Don Post C-3PO Statue - Looking to install Zorg head

Call me crazy, but I have decided to replace the head of my Don Post C3PO statue with a Zorg version. I've always been a bit unsatisfied with the Don Post head as some of the details are too soft, such as the 2nd "/\" of the nose. I'm also a real stickler for the head and eyes of a figure, as I feel that's the money shot!

I found the place that originally gold-plated the Don Post statues, and even talked to the same guy that did it for Don. I was surprised to learn that Don Post used real 24K gold! So, I sent in the Zorg head to be gold-plated to match the finish of the statue. The newly plated head arrived yesterday! Here are some photos of it next to the current Don Post head I'm looking to replace. It's hard to tell from the pictures, however, the definition variances are more apparent in person.

Now I'm looking for all the proper accessories (accurate eyes and neck bolts) - brass preferred! I was able to find a brass antenna from a seller in South America and waiting for it to arrive, but I'll definitely be needing the rest!

Also, anyone have ideas on how I should handle the neck? Any help would be much appreciated!

How are u planning on removing the head?

Don't these things still go for a lot of money?

There have been some very affordable non wearable kits popping up... Why not just build a better one from scratch and sell the don post to a collector that isn't as worried about accuracy?

You might end up MAKING money. And you will de-value The don post if you break something removing the head.

The only way I would see this as being a good idea is if you got Your current statue very VERY cheap...

IMHO.

Thanks "Too Much Garlic" and "WarPig" for the advice. I originally got the head from Zorg, but not sure he has any eyes. I sent him a PM to check.

Using a drain pipe for the neck sounds like a great idea! I'm thinking silver chrome foil instead of gold for the neck though. I'd like to model him after the ANH version... I don't recall when his neck was gold in the other movies :unsure I haven't done too much homework on the neck.

"OldKen" - The Don Post statues vary greatly in price depending on who you ask. The range could be anywhere from $4K to 20K??? I bought mine in 1999 for approx $7500, which is just before Don Post realized how much it cost to make them, and the price shot up to $15K. If you look closely at my photos, you'll see some blimishes that have also formed on the head, so I can't claim that mine is still mint. That was also a contributing factor in the replacement of the head. Once I remove the old head, I may try to have it touched up to look new again.

Aside from the sharpness of the head casting, I don't really mind the rest of him. I guess I've grown a bit sentimental about him over the years. The existing head lifts off easily and is not permanently attached. The only hard connection is the wiring for his eyes, which has electrical that runs down his leg and you plug the AC into a plug on the back of his foot. My plan is to carefully dismantle the connection, so I could put the old head back at a later time, if I so desired.

You can get steel and aluminum bare metal foil as well. Those parts do seem like they would be base metal and not chromed or gilded. Also, the bearings at the arms should be steel or aluminum colored as well, as far as I've been able to tell, though should be easy to do.

You could always bang up and weather the DP head as a blasted protocol droid severed head type of thing.

I think the neck was gold only in Episode III. For that, they found some shiny gold cardstock (mylar coated, I think) and just wrapped it around, letting it overlap in the back. Probably turned it around when the character had his back to the camera. I don't know if the the OT approach was similar.

Well, the RotJ head that Anthony Daniels has, seems to have a thin brass wrap, as a neck.

Do nothing of the sort! Give it to me instead. :)
Well, it was only if he didn't want to let it go. Depending on the price, I might be interested too... but that would basically be to do exactly what I mentioned - bang it up - as I cannot afford a kit and have it gold-plated too.

If that's brass, then the neck in ROTJ was gold and not silver?

Where could one get steel or aluminum bare metal foil? Is that something Lowes or Home Depot might carry, or would I need to order it up special? Same question for drain pipe?

That's the wrap-around card I described. He probably snagged one after an in-character appearance in recent years to use as a stand for the head.

I just order online. I believe I got mine from Red Frog Hobbies

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely order from them.

Along the lines of replacing the head on my 3PO... I did the same with my Don Post Stormtrooper statue when MR/eFX released their fiberglass helmets. The finish matched up with the Don Post statue perfectly. I'm much happier with it now. The older helmet has very soft detail and lacked the ANH asymmetry.

That's a great idea, but it looks like the helmet is sitting a tad too high on the trooper body?

It might be the angle. Here's another photo from the same set. Next to that is an older picture of the same where I thought the helmet was sitting too low. It's easy to adjust... I just add/subtract an extra layer of bubble wrap inside the helmet :D

Yea, I think the lower one's got it. You don't want to see the edge of the neckline on the armor. That helmet sure brings new life to that statue!

I finally got my hands on some brass eyes that would fit. Here are some progress pictures. The head is just sitting on top of the body. I have not yet attached the neck bots or antenna either. If you look close, the original Don Post head is layng on some boxes behind the figure with a cloth over it. That's because I haven't disconnected the wiring yet :)
