Drilling Obi ANH Handwheel for D-ring Tutorial

I'm pretty certain the hole I drilled in mine was 1/8 inch, and I just did it freehand with a hand held drill, but I've found out since then that the taps can be very brittle and that wasn't a great idea, but seemed to be fine! I took my WannaWanga D ring to an antique store that had old military stuff and found a harness or something that had a d ring the right size

Ya I guess I see your point to a degree. But I’m not putting a couple cents or even a 2 dollar box store d ring on a 15k lightsaber that’s all original vintage parts. It just isn’t congruent. That’s just me I guess, thanks!

mikesprops before you start drilling make certain which pommel cube configuration you prefer ... Tunisia vs Chronicles/Mechanismo ... Romans Empire has made a video tutorial how to open up an AS handwheel in case you want to alter the position of the cubes. I'll see if I can bump this thread too for you

Thanks Chaïm, I've watched his video and my issue is I need a wooden dowell to the exact diameter of the handwheel and I don't have the tools to make one, need to find someone who can sell me one. Disassembling the handwheels would be really useful.

Don't laugh but I found a household tool, in need of replacing anyway, that has a wooden handle which almost fits nicely inside the handwheel ... just some sanding will give me the wooden dowell with correct diameter ... here's said tool :

Haha. (Sorry I had to laugh) that's perfect. I'm sure I could find myself such a professional tool for my work. If I buy two It could end up being the beginning of a Dalek

Ha, ha just bring along one of those handwheels to test-fit before purchasing ... or a calipers to measure the exact diameter.

I won't lie, I have always used my fingers with pressure inside and my hand on the endcap outside to unscrew them. This whole dowel thing... im late to the party

The dowel works so well. I’ve unstuck a fair few that way. I have one I keep even though I don’t plan on ever buying any more handwheels…
