Come on, every time the movie airs on TV, they are supposed to pay royalties... unless specified otherwise in the contract. Maybe Lucasfilm is trying to pull the same stunt back when they released the Special Edition films. They only released promotional merchandise that had characters not associated with "real faces", so no royalties had to be paid to the actors, since the "character" or the image of that character belongs to Lucasfilm: Darth Vader, C3PO, R2 and Yoda. Of course, Luke, Leia and Han belong to LF, but they are portrayed in the likeness of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. That's why there were no promotional merchandise with any of them. No pretty face on merchandise, no need to write a check.
Even tho, how can they say the film didn't make any profit??? Really?
