My first build. Sculpey on hockey mask. Feedback?

Day 1:

Sorry about the brief explaination, but I'm updating from my phone and it screwed up after I typed up this long eloquent exposition about my history in art and costuming, but alas...

Anyhow, this is the first build I've done. I've made a cenobite (correct spelling?) from hellraiser, Eddie scissorhands, and hagrid. None are SA. I like to take the character and get the feeling right. I guess it's my background in art. For example, I made the scissorhands a bit larger to point out the separation he feels. For the hagrid, I made a fur vest and used a natural fiber sweater, both thing that COULD be in hagrids closet, but not seen on screen. And, like this build, I wanted to create a minion of Pinhead, as if I were said minion.

I want to create a deatheater mask for me, as a deatheater.

So... I was remembering on an episode of american chopper where the used a pair of fishnet stockings to make a snakeskin pattern on a bike. I'm considdering doing a similar thing on this mask, but with texture. What do you think? I was also thinking about doing the same thing, but with lace instead of fishnets.

Ideas, oppinions?

Ok, guys. I've found myself at a stand still. Three nights in a row, I've pulled the sculpture out to work on it, and done nothing, because I realize that I can't do anything else, because I need to put the finishing details on it the same night I'm going to mold it so I don't have to deal with cracks from letting it sit overnight.

I've searched the rpf as best as I can. My Internet is out, so I'm using my iPhone. I know I've seen the info before, but I can't find it again.

I used sculpey to sculpt it. I want to cast it in a plastic type resin material. What products can I use that will not react with the sculpey? Can I just paint on silacone and then use plaster for a mother mold? And if that would work, what material should I cast it in? I'm talking brand names, and where to buy them.

Thanks in advance... And also apologies.

I've ony got limited experience, and have only scan read this so I may have missed something, but I think you should be OK if you use something like Chavent clay.

I used it for my Voldemort build and that took me weeks to do. I just covered it to stop dust getting into it, but otherwise it was fine.

I'm gonna take a mold and cast it. This is way too heavy as is. Do you know if I can just hit it with a heat gun, seal it with poly, mold it in silicone and plaster... Then cast it in what?

I need to know brand names for each product. I've seen rebound 25 thown around on this site, as well as plastipaste. If I use those, what light weight material can I cast it in?

As far as silicones, I like using brushable silicone moldmaking materials, as they help avoid wasting, and are thus very cost efficient. I use plaster of paris for my mothermolds, but ultracal 30 is probably better as it is more durable.

As far as casting, I could use some advice too for casting jason hockey masks. using fiberglass cloth just doesn't seem to work for me (bubbles form between the mold and the glass).

Best of luck, dude.

Thanks, guys.

I went out and purchased the stuff to make the mold. When I got home, I realized I grabbed a pot of latex instead of silicone. I guess they were next to each other. It still says it's for mold making. Any feedback on this. Should I just call it a loss and go back for silicone?

re worked the mouth area. Considering shortening th distance from nose to chin by shortening chin. Whaddya think?

Looking good my friend! The brow changes def add to it.

Looking at your pic, the dark areas here and there in the nostrils and around the eyes; are they just the black surface from the mask underneath showing through? Or might they be pockets or gaps between the mask and the clay?

I marked and example of what I'm talking about in the pic below.

This is the kind of comment I look for!
It's the strangest thing, actually. I put the sculpey on top of a hockey mask. The hocky mask seems to be breaking down, and oozing a very sticky black saplike substance. I think it's a coating on the mask that is dissolving.

I will double check for gaps, though. Also, should I fill in the eye sockets from back, as well. I noticed on an army of two mask that somebody on here made that they filled in the eyes and cut them out of the casting. What are your thoughts?

For sure check for gaps and such.
I might suggest making the clay flush up to those areas sealing any possible crevasses that the molding material could seep into causing mold lock. And your def going to want to close up the eyes holes before molding.

Def address the black ooze. It very well could inhibit the curing of the molding material, especially if you use silicone.

I don't use sculpey clays, so maybe someone could chime in who has with the right product recommendation/method. But I'm thinking some sort of sealer coat over it before molding to make sure the black substance wont leak through?

I am good friends with a guy who makes prosthetics for film and the haunted house industry. He sugests sealing anything made with sculpey with a spray polyurathane before molding it. He also said to use latex for the mold.

this is my makeshift 'oven' I had the hairdryer set to 'hot' and the speed set to low. I 'baked' it for 45 minutes. It worked fine. I had some cracking, but that was expected. I planned in filling them, but after seeing them, I like the look. Now I'm torn... Pun intended!

Just sealed it in poly. Gonna let that dry/cure/whatevz overnight. Then mold release and latex and plaster bandages.

Turns out, I might be pretty good at this.

Sooooo... I thought I fixed the cracks before I poly'd it... Something happened while the poly was drying, because the cracks came back with a vengence!

Can I still fill the cracks w/ bondo? Or should I make the mold, cast some masks with cracks in fiberglass, make a solid cast of plaster, fix the cracks on the plaster cast, then make a mold of it! Cast masks without cracks.
