I can't find the old thread on this prop, but some good close up photos of this bust could help building it.

Anyone got this?

Re: ESB Mynock cave breathing aperatus

The breathing mouth piece looks more detailed on the bust than I remember it in the movie, where it just looked like a regular coal filter breathing mask shape vac-formed in clear plastic - or even just a clear plastic breathing mask.

Just an observation. Could be wrong.

Yes, someone figured out all the parts about 3 years ago.

i can't find my files that reference that, but I recall there was some issue with getting the Oxygen masks from medical supply.

Had no money at the time, but do now.

Hope someone posts info so we can build sets.

I tried to get the right breathing mask from a couple different medical supply companies but had no luck. I would order and nothing would ever ship. All I ever recieved was 100 feet of the wrong tubing.

They are made by an Australian company I believe. But I can't seem to find the name in my bookmarks or records. I had tracked down the US company that makes them. But I guess it's gone now.

The toughest part is the straps that hold the mask on are some sort of black rubber scuba mask strap with some connectors to the mask that I have no idea where they come from.

I made mine over 6 years ago I reckon. I can't for the life of me remember where the mask or tube came from. The strap was off a 70's scuba mask. The greeblies were just plastic and metal fittings of various (close but not correct) types. Mine was pretty lame, it was one of the first things I made.:$ I never got round to making or finding the 'air cylinder'.

This is the only pic I have...from a Han Solo ESB costume I put together and no longer own:

The mask looks like an Adult None-Rebreather common in the EMS field.
I will see if better pictures can be had.

I supplied a number of masks that were used a few years back. Never got around to completing the project myself though. I seem to have only one left. Could look in to getting more.

I have been wanting to make one of these myself. The canister I was going to custom make. I cannot find the tubing, not clear anyways.
The mask is the hard part.

I wanted to make these breathing masks for my Chewbacca costume and one for the Han Solo in our Nebraska Rebel Legion garrison (Central Garrison). There are very few good photos, or scenes, that show any details of these devices. There are some ok looks at the mask, but the tanks are virtually hidden in the shadows. From freezing the Mynock “cave” scene and looking at stills I could see what the mask and hose look like, and how the tanks attach to their clothing (not the specific mechanism, just the location).

What I could tell from the reference photos is that the mask is a clear, basic respiration mask with a hose adapter that is 3/4 inch in diameter. The hose is about 2ft long and is clear plastic with ribs. The strap in the movies is a black rubber and is attached to the mask via a buckle. If you look at the movie and pause it when Han turns his head you can see a bunch of hair sticking out in the middle of the strap which indicates that on the back of the head the strap separates into two sections like a scuba mask strap. The tank looks like it is a cylinder that is somewhere around the size of a coke bottle. It might have a screw top and somehow it has a clip that can be used to attach the tank to Han’s jacket and Chewy’s bandolier.

I searched ebay for respiration masks and found someone who was selling two masks that looked pretty close, almost identical actually, to the masks in Empire. They were selling two masks for $5 – what a deal! For the straps I just went to my local dive shop and got replacement straps in black ($11 each). The hose turned out to be a major problem. I first went to Home Depot and looked at the washing machine hoses, like my X-wing chestbox hose, but those were too big and were not clear plastic. Then I tried searching for CPAP (medical respiration) hoses and found what I was looking for. However, most CPAP suppliers require a prescription for the hoses, which seems weird. One of the supply shops I visited suggested looking at large truck stops because they sell CPAP parts without prescriptions. No luck though. Finally I found a supplier that would sell me the hoses ($20 for both). The tank also turned out to be difficult to find, actually impossible. It has been suggested that the tanks used in Empire were from WWII planes. I could not find an actual oxygen tank but one night it came to me…use extra storage tanks from an old super soaker squirt gun. I found several people selling these tanks (Super Soaker Larami 50 Tanks) and I got two for $25. I have some left over brown suedecloth from my wife’s Boushh costume that I used to make Chewy’s extra material for his mask. Here are the materials I purchased for the breathers:

I will have to make some modifications to the super soaker tank and paint it, but the plastic tank will be nice and light and not pull on either my Chewy or our Han Solo costumes or be heavy to wear. More updates to come as I make more progress.

I spray painted the bottle brown and added some weathering. I also made a stencil that says "oxygen" aurebesh, just for fun. I bought some 3/4 inch buckles and attached them to the mask using a pop rivet with a small strip of black leather as the anchor. I ran the ends of the rubber scuba mask strap through the opening on the buckles. On the side of the tank that faces Han Solo I made and attached a clip so our Han Solo can simply clip it to his costume. I made the clip out of 1/8 inch metal rod that I bent into a clip shape.

Here is the finished breather mask on our Central Garrison Han Solo (sorry he's in the EPIV costume and not the ESB costume).
