Interest Davy Jones Chest

Oooohhhh good spot! That is detail I have missed. Thank you. I will defiantly be adding that in.

Here are some other screenshots, they might be helpful for the colors. Also in the close-up of one of the borders it seems the design is mirrored vertically as well, I've indicated where I think the middle is.

No, I didn't have a ruler or even think to bring something to measure with. Using calibrated eyeballs I'd say it was over a foot long, probably in the 14-16 inch range.
'Course. Sounds like the dims on the Master Replicas version were good.

Those look like screen caps of the prop behind-the-scenes. Can I ask where you found those?

It's from an easter egg clip on the Dead Man's Chest blu-ray about a prop painter, it's not in HD though. I could upload it if you want but there's only a few quick shots of the chest.

That's good of you. But I have the blu-ray so if you can tell me where I can find it, that would be great?
If you are playing the bonus disc blu-ray on PC, you can click on the eyes of the skull on top of the screen. Then you should get a new screen from where you can access all easter eggs, you can see the painter one by clicking the right torch. If you're using a remote, you can follow the instructions here under easter eggs, 4) Rewind @ www.dvdcompare.net - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Blu-ray) (2006)

Great thanks for this. I know what I'm doing this afternoon!

Glad I could help! The 3d movie also has a bonus HD clip about the beating heart of Davy Jones which has some nice closeups of the sculpting & paint of the heart if you're interested in that.

Oh yes I'd love to see pics of that if someone could post them please?

Last week I have been making my own ebonising liquid. Takes a week to dissolve the steel wool but its only a few days out now.

Here is my test metal insert. This was cast in pewter, its really heavy and satisfying to hold. This chest is going to weigh a tonne! As it should be in my opinion. Patina effect added. Really liking how its looking. It looks so genuine. This model was cast before DavyVO pointed out a few details I had missed. I've already modelled those in but haven't had the chance to print/recast a panel yet so please bare with me.

I also couldn't resist trying my ebonising liquid on some lovely hardwood walnut. I applied it, then a light coating of danish oil to give it a lovely shine. I think I went a bit too far as its really black. I would like hints of the brown showing through. Still... loving how these tests are coming out. Ill soon be able to get on and make the framework from Walnut. Pretty sure ill be going with Walnut at this point.

Ill start a proper thread in the prop forum next time I have any updates. Move across to there but I wanted to show what i've been up too.

amazing work! can't believe you are going to go with actual wood and full metal inserts! do you have any idea on price? this will be very high end.
once again, really impressed that you are trying that and wishing you good luck for that very cool project!

Price is something I have been trying to figure out. Now I know what materials would produce the best product, walnut and pewter, I am wondering if it would be too costly to offer on a run. Your vaguely looking at £200 for the Walnut and £400 for the Pewter. Factor in other processes, materials, man hours etc... that's the kicker. I'm not sure its viable. I would need to charge in the region... minimum of £1000+ / $1400+. I need to give it some more thought.

Honestly, what you are showing so far is really impressive, the market for really high end objects with a bigger price point is much smaller, but I think if this is something that you are doing for you anyways, try to calculate your cost seriously and show a prototype to people, there might be people on board even for the price you are imagining so far :)
You might find cheaper walnut though, £200 seems a bit expensive for what you need, maybe with larger boards from another supplier, you can lower your price quite a bit there.
good luck, i'm really looking forward to see more of that project!
