Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

ok count me in the group of people who will want some of this !! Everything looks great hope it turns out as well as you want.

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Glad to see more interest stirring up!

What I might do it order a bunch and sell them directly to people. This will save everyone money on shipping and time between ordering and receiving. They'll also be available for purchase on Shapeways but seeing as you're looking at a 2 week build time before they ship them, it would be a lot faster if I had a bunch made at once to send out.

It would also afford me the opportunity to do minor customization, if wanted. For example, the River Song sonic needs a small length of 1/8 acrylic rod to complete the look. Unless you happen to have this lying around, you'd have to order 3-6 feet of the stuff just to get the 42mm length you need, which would probably cost over 10 bucks after shipping. If I get the full length myself and cut them down to size, they'll add a minimal amount to the price of each.

And just a heads up, I'm working on the model for the Laser Screwdriver right now :)

Looks great. I'm
Not sure what dimensions you're working off of, but just FYI, the laser prop is larger than the CO toy. So if you're working off of the toy as a starting point, you'll have to increase the scale of your model.

Thanks for looking out, Anakin. In my research I saw the thread with karstva's build mention it being about 5% larger. I am working from the CO toy as a general reference for proportions but planning scale it up to the proper size before uploading the model.

Just as a point of interest. I'm also modelling the texture of the grip into the piece. It's proving to be quite the pain in the rear...

Laser Screwdriver is done! The current scale on this matches the CO toy but can be adjusted to be more accurate to the screen prop.

Long-time reader, first time poster....

Could I go ahead and just reserve two of the Eccleston/Tennant sonics? I have some displays I want to put together, and something this accurate would be PERFECT...

Two of each for a total of 4, or one of each for a total of two?

Very much looking forward to seeing what you receive from Shapeways. :thumbsup

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

I may be interested as well. Being "new" to the WHO bandwagon, I missed the boat on a lot of prop runs etc. The models look great.

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

Will be waiting for the "They're available!" thread...

My apologies; I have a bad habit of lumping everything in the Davies era together. Two TENNANT-era sonics will suit my needs just fine!

No worries, just wanted to make sure! There was a bit of confusion cause I haven't uploaded the Tennant sonic model yet. I was waiting on the 3d print of the Eccleston before uploading it.

Actually, the more I think about it, since they'll only be 16 bucks a pop from what you quoted before, just go ahead and add a single Eccleston model to the order as well, for a total of three. Will you be incorporating the "blue marble" idea for the emitter?

I haven't quite decided yet. I'm a sucker for consistency, so having a "proper" emitter for the 9th/10th sonic but not one for the 11th sonic would bug me If I could figure out an easy, cheap way to provide emitters for all variants, that would be best.

However, one option for the 9th/10th would be to replace the emitter head (or include an extra one) with the lens left out of the model and subtract a rounded inset from the inside of the emitter head.

This would give people the option to insert a 14mm clear blue marble which would fit perfectly into the inset and require a small amount of glue around the edge to stay in. 14mm is a relatively standard size, they sell them here, or I'm sure one could be found as part of a board game.

Good point...and while the 9th/10th sonic has an emitter design that makes the marble idea such a simple and elegant solution, the opposite is true of the 11th...not only is it an odd shape, but it kind of has that marbled look to it that I've driven myself nuts trying to duplicate on my CO version. In any case, thanks so much for doing what you're doing here...even if it's just a static display, having an affordable screen-accurate sonic is going to be wonderful!!

Re: Affordable Doctor Who Stunt Props (Sonic Screwdrivers, TARDIS Keys, etc.)

You might try some glass cabochons. That's what I use in my builds

Those would work great for the 9th/10th emitter lens, and there's quite the varied selection. What do you find would be the advantages of cabochons over marbles? Do they come in various depths or are they just half-spheres?

Also, uploaded The Master's Ring. I'm a bit concerned about the detail showing up, however...

I'm not sure on the shape of the ring itself but I used a screenshot from the show for the design, with the help of this line drawing for shape and position reference, but there were some apparent discrepancies I altered for my variation. Anyone have better pictures of the ring from the sides?
