Daybreakers - Just Saw It

Just saw Daybreakers. Nice to see vampires reacting properly to sunlight! Not a bad movie. In the story, vampirism is caused by a virus (spread through biting). I can "believe" (work with me here) that a virus could cause all the usual characteristics that vampires have, but there was one thing that must rely on a supernatural explanation that appeared in the film -- Ethan Hawk's character had no reflection in a mirror.

(Spoilers)

But anyway, I enjoyed the movie and found it to be an original take on the mythos. Seeing the everyday items redesigned for use by vampires was cool. bit bloody at the end, but watching the vampire soldiers attacking the humans, transforming to human, and then becoming victims themselves was cool too. Nice to see Jay Laga'aia make a small appearance as a vampire senator.

The virus causes photons to be absorbed by the vampire body and ensures they can't reflect off a mirror to give a person an image in it. Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I suppose a side affect of this condition is the aversion to ultra violet light? :)

Just got home from seeing it. It was okay. Not as great as I'd hoped. It was kinda like a glimpse at what the original concept for Blade 3 might have looked like, minus Blade of course.

The mirror/no reflection thing didn't really fit. There's just no sense for it IMHO.

And personally, I thought the vampires exploding was a bit over the top too.

I saw it on friday, didn't particularly care for it. That the the theater we were in had the volume to high, had to cover my ears everytime the vampires screeched and the action parts.:eek

We went to see it last night and while Mirax was entertained... I thought there was virtually no redeeming value to be seen. Just didn't care for it at all. I must be getting old and picky...

"You darn kids, got off my lawn! And stop playing with my props!" :lol

Sorry Art - I couldn't resist.

Who's on my lawn?

Just got back from seeing this film with my girl. We both loved it, her being a vampire fan who liked a unique take on the genre, and I for it being a vampire film that wasn't effing Twilight related. Gotta admit this movie was a big case of Our Vampires Are Different.

I thought the filmmakers did a great job with world-building. I was fascinated to see the hi-tech noir of the vampire world.

That being said, I would have like to have seen more of that. The ending was kinda 'meh'. It just ends.

When Ethan Hawke turns back into a human, and he wearing his vest...Han Solo. Which makes the other two Leia and Chewbacca! :lol

Yeah, the ending was too untied. I expected them to stick the "cured" blood in the new product they developed, to reconvert the entire population.

That's because they want SEQUELS!!! heh heh :lol

The next movie will probably be either that the cure has some unfortunate long term effects, or a war on them by more government giants. hell, i was hoping for a war with the blood-starved mutants at the end of this film, so I could see that happening as well.

Saw it tonight. Was alright, pretty blooody. Cheeered when I saw Jay, and cried out:

"Not capatain Typhoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111" when they showed he had been killed :lol

I really enjoyed the depth of the world they created. I agree, the mirror bit was a tad out of whack. I thought it was far better than Thirty Days of Night or any of the young adult vamp romance stuff. I loved the arterial spray of the vampires feeding. Nothing romantic about that. It was really more of a science fiction film than a horror. Nothing wrong with that by me.

Up until 1922 they were night-dwellers who had to return to their coffins by day, but otherwise had no problems with the sun.

It has been about 40 years since I have read "Dracula", but as I recall he could walk about in the daylight, he just didn't have any powers.

Now if you are talking about Vampire legends, then yes they could not walk about in the daylight. Vampires were possessed souls that left the grave at night, to return to their graves by dawn. Different tactics were used to keep them at their graves. large amounts of grain or seeds so that they would spend all night counting them. String with so many knots that they would spend the time until dawn untying the knots. Some times Vampires were nothing more than a nuisance, after all who wants to see their deceased, and buried loved one wandering the countryside at night. Other times they were bloodsuckers. By all accounts they were pretty mindless.

Movie Vampires make for a more dynamic and interesting villain than the ones of legend.

David.
