Hey everyone, it's the new guy... So as an avid custom costume designer and collector I thought it only right to seek opinions here, since I have been reading yours for so long. One of the costumes I'm currently working on is a Wikus Van Der Mere from District 9, early stages of infection. The clothing part of this is brainless- but the arm... ahhh the arm... Take a look at the custom silicone gauntlet style full arm glove I have and tell me what you think. They're kinda expensive to make- but I think it might just be the best one out there yet... Comments??

haha! Modest... But yes it is very nice.. very nice indeed. Keep us updated.

have you done the shoulder and chest section to?

BTW check out MR Bungles one, his is very nice as well.

Cheers, Dave.

Far too modest, this is by the far the best custom Wikus/Prawn hand that I have seen anywhere. Great work! When I can I buy one?:lol

I know, I know... far too modest- but I really do think it is bad***. Heh. There I go again. The reason why it really stands out to me is because I press them in silicone- making them far better than latex. Silicone is the closest thing to human skin so you sweat less, it's more natural, better dexterity etc.

I have no current plans to do the shoulder prosthetic yet- but who knows. It is my sculpt persay. I had an expert do it under my direction. His skills dwarf mine and I wanted this to be as good as it can get. Here's a pic of the sculpt. I just loved that movie and that arm is like a one-item costume. Throw on some brown pants, black shoes and an old white dress shirt; add some blood and you ARE Wikus.

I also make the MNU Wikus ID's - movie quality. I'll post one next batch.

...and yes, the gloves are posted on eBay... :love they will be there through halloween at least. PM me for additional details if you'd like.

Deckard, the detailing of your hand is awesome, but if you are willing to take a bit of constructive criticism, the fingers look a bit short and fat compared to the original. We have some photos in this thread of the original hand:

And I also did a quick comp for you showing the difference. Granted, the angles aren't perfect, but you get the idea. Still, a beautiful piece!

I admit it... I love District 9 and love the props from it, especially the Prawn hand. Don't think I would ever do a Wikus costume, but love the hand all the same.

I am ALL for criticism.. Uh, that's why im here? :lol Seriously though, you are correct, the fingers are a bit shorter. Here is why, when you cast from silicone, which is far more reaslistic than latex (wearing it, feeling it, bending etc) there are limitations. The ends of my fingers are filled in to add to the effect (I wish you were holding one so you could see what I'm saying) and when you make the fingers too long, they begin to wobble. Dexterity also came into play when I was designing this arm, I wanted the person wearing it to be somewhat functional and able to do things as they are a pain to take on and off.. I wouldn't recommend wiping your butt wearing one, but you could do most things and it looks like part of your body. I went back and fourth on how long to make them and this was the best idea I came up with. They really look long in comparison to a real hand, even a big one. So I suppose I would have to say that is the one advantage that latex would have over me on this project, they could make the fingers longer - however, the wrinkles when you move your hand would be very noticeable. Ugh, the pain of it all!

Thanks for the comments.

I've attached a few pics of when I sculpted this for the movie...

My mold broke though. To many undercuts :(
