Does anyone have the Vader reference CD?

See that's the deal for me, we were honor bound by the request of the compiller. I myself think info should be freely distributed, but I also have to stand by my word as originally given.

I think there are enough people here interested in getting a new one done that it might actually become a reality. As I said before, I've got well over 1500 Vader photos that I would gladly contribute and I'm sure there are others around here with a lot more than that.

well if it's a free-for-all and there are no restrictions ie: people can fill up their websites with the CD material, make money using the CD material, or not even considering LFL copyright regulations for hyperspace photos which is something this forum adheres to.....count me out....I have over 20GB of stuff so one CD won't make a big difference to me....

I don't think anyone would have a problem with restrictions as far as people not using stuff on their websites or using the material to make a profit. I think the thing people are looking for is something that can be distributed freely to all of those who want it(which is something that seems to be a sticking point with the current Vader Reference disc). Hopefully enough people will get on board and make this thing happen as it would certainly be a welcome project IMHO. :thumbsup

I agree that the new CD as offered through this forum should be available for everyone in the forum.....and yes the previous version was limited in that it was a private (not forum-wide) distribution....



EDIT: So here's what needs to be considered:

1. Who will produce it? I might consider it...but would need help with distribution. Clearly if someone else has a large collection of images and they would be willing to do it that's fine with me...

2. Group agreement on use of the CD ie: personal reference only, or for posting for RPF discussions, etc. Not for website or advertisement use (in order to respect copyright). No recopying for resale of the CD. Copies sold at cost plus small extra amount for time to create it. I think the old CDs were, what, $10 or $15 apiece? Maybe more if it's a DVD . There's a heck of a lot out there in terms of fan-made Vaders.

3. Here are the categories of the old CD:

These are not bad, but we could certainly refine this list....

4. Would the previous maker of the CD like to be involved? After all, he put together all the material for the first one. Some of that material was scanned I think from old magazines (many screen caps as well), and so the scanning thing should be taken into account.

Ok I've found someone willing to help me out with the logistics of the CD....so what I'll do is create a template of sorts outlining what will be on it....and then people can start making submissions if they like....I have stuff from the web going back to 1999....so we'll see what can be fit on a 650-700MB CD :confused ....as far as menu-driven stuff I'll leave that open for now. The RPF image CD had a menu-driven browser which actually I find cumbersome. It's much easier for me at least to just refer to the individual folders on a disc and open all the images together in a picture or photo viewer. That's my own preference at least....

I was even thinking of a 3 CD set, ANH Vader, ESB Vader, ROTJ/ROTS Vader.....in case it cannot all fit on one CD....but we'll see. It will focus initially more on quality than sheer quantity...

Keep in mind this is a nonprofit endeavor purely to archive in one location many private and reference photos that have popped up over the years. My total Vader/Star Wars archive itself is over 40GB (26GB alone for ANH Vader) so I already have a lot of stuff organized.

Clearly some of the material I'll want to post here for permissions as a lot of it will be private photos...although clearly one cannot find every person who has posted a photo of their Darth Vader suit or helmet so changes can be made as well if any objections turn up...especially for RPF members.

I will at some point start a new thread on this.....

Probably most members do not have that capability, but maybe it should be put out there for discussion just to find out for sure.

A DVD is certainly doable since the technology is very common nowadays. Most new computers have DVD readers and/or burners. I would be especially interested in the ROTS Vader references. I have some myself but there should be more out there I believe.

I was just getting ready to say that a DVD can fit 4.7 GB of information which is a huge step over 650-700 MB CDs, but looks like someone already beat me to it. So, it definitely sounds like DVD is the way to go for this project. The next question is how many people are going to contribute to the disc and how will all of the photos be organized?

Great idea for a new Vader CD/DVD count me in for a copy if this goes ahead. This should blow the cobwebs off the old one and also lose some of the bad feeling of the haves and have nots when it comes to the old one as well.

This should be a great addition to the RPF Vader fans :thumbsup

What would be the main focus of the DVD, actual pics of the Vader costume from all 4 films, fan-made suits/displays or a combination of the two? Just wondering if you have an idea of the disc's layout and how you would put it together.

I am willing to help with the disc(s) as well, although I do agree a DVD is the best way to go.

For the record, this is not quite true... the first disc was open to everyone interested on the RPF. Flix 4 U was the official author and he had an ongoing thread during the entire project. Contributors got a free copy and the other interested parties paid a nominal fee of like $5 or $10.

All that being said, a new disc would be great. One of the things that bothered me about the first one was all the double-images, and images that were worse in some cases. I know those guys did the best they could do at the time, but a closer eye on editing would be welcomed

Since the ball seems to be rolling on this, approximately how many people would need to contribute to the project to make it a reality? Obviously SithLord has quite a wealth of material if he has 26GB worth of stuff so besides him, who else has a large collection of images that they're willing to contribute?

Well what I'm going to do first is solidify a category list and then I'll source out everything I'd like to contribute to the list. Then I'll make a request for images based on the categories so it's easier for me to incorporate the submitted material. Hey I'm sure your 1500 images, Brent, are terrific....anything is helpful. Submissions can be provided as zip files, PDFs, TIFFs, jpegs, or even CDs. A lot of my images are comparisons, actually....originally photoshop files but they would be made into TIFFs. Maybe even a jacket for the DVD outlining the submissions/contributors? I like the idea, Ghosthost, of those who contribute images get a free copy....although it wouldn't be cost effective if everyone gave one jpeg and I had to make 50 DVDs LOL....so I might have to set a minimum limit...but then of course I'll probably get many duplicates....hmmm.....tough one....

Kind of exciting actually.....and yes there would be opportunity to edit the submissions...ie: if there are duplicates then the highest quality one would be chosen. I have image enhancement software so I could even include a section in which some of the nicer ones submitted are made even larger/sharper. I like to do that with some screen caps. I know there are a couple of guys here that somehow or other can get better screencaps than I can (not too difficult a feat since mine were never that good perhaps because of my cheap CRT screen?).

I'll see if I can get the categories sorted out over the weekend...of course anyone here can suggest categories...I'm also content leaving this thread as the foundation thread for it...

There's the question of what format should the images be in? TIFF files are quite large. Low compression Jpegs are more managable. There is TIF, TIFF, JPEG, JPG....which I think are PC vs Mac. Mac computers can open anything I think...are PC's limited?

Pretty much all of my images are in JPEG format and that would probably be the best format to use so you could fit as many pictures as possible on the DVD. Then again, it's also important to get the highest quality possible so you may want to use another format. I'm sure you know a lot more about this stuff than I do and as the one taking the helm on this project obviously you're the one who should make the decision. I do agree that it's not fair to you if one person sends you 2-3 images and then expects a free DVD so some kind of minimum requirements would need to be established. I never thought my request for the original Vader reference disc would lead to the formation of an entirely new project........kinda cool actually. B)

PC's can open all those types.

I think that we should go with JPG. It's the most space efficient and most people are familiar with the format. Also, if the images are high res JPEG will be just as good as other formats.

Go with PNG's. Best quality, with great compression.
