Elizabeth Swan Pirate Costume - Dead Man's Chest [Updated: Pics #13]

I've been thinking of what I want to do for a general purpose Pirate costume. When I saw POTC 2, I thought, I can do that outfit, and not only am I a pirate, I'm a "face character" too.

The basic parts of this that I can see are:

-> Hat (black felt?)
-> Typical white Pirate shirt
-> Reddish brown? Longcoat with no sleeves
-> Black/Dark Grey? pants
-> Brown leather bandolier / sword hanger
-> Black "pirate boots"
-> Sword
-> Leather hand wrap.

I got some DVD screenshots. I'll link them so to not clutter this too much:

Buttons/front of vest, Handguard of sword
Sword Handle
Sword hanger, length of vest
Back
Back again
Pants and boots
Size comparason 1
Vest
Size comparason 2

So what do you all think? Has anyone done this, or does anyone have interest in doing this one?

i donno if it is appropriate to post a link to another forum here
but if you pm me, i could share some details

I made this costume for the premiere of DMC last year. I only had a few references from the promo material that we had at the time, and was incredibly happy with the accuracy that I managed. Of course, once the movie came out, I realised my mistakes (most of which were made because I was in a hurry) and I'm going to redo the waistcoat and shirt, finish the trimmings on the jacket, make the sword scabbard bit and make myself a pair of pants. I also need to get me a hat.

I'm most proud of the jacket, and managed to get the perfect fabric on sale at the time :D If youc an get your hands on the figure (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pirates-Caribbean-Figure-Elizabeth-Pirate/dp/B000E6UW94) it's actually really helpful for reference.

I'm going to have mine all fixed up to wear to the premiere of the next movie, at which I'm going to wear my hair as she does when she's disguised, having it all bound up in leather. Last year I wore my hair out all curled, but I'd like to do something different.

If you'd like any help with this costume, please let me know, I'm quite happy to help with any info or questions you have. I've found the best source for pictures is the costumer's guide :D

I don't know if these are useful - mabe there from the wrong POTC costume? I took them a couple of months ago in London:

The pants and shirt are easy enough. I just can't figure out what color the pants are. Black? Dark brown? Grey? Also what kind of fabric they are.

The vest is only hard in finding the right fabric.

The sword belt seems like the complicated part.

Also finding a sword thats accurate enough. I'm into swords and such, but I don't know any of the random makes, so any help on that is appreaceated.

For me the shirt was the easiest part. However, I drafted the collar wrong (I wa smaking it in a hurry) so I'm going to go back and remake it. For mine, I just used a pair of bought pants (again, I was in a hurry with it - made the whole costume in 2 days, along with a full medieval dress and surcote) but I would definately like to make a more accurate pair.

The pants are most definately dark brown as are the boots. That's a picture of the actual costume from Costumers guide (http://www.costumersguide.com/potc2_pirate.shtml). Check out the other ones too, they're very helpful. I actually came across some more of the jacket fabric that I used, so I'm going to make up a second, more accurate jacket (only thing missing on mine is the back pleats), finish my first one and sell it.

I agree the vest fabric is really hard to find. The front is patterned, it's got some kind of geometric flower print on it (http://www.costumersguide.com/potc2/pirate8a.jpg). It also needs to be thing enough to have some flow to it. The back fabric is self striped (http://www.costumersguide.com/potc2/pirate22.jpg), and seems very thin. Also note that the front is longer than the back.

I have no idea on the sword belt. I'm thinking of checking out my local leather supplier, and seeing if I can get some leather to use to make it. PErhaps check out markets for swords. I'd love to make a prop replica though, one that I can use at cons etc.

Museum Replicas has a new Pirate's Captain Hanger sword that is a generic rip-off of the Capt. Jack sword. But the handle and pommel are similar to this one.

As far as the baldric (what the sword hanger is called) it's not very tough to make them. Basic leather work is all that is really required. The harder part is locating a suitable buckle. Most buckles found commercially are too small or incredibly plain looking. Try bridle buckles at equestrain supply places. Might have some luck there.

Or you could just pick up on of Toby's POTC 1 Sparrow baldrics and just call it a day.

Ah thanks for the terminology, I knew it had a name but couldn't remember it. I picked up a large thing belt cheaply, so I'm going to use the buckle from it. It's quite huge, so shouldn't be a problem. I just need to get the leather for it :D

Yeah thats the sword I was thinking of getting. There are some obvious differences in the handle, but I may be able to re-wrap it and make it a little better.

I agree, finding the buckle is going to be the hardest part (as will finding the right fabric for the vest). It dosn't look terribly hard to make, I've done some leather work before, sounds like a good project for me.

Last_Chael - those pictures rock. Definatly will help me out when looking for fabric.

thats a very nice looking sword, but it is quite pricey.
for 20-30$ more you could get the exact one from Master Replicas

No problems, always try to help :p

I have a few photos of my costume up from the DMC screening we went to. I'm afraid they're not the best photos, but it gives you a bit of an idea. I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out (considering it was made in a bout 2-3 days) but I'll definately have a more accurate one for the next premiere. At the time, I was using a Zorro sword (It was the only pirate-ish sword I could find at the time) which looked pretty cool.

Oh and the other day when I was at my local fabric store, I found the exact fabric that I used for my jacket ont he sale table again (and cheaper than when I bought it). So hopefully with this fabric, and the leftovers from my other jacket, I'll be able to put together a more accurate jacket (which I'll make a little better fitting, and add in the back pleats). I'll still fix up my current one, but I'm hoping to be able to sell it :D

Re: Elizabeth Swan Pirate Costume - Dead Man's Chest

Well a bump from the past...

I kinda sorta finished this for Comic-Con. Kinda sorta meaning down to the wire finishing, and there needs to be some stuff redone. I didn't even have the whole outfit on untill the day I wore it.

Anyways, here are a couple pics (the few taken when I was *not* holding a Nerf gun. If you went to the Mezzannine during Con, I think you know what I'm talking about)

Before you comment on the sword... In an effort to save money so I could auctally *buy* something at SDCC, I went with a $10 wood one, that I would paint up. But! Of course it didn't come in time. So I hunted the sword vendors, and finally on Friday I found one with a wood cutlass (even though its more of a scimatar) So that night, I threw some Rub N Buff on it. Hence why the sword is lame. Now I have 2 nicely painted wood swords (with 2 different blade styles), and no money for a real one. I will get one eventually though. Christmas present I hope?!

Things I need to change:
Balderic. Since I didn't have a sword on hand (and my lightsabers don't have handguards) we never really tested out how it would fit in the balderic. Of course, once that was tested, there needs to be some changes made to the forked section.
Compass. Lets just say, Bondo accident. You don't notice anything from the pictures. But I gotta do some work on that. But I think its better than the toy it was before....
Jacket. Need to make it. I have been looking for fabric, but nothing has come up. I need to find a good place for wool (because we wear wool sweaters so much in so cal)

Anyway.. still a work in progress, but everything is, ain't it?

Not too shabby! The forked part of the baldric is called a frog. That is where the scabbard for the sword goes in. Nice wood sword! Did you find that at Con? Wish I had gone....!

I ended up getting a plastic $10.00 CJS sword from a costume shop. I will probably paint it up to make it more realistic.

Some of my pirate Lizzies baldric that I made.

csharding - Nice! I think the main problem with mine is the weight of the leather... mine is really thin. I may just study yours a little more... ;)

Josh - lol, I'm never putting that much effort into getting a toy again. Ok maybe if its really cool...
