Dyed blue Magnoli fabric?

I've been talking with Risu who's been very helpful, but i was wondering whether anyone has successfully dyed anything made from the blue Magnoli Tennant cotton?

I'll be getting some blue trousers next month (on payday, of course...), but was wondering whether anyone has found the perfect dye blend for accurate colour (real colour, not screen colour).

Here's the link to the LiveJournal discussion (Risu's recommendations are near the bottom): dw_cosplay: Magnoli Blue Fabric vs. The Real Stuff

My question would be about the pinstripes - in theory, wouldn't they come out with a purple hue if overdyed with blue?

Don't think so, have you seen Steve Rick's (Pumpkiny) blog? He dyes the original fabric there - it makes the stripes come out a dark rust colour, like the proper fabric.

I've ordered some fiber reactive dye, and will be testing it on a small swatch over the next few days, so we'll see how it goes.

This might be the kind of thing you want a professional to look at, as you are dying a full suit rather than just fabric.

A lovely RPF member recommended a dye that doesn't require heat, which takes a lot of anxiety out of the process. My concerns are a)will the stitching take the dye, b)can i get an even coverage, and c)how will the pinstripes come out?

Stitching rarely ever takes dye.

That's because most stitching is spun polyester, rather than cotton.
Polyester does not take to conventional dyes that would be used to dye cotton.

True cotton thread is sometimes tripe the cost of polyester, so manufacturers use the cheaper (and often stronger) option.

I suppose you could ask the suit maker to use a darker colour blue thread, so it looks fine when the suit is dyed. It's not like you're dyeing the suit a drastically different colour - it's basically just a bit darker. Also, there are not many parts on the suit where you'd see the thread externally.

If you're going for the actual fabric color, it is pretty drastically different. The Tennant suit doesn't have much topstitch though.

See, this is what i'm wondering at the minute. After getting the brown pair i'll be looking at getting the blue trousers, but i'm trying to work out what the best way of getting them is. I can either:

- Get the fabric from Magnoli, dye it and then send it to Baron Boutique (bit of a fuss and would take a long time to receive the finished product)

- Get the fabric from Magnoli, dye it and send it back to them (possibly expensive)

- Buy the trousers from Magnoli and dye them when i receive them (i could speak to Magnoli beforehand to try and use a thread of a similar colour to the finished dyed colour)

The last option seems the best, as i know Magnoli is very accommodating would probably be able to help with this. Of course, this is only a pair of trousers so wouldn't be as complicated to dye as a full suit.

Just found out from Magnoli that my trousers should be finished and shipped in the last week of May! I've heard so much goodness about the brown reweave fabric, and now i'm actually getting a pair of Tennant trousers! I really can't wait! I really want them even just so i can buy the blue ones!

So...any opinions on this? I'm trying to work whether to get the fabric now, dye it and send it back for Magnoli (or BB), or to buy the trousers first then dye them when i get them.

I've seen plenty of people dyeing the fabric to the right colour, so i have a good idea of what colours to use, but don't definitively know whether i can dye the trousers after they've been made?

The only person with a blue suit on here is Dave Ward, but i don't know whether he's attempted to dye that yet.

Yeah, i suppose. Was hoping i'd be able to dye the finished pants, but i think sending the dyed fabric to BB might be the better option. Besides, Magnoli's been a bit busy recently so it probably wouldn't take much more time than it's taken to receive my brown pants (shipping in the last week of May, hopefully).

Right, firstly my brown trousers arrived from Magnoli - OH MY GOD! They are amazing! Pictures of them don't do them justice! I love the colour, the feel, and they fit perfectly! Fitted around the top half, the exact right length and nicely slim down the legs! I even love the way they crumple and crease and look better the longer you wear them. Honestly, i can't tell you how pleased i am with them!

Anyway, i've also ordered some fabric for some more trousers, but 'cos i have to order at least 3 yards (and each pair uses about 1.5 yards) i ordered half brown and half blue ('cos id probably be wearing the brown ones more, and want two pairs so i don't wear them out!).

So, i've sent some emails off to Steve Ricks aka Pumpkiny asking (hoping) for help. I know he says on the blog that he won't be giving out his dye blend for some reason, but i've asked him anyway because i really want my blue trousers to be accurately dyed.

Also, i'm hoping that someone on here has done the same successfully. Risu and Dave Ward have both dyed blue fabric, but Risu's come the closest with a correct dye blend. He has a revised mix he thinks would produce the perfect colour, but i'm that anal that i'd need a definitive, tried-and-tested dye mix. I wouldn't even know where to start deciding on what colours to use, so i could really use some experienced input.

Finally, Pumpkiny talks about the blue suit trousers being interfaced. I know this isn't the same as lining the trousers, but was wondering what difference it makes to the trousers. Magnoli's aren't lined OR interfaced, and i think BB's are lined. What's the difference? I'm guessing that the blue shirting fabric was thinner than the brown GAP stuff, so it needed some support. But if Magnoli has made both materials from scratch then i'm guessing that they both have the same weight, and can both be treated the same way. If i like the feel of the Magnoli trousers now then am i better asking BB to leave them unlined?

And finally finally, does anyone know the washing instructions for Magnoli's brown fabric? Im guessing they go on a 40/30 degree wash and can be ironed under a cotton temperature, but want to make sure so i don't ruin them.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Mag's blue is close to the same weight as the brown, so it doesn't have to be interfaced. As for washng the brown, I'd just get them dry cleaned if you were planning on getting a jacket down the road. The original Gap pants faded pretty heavily when washed, I don't know if his fabric would do the same.

Yeah, thanks Risu, sounds like good advice. Just wondering whether or not to ask for them to be lined, 'cos BB says that it affects the durability. Not sure, and will have to wait to see if Steve Ricks has any input on a definitive dye blend...

I actually like the lining in my Baron pants. I wasn't sure at first, but it doesn't affect the drape or anything.
