Dave Prowse banned from C5 !!

Ah, good ol´ entitlement issues ;)

IIRC GL was one of the first to hand out profit points to everyone who worked on his movies.

If Dave Prowse really went for the lump sum, then it´s his decision, especially if he did not believe in the success of the movie.

GL and Lucasfilm took the financial risk of making that movie. And we all know that at first NO studio wanted to make it, and only after a long while 20th Century Fox agreed to finance it. And even then it was a huge risk everyone was taking, to such an extent that GL got sick. IIRC GL signed away a huge chunk of his director´s salary when the movie started to go over budget. Correct me if I´m wrong.

So, everybody had something to lose, except for, uh, well...

... all actors with contracts that granted them their fixed salaries.

So, WHY should anyone who is not partaking in the risks of a venture be entitled to the money that is earned ?! And especially the actors, who (more or less) act out (!) what the writer and director actually tell them to do? Granted, they bring in all their experience, their likeness and such, but if a film bombs because of their bad acting I don´t think they have to pay some of their salary back.

And I ask, what would have been satisfactory for DP as an amount of money?

It´s always a tough decision, I´m in a commission that deals with copyright issues and how the additional money a movie generates should be divided up. The directors claim 66%, the rest is divided within the group of DoPs, editors, production designers and costume designers. All of them have copyrights because of their creative input into the movie. But I can tell you, the fights about who gets what share are not pretty.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the same thing go for Antony Daniels, Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew that are in the same boat? Aren't they making residuals? These guys were also in "suits" , no face and no voice.

I just looked on Box Office Mojo and Jedi was made for around 32.5 Million and to date has made so far $475,106,177.... Check for yourself:

Return of the Jedi (1983) - Box Office Mojo

..and they claim there hasn't been a profit?????? So I guess 'ol Georgy hasn't had to pay any taxes on this "non-profit" film? Pretty slick bookeeping if you ask me.
Pay the man George!... or do you really think the few pennies he should get is going to put a big dent in your already over inflated pocketbook? This man deserves better.

Just an added comment.....I feel bad for Prowse and I don't believe this film has never made a profit....just doesn't make any sense. If Prowse has residuals coming to him they should pay him but maybe theres more to this than anyone knows and LFL may be in the right. The only way we'll ever actually know is if George and Prowse will sit down to an interview one day and we'll all find out the truth....which I doubt will EVER happen.

Really it is hard to speculate on this without seeing the contract. I would assume since he has not persued legal action the contract is worded in such a way to favor LFL. I seem to remember this fued goes back to Prowse spilling the beans on vader being lukes father in an interview somewhere around the release of ESB.

As far as him charging for autographs. It isnt like he lives in Pittsburg and drove over for the day he had to fly there from England and take his time to be there. I don't fault celebs for charging for autographs as long as they are nice about it and take pictures and interact with the fans and such.

nooooo david prowse...noooooo money for you!

*i love this gl image, i may just have to post it in every thread henceforth:)

leave indiana alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I met Prowse at the Pittsburgh Comiccon, he was charging 10.00 an autograph. Matter of fact he was the only one charging for autographs, he didn't have much of a line and he sure didn't get my cash.

10.00 for an autograph is nothing. Most celebs charge a lot more than that for an autograph and then your lucky if they will even say a hello to you.

he doesnt charge boatloads of fanboys $20+ for his autograph compounded over the last 30 years....
come on. he was some guy inside a suit. he didnt lend his voice... he didnt lend his face....

Prowse has a fairly high credit listing as Darth Vader, so by that logic he is Darth Vader.

As I understand it, it's not the guests who charge for the autographs at shows - It's the organisers. The money you pay for an autograph goes to fund their travel and accomodation, after which they get a certain fee which (I believe) is a set amount, regardless of how many autographs they sign.

The rest all goes into the show's profits.

At least, that's how I understand it works.

Nope.

Usually they have a fee for showing up. A perdium for food etc. and then make all of the proffits for their autos... some bigger cons get a percentage but the celebs usually have a manager or handler for their money. I know I handled Kenny Bakers money for autos one year at adcon... it was a LOT. I've also helped with Prowse, Mayhew, and Daniels. Kenny is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Dave is funny and has a lot of good stories to tell as well as Mayhew. Daniels? You gotta catch him at the right moment and don't EVER bring him a subway sandwich when he asks for a tuna sandwich. (my buddy found out the hard way! LOL!!!)

The convention organizers make profit from the vendors and ticket sales... its... a LOT.

But what do I know? :angel

Right or wrong, you don't speak negatively about the hosts if you want them to invite you to their party. It shouldn't be a surprise.

Scott

Gotta agree with Scott on this one.

I've heard Mr Prowse go on a little rant once. Occasionally you press a wrong button with someone about something and it can become personal.

There really is more to this than we'll probably ever know.

From what I gather, Lucas gave prowse the option of picking a wookie or the main bad guy... He didn't know his face would be covered... Then closer to filming he was dissapointed to find out he was wearing a mask... then as we all know he THOUGHT his voice was going to be used (Glad it wasn't but if I were him I woulda been upset too)

Then they don't pay him for Jedi? SERIOUSLY? Yes he shouldn't have made that info public, but you know it is probably true!

I know first hand how LFL handles people that make a small ripple... yes he shoulda kept his mouth shut. But ya know... that's about all he's got. He's always been nice to me. I've had dinner with him more than a couple times and just kinda feel sorry for the guy. He's no saint but then again... who is?

Just my 2 cents

I feel bad (sorta) for all the cast members. Didn't they sign a form so they don't get any cash from merchandise too?

They did?? Ouch!! I thought Alex Guiness took a really small paycheck to do the part, but only if he got a small percentage of all gross from films and merchandise..... not sure where I heard that??? I thought his family still to this day received checks from that agreement.

I thought I heard that they didn't get any money from merchandising. I might be wrong.

Something to keep in mind, prior to the A New Hope there wasn't merchandising to the degree it is today, odds are even if offered the choice between a % of the sales or a lump sum, most actors from the first movie would take the lump sum, everybody knew the movie was going to flop when it was in production.
