Evil Dead 2 - Chainsaw "Build" (BODY PAINT DONE) ***PIC HEAVY***

A bit of background: My bro and I absolutely love the Raimi/Campbell Evil Dead series and the chainsaw in the films has been one of the few iconic film weapons that I've always wanted to own.

I recently had the opportunity to acquire one that JasonCash had made. :D I don't have the necessary tools to mod a chainsaw so I thank Jason for creating a great base structure! Haha I hope Jason forgives me for saying this, but the chainsaw arrived quite dirty - lots of mud/grime on the outside and tonnes of grease/old sawdust on the inside. I plan on giving the piece a thorough cleaning and new weathering; which means BLOOD! I've never done anything like this before, so again it's largely a case of trial and error. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Here are the pics of the saw as shipped and me disassembling it (the green numbers are for me to keep track of all the various parts). Hopefully, these might be a useful pictorial reference for your own build:

What the screws/parts look like:

Some of what I used to clean/paint:

I mainly used Sunlight dish soap and a normal toothbrush to clean the outside of the saw, which did the trick for most of the mud and existing paint. Greasy/grimy parts of the saw needed to be submerged in Mineral Spirits for a couple mins before cleaning with a toothbrush - I used an old, somewhat broken Sonicare brush for the more intricate parts. All the other components were used for the initial painting base. I watched Volpin's High Speed Prop Weathering for his M8 Avenger to learn how to weather. Thanks Volpin!

Several pieces I've already started to paint:

These are the engine/saw blade attachment parts, so I figure they would be bloodier than the rest of the saw. I'd like to keep the rest of the saw more minimal in terms of goriness.

And a bonus pic... gotta give the saw a hand! Right? ;)

No worries on modding it, I can't wait to see how this turns out. The mud that was on it was from the actual cabin from the original Evil Dead. :)

Thanks for your support Jason!!! :D

After seeing your photos, I guessed it was authentic Evil Dead mud! I hope you'll like how I'm modding it and do your prop justice.

Finished my first couple coats of paint on the outer shell and so far I'm enjoying experimenting with different paining techniques. The paint has mostly dried, but still waiting for the blood clear coat to cure; which, from what I've read, takes a minimum of 48 hours. :rolleyes

Re: Evil Dead 2 - Chainsaw "Build" (PAINTING PROGRESS) ***PIC HEAVY***

Small update:

I'm starting to put the saw back together and I wanted to change the grip a little. Searching through the forum, it seems that most of these props have the grip mounted in the same position that Jason mounted the grip on this one.

I find the space between the grip and the engine block is too tight for my hands and it's painful to have the saw on even for a couple minutes - for reference, I wear Medium sized gloves. Also, I think the grip would be more comfortable if it was located deeper within the saw cavity. As it stands, the grip is a tad too close to the opening which puts strain on the wrist. If the grip was mounted a little further back, the saw would be supported by my forearm decreasing wrist strain.

To try and fix this, I added several metal strips to hold the grip in a position that feels most comfortable to me. It works quite well and is super stable!

I think I've mostly finished painting the body of the saw. There are some touch-ups I still need to do, but I'm liking how it's turning out so far.

Though, I still have no idea how I want to paint the blade... I want it bloody, but not too bloody...

Please let me know if you have any suggestions/improvements I could make!

Nice bodywork there. It looks exceptionally gory! Looking forward to seeing the blade.

It's quite a stark contrast to the glass slipper in the background.

Brilliant stuff, I've just got my XL delivered a few days ago, only got the cleaning and disassembling done at the moment, I hope it comes out half as good as yours :)
