Just saw this tonight..not sure when it actualy aired.
Was a pretty fun show..not great but it looks like it has potential if it's to be a series.
Anyone else catch it?

late 80's.. It was a side project when Gerry was making Terrahawks...
Written and voiced by Shane Rimmer.

Great stuff.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to THIS version starring Stephen Mangan that the BBC aired last month... it was just a pilot for now, VERY loosely based on the original novel, but hopefully they'll commission a series soon...

While I enjoyed it, I don't think they nailed the character of Dirk as well as Harry Enfield did in the BBC Radio adaptations that Dirk Maggs produced a few years ago...

Yeah this was the recent one..I never heard the radio adaptions and only rea the book once so I couldn';t remeber how close or far they got to the character. I really need to reread it.
I'll check out the radio adaptions for sure!

From what I've read, Douglas Adams was always very protective of how his novels were carried over to other media. I think that was one of the reasons why the "hollywood" version of Hitchhikers didn't get made until after he died. I'm surprised that someone would take on Dirk Gently at all, great stories, great humor, but I just feel like the character wouldn't lend well to visual media...

Loosely, loosely, loosely based as far as the plot line is concerned but I think they nailed the overall nature of a Dirk Gently story and how everything "interconnects". I really enjoyed it and hope it gets picked up as a series.

I liked Stephen Mangan as Gently though I don't think they were aiming for a literal translation of the character in the novels. From the books Gently always struck me as basically being Douglas Adams himself with a dash of Tom Baker (maybe that's because the first book is a re-working of his script for "Shada").

Find someone that looks like they know where they're going and follow them. You may not get to where you were headed, but you'll wind up where you need to be.
