only "mod" I can feel needs doing to it. It was easy to do thanks to the angled lines in the cast. So it drops in and out very neatly.
Scalewise the pair of them together look very neat and as a progression of the X wing lines ,they are a must have.

Well, I decided to have a go at lighting the cockpit. I wasn't too impressed with my first effort on the salzo X wing a way back. I think the main problem was I tried to get too many colours into it and all over the place. So I looked at some reference from proper aircraft and found it basically came down to two colours, white and red. So thats what I went for. Overall I'm far happier with the effect, particularly the backlighting. The clear cast resin panel is a fantastic help though, tones down the LEDs through the decals.
Anyway, thats the hull now sealed up and sanded and that means I'll be painting both the E and X this weekend. Weathers been really great, so I'm good to go finally!!

Spent a few hours just tinkering with both birds and getting the X primed. I've added a slight amount of detail around the engines intakes and a couple of bits here and there but apart from cleaning off some fingerprints and excess putty marks they are both ready to paint. I might spend a couple of days just sketching out colour schemes- I'd like to keep the X as close to the original Ralph artwork as possible with the exception of the wings- the outers and particularly the inners could do with bolder markings ,as unlike the film X ther is no exposed engine work. The E will be well weathered whatever I end up with ,but I'm favouring desert colours, thinking like a lighter sandcrawler, which has been my favorite paint job so far. I'd like to keep the orange ID stripping for both craft though,as a sort of replacement for the usual rebel red. Thanks for the comments on the lighting as well.

Progress on the E wing, I said she was going to be a rust bucket!
The masking is taking a longer than I thought , as to get the different layers of paint on is time consuming, between waiting for it to dry then reapplying more latex masks.
The ship id colour bars will go on last, along with burn marks, though the wings are fairly finished apart from dirtying them a tad with sand and the hull is getting there. I did the wings first to see if I could get the effects I wanted ie eroded paintwork thats been sandblasted constantly. It looks alright baring in mind there is still the dirt to go on. The hull has got most of the paintwork on it though I'm working towards the back still from the cockpit. In some areas the masks marks need softening by either handpainting or a touch of fine sand paper. Its fun to do all this but it eats up your time! The X should be really easy after this bird.

E wing is basically finished. I might change or add some detail to it and the cockpit is to finish but the bulk of the work is over. All that weathering was hard work.

CutThumb,

brilliant job. The weathering really transforms that E-wing from an inanimate and nameless ship into a character with a well defined background. The overall color scheme is great, too.
