Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

Either way it would lead you to believe that the sensors inside the thing were about as accurate as a garage door opener remote. :confused

:lol

for you guys that hate this thing!?...........not sure what you expected but it is time to move on!! :lol best bang for the buck I say!
you can try to compare Hamburger to steak all day long but you are just waisting your time!! :cool

Let's face it folks. If Spock or McCoy looked at the thing while scanning, it would have only given US the back side, thereby robbing us of the beauty shot. Either that or the camera would have to be over Spock's shoulder every time he went scanning, which also would have been dull.

I have not gotten one yet. I have the MR tricorder so I don't need a science version, (it has the dumb looking scanner anyway.)
I will break down sometime and get a medical version. I already have the motor for the scanner and getting the metal for upgrades. Then I will have a nice pair to display once fully upgraded. And for a whole lot less than an MR.

Ummm... they looked at it upside down because the strap came out of the top and in order to look at it right side up, they would have to have taken it off their shouler. I assume that the screen just automatically orientated itself based on which way you were looking at it... you know, if it displayed anything other than gray.

well they could have worn it with the doors facing them! :lol I think we are making way too much out of it!! Thank God they didn't have cheesy graphics on the screens! :sick

Spock, readings

One moment please Captain. I have to take off my tricorder and re-orientate so the screen is facing me.

Why didn't you just leave the ship that way?

It would have made getting to my lolipop difficult.

Why didn't you just use the lolipop dispenser I gave you for Christmas?

Really Captain, that gift was as useful as the marshmellow dispenser you gave me for my birthday.

I put a lot of thought into those gifts.

I shall endevor to use the marshmellow dispenser the next time we around a camp fire singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

Ok I can't help it. These upgrades are looking great. I have to get in on this. For now I'll leave the Tricorder upgrades to you guys. I wanted to see if I could make a few minor changes to the med scanner.

Ok Maybe not minor. I would almost call it starting from scratch. Yea I have been getting carried away.

I took it all apart, and sanded the silver rings off both the top, and bottom of the handle. I took my dremel and removed all of the plastic inside the handle. I filled the button hole, and thumbwheel slot, and primed it. I am hoping to paint it tomorrow.

I made aluminum disks for both the top, and bottom of the handle, and attached a motor to the disk, and the rotating scanner head. I also replaced the sticker's on the scanner head with silver ones, and 2 red stripes.

After I paint it. I will put it together with a new button, sound circuit, shuffle battery.

Stapleton13,

Lookin' good!

"Gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy; I gotta clean bill of health from Doctor McCoy!"

So are there supposed to be two red stripes on the spinner or jsut one?

Mine came with only one and it was really crooked.

Spock almost never looked at the screen. I guess he read the scans by mind melding with it :lol

When I was a kid one of my friends wondered how Spock could read the tricorder without looking at the screen. I said he's a Vulcan, he can read the scans by the sound it makes. He thought that made sense :lol

McCoy held it with the screen facing him.

So did Sulu.

Mulhall looked at the screen upside down, with the head flipped all the way back. Try that with the DST :lol

The tilted back screen kinda makes sense though, the screen image could be rotated like a camcorder screen does when it's flipped.

Great job on the upgrades!

Maybe Spock was the only one they'd let have the hero prop. Maybe McCoy and Sulu kept breaking them. :lol

Darthgordon, that's hilarious! And Stapleton13, that upgrade is looking really cool!

For some reason McCoy often held the tricorder flat, with the top facing him and the lower door open, especially in the early first season. I guess DeForest was imagining there was another display screen in there. :lol

This guy has a similar idea but he's looking in the middle compartment.. counting moire spins I guess. :lol

More first-season McCoy action, with the lower door open.

Here's a rare one.. the ONLY time in the series that Kirk carries a tricorder with the strap over his shoulder, is in this brief shot from "The Man Trap". Ironically he's carrying the Tricorder FOR McCoy for some reason!

After that Kirk only holds tricorders in his hands when he has to use them.

Very interesting, phase pistol. Never noticed anyone opening the panels on the tricorder during TOS. Thanks for posting the pix and observations.

You mean the screw? That would be an easy fix for sure, there's a ton of room in that spot. Same with the missing screws on the side plates above the strap slots.

There were several episodes, especially first season, where you could see McCoy remove the hand scanner from the bottom compartment. And in The Naked Time, we see Spock and Tormolen do the same thing.

Here's Tormolen placing the scanner into the bottom of his tricorder. Note that this is the science scanner.

And in Space Seed, McCoy's tricorder on the table with the bottom open, notice the medical scanner inside.
