Re: Captain America TWS/TFA Helmet 3D Print **Taking deposits for 2nd run**

I don't use spray paint for urethane rubber so I'm not sure what else would work. I just use what I have. If I knew a spray paint that would work if tell you.
Maybe someonelse on here uses spray paint..they could suggest something...

No worries! I appreciate the fast response. Am I too late to get in line for the 2nd run? I think I'll have you do the whole thing painted AoU style. If that's ok?

Re: Captain America TWS/TFA Helmet 3D Print **Taking deposits for 2nd run**

I used Montana Gold spray paint as a base on this helmet (WS) and it worked great, no cracks. Only issue for me is that it is more glossy looking than I want it, so I am still looking for a matte coating that I can put on it to dull it down.

Re: Captain America TWS/TFA Helmet 3D Print **Taking deposits for 2nd run**

I was searching the thread for this answer but I didn't see it.
I understand you use an acrylic ink with an airbrush... is that correct?
I was trying to use a spray paint to paint mine, but I'm afraid I'm going to ruin it... any suggestions?
I don't own an air brush, nor have I ever used one. Are there any spray paints that are the right colors and won't just flake off?
Thanks for the help.

I just thought I'd chime in and add my $.02. So, to date I have painted a total of 5 urethane rubber cowls/helmets, 2 being from Biggeek1972 and soon to be 3. I've tried a LOT of techniques, asked a ton of questions and read up on the subject anywhere I could. Mostly because my initial attempts at painting my Cap TFA helm were an utter disaster. So these are the products I use...
!)After cleaning the crap out of the item with warm water and dish soap, I wait until it's dry and then I hit it with a couple of coats of Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter (or acetone works just as well).
2)Then I prime with a can XIM Primer/sealer/bonder (it's a very gritty white spray paint, you can get it at Sherman Williams). I do a light, misting coat. Just enough to cover the whole thing but not enough to make it start to look white. This stuff is a superb primer, sticks to just about anything.
3)After that dries I brush off the helm with a clean shoe shine brush to get all the loose grit and particles off. Then I use Angelus acrylic paints through an air brush. They are sold as leather paints so they are very flexible and pretty durable. I thin them down with some matte acrylic finisher, water, and a little of the Angelus "Duller" to give it a very flat look. I get the paints and duller here...Specialty Art & Craft Supplies
4)I then finish with a watered down Acrylic finisher/sealer. If you want a dirtied/weathered look you can add a few drops of flat black paint to make it a light black wash.
You can get a cheap Badger bare-bones airbrush at Michael's for like $25 (and every week they have a 40 or 50% off coupon). And then all you need is a can of propellant which is like $15.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Re: Captain America TWS/TFA Helmet 3D Print **Last Run for WS****

Got it :) thanks. As soon as I get everyone's payments I can start the leather work.. there seems to be a lot of people who don't want them.. should have held off ordering leather until I got payments... live and learn

I have collected all the WS deposits..thanks guys. This will most likely be the last run for both the helmets.

Thats a shame, I was hoping in the not too distant future to get onto a run for a WS one... just no free funds right now :( oh well great work at any rate!

Re: Captain America TWS/TFA Helmet 3D Print **Taking payment on TFA****

Sorry I cant pay for leathers out of my pocket and have them sitting around.. these helmets need to be done in runs.. which may happen in the future, but for now I'll be shutting them down after this run..
