Dollar Store Iron Man Arc Reactor Contest

I agree. If you couldn't get this together in 2 months what is 5 days going to do for you?

The extension wouldn't be for you guys, it would be for me to get everything organized in such short notice. :)

I guess this is a decision for the Mods if they can/will hand it over to someone else?? If you get the go ahead to do this in the next 24 to 48 hours, Orange_Blend, do you have a place ready where we can upload our submissions starting as soon as you got permission and still hold by the 25th deadline, then you take ever how many days to sort and shuffle and get them ready for voting?

I have a g-mail account that has enough space to receive all the entries should I be permitted to finish the contest. I won't post it until we've heard from either Darth or a MOD that it's okay.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate on this.
Hopefully things will get decided and get rolling sometime Wednesday.

I'm flying out to SD in about 6hrs for the Comic Con. I need somewhere to submit my pics in the next few hrs, otherwise I will not be returning until the 28th. I'll have very limited internet access while out there, but I'll do my best. I'd hate to miss out on entering this contest after all the time and effort I put into building my arc.

I am ashamed to say I must bow out at the eleventh hour. :cryI thought I could find the time to do this, but Comic-con came in like a charging rhino and chased away any free time I had. Maybe next time. Good luck to all and I can't wait to see the entries when I get back from Con.:)

its all the sort of stuff you'd expect to see in a pound/dollar shop. They're both basically made up of a coffee filter, copper wire, card, candle wax and a spotlight.

I think everyone here will agree that what you'd expect to be able to find in a pound/dollar shop is very different from what's actually there. My experience has been that I've needed to do a lot of lateral thinking and staring at obscure items on the shelves in order to find parts close to what I needed.

These are just my own thoughts and it would be good to hear what others think on this subject.

My thoughts are that this is something people should have thought about over a month ago and NOT procrastinated. Sorry!

I agree, but if I had actually been able to build mine.... Dollar Stores be damned.... I would still be looking for better parts and trying to rule out any imperfections, even after I finished submitting pictures.

Absolutely. The deadline needs to stay as it is. We've all known the due-date for two months. Part of the challenge is completing it on time. Of course it would be more comfortable to have another week and all of us would love some extra days to perfect our entries. I expect a couple of late nights this week, but consider that part of the fun!

Again, any extension wouldn't have anything to do with having more time to finish your reactors. We're still waiting to see if Darth returns and if he doesn't it'll be the deadline before anyone gets the email address to send their entries in to. A short extension would be required to give everyone a fair chance to send their entry to the new address and to get the word out about the change.

If I hear from Darth or a MOD with blessing to take care of the voting in the next day or so then I'll post a new address to send and the deadline will remain the same. I do want to give Darth every opportunity to return though so if I don't hear that it's okay to do it until the 24th or the 25th then a short extension will be needed to get the word out, especially with Comic-con dragging a lot of people away from home.

We are looking into having someone else handle this contest since we have not heard back from DarthCalibar. We are, of course, concerned about him, and hope that everything is alright.

So do we. If you need someone I'll do it but if you have someone else no problem.

Thank you for your offer to help, it's certainly appreciated!

We have already contacted jason1976 (who ran the dollar store saber contest), and he has agreed to step in and help keep this contest on track. :thumbsup

jason1976 will be posting the new submission information shortly. We will add that info to the first post in this thread.

Although I am sure that all of you are doing this purely for the fun of creating something :)D), it has been brought up that DarthCalibar was offering a raw cast of his Iron Man helmet as one of the prizes. At this point we don't know if that prize will still be part of the contest. If anyone else would like to donate any replacement prizes we would really appreciate it.

I'm happy to help out, and try to keep things on course, but in the end this is Darth's contest, and I will do my best to honor his rules, and plans for the contest. I hope that he is ok, and if he should show back up, I would be happy to hand the rains back over to him.

I will contact those that donated prizes, and make sure that they are still willing to do so, with me in charge, but since I don't have a iron man helmet, or anything like it, to offer, and since that was Darth's own donation to the contest, we may not have it as a prize. However, I will be excepting offers for other donations (for the contest), from anyone who wish to offer anything.

Feel free to ask any questions you like. I'm going to take a little time to read over this thread, and ketch myself up, and I'll get back to everyone a.s.a.p.

Um, I'm on dial up. (yeah, I know I'm the last guy in America on dial up. :lol) So, as a favor to me, would everyone place keep that in mind when sending in your pics.

I mean, make sure they're clear, and sharp, and plenty big enough, but just know that if you send me huge files, it will take ma a year and a half to download them. :lol

This wasn't a problem for the saber contest, so I'm sure we will be fine here.

eeeh......dialup......
How big is too big? a meg? How many pics should we send? I have
at least two, lighted and unlighted.
Would it be better to send two or three small pictures of our entry,
or make it into a collage and just send one big picture? Do we send
now also the raw materials/receipts pictures? Would it be better for
you download wise if we sent entry pics in a email separate of materials
proof pics?

I'm on the same dial up I was on for the saber contest, and it all worked out find for that. Each person sent in some build picks, pics of their receipts, and a few of there finished item. No problem. So send as much as you like. I will look at the average number of pics entered by each person and decide who many to post for each in the voting thread, when the time comes. (i.e. If one person sends 10, but most folks only send 1 of there finished item, then one will be posted for each. If 3 is the average, then 3 will get posted for each. etc. etc. etc.)

My comment on dial up was just to recommend, that folks don't send me 20 different, 300 DPI pics. I can't post them that size anyways. Since they will probably be posted to the net at about 72 dpi, it would make more sence to send them that way. However, if you don't know wow to check that, or set that, then don't worry about it. I can fix it on this end.

It's not a big deal at all, I just though I would put it out there.

If your worried about it, for the lightsaber contest some folks uploaded there pics to this site, or photobucket accounts, and then PMed them to me, in privet.

Oh, and I haven't got through this whole thread yet, so if I'm going against Darths plans, please let me know, as I really do want to stick to the plan as much as possible. (please don't take that as an invitation to mess with me, with statements like "Darth said, I get to enter 12 times" Or "Darth told me I get first place" :lol)

And I am sticking with the deadlines set forth by Darth, so feel free to send them in any time, between now, and the end of the entry period. (if you've already submitted something to Darth, I would ask that you send it to me as well, as we can't get a hold of Darth, and I don't want anyone to miss out.)

Thank you for taking on this responsibility, Jason1976 (no offense to yourself, but we all hope Darth will be able to overcome is personal matters and come back on board in time).

I appreciate the need to restrict the number of images that will be shown for voting, but if you need to omit any of an entrant's photos, it would be good if you could allow them editorial control over which are used. I'm sure everyone will have strong ideas as to which pictures show the best aspects of their creation.

Shylaah's collage suggestion is excellent. Perhaps it would be possible to give maximum dimensions for a collage and allow entrants to assemble their imagery within those constraints. Maybe allow a collage and two or three 'hero' shots for detail?

I wonder if it is necessary to show the receipts and materials/build photos in the voting thread? It seems to me that they will make what will already be a long thread with so many entrants even longer. Of course Jason or Darth will need to see the receipts in order to confirm that the entry complies with the rules, and a separate build-up thread would be extremely interesting.
