Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 4/7/13

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

PM me your email and ill send you what I have.

Not much to update. Work has had me bogged down and the army has taken up my weekends :/. I'm looking to be at Megacon next weekend though, and planning to have an armor party not much sooner after.

I may be commissioning someone to get work done for me on this as Im feeling the stress of getting this done for C6. As for moldin the helmet, it appears that I'm on my own and will have to use a weekend to do so...

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

Thanks guys! Getting frustrated cause I just don't have the time to work on anything. I'm looking to do the mold on a weekend...whenever I get a free one :/

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

Alright, well enough is enough...Getting kinda irritated that it's taken this long. Spring break for me is about 2 weeks away, so I'm ordering the molding supplies by this weekend. A rough estimate for everything I need to do this is about $200+-

I still haven't decided on the mother mold material, whether it be hydrocal, fiberglass or a custom resin mix....

Hang in there dude! All of those products you mentioned have their merits. I try to avoid fibreglass as much as possible but it is really good for jackets over silicone.

Hows the helmet form looking these days?

you did a lot of work and it´s really great looking!

Sure as hell trying! The helmet is still pretty much the same, I haven't done a whole lot more since my last update. Biggest reason being that it's not structurally as strong as it was before. It'll hold up to the molding but any warping that can occur will be mainly on the rear section, which I'm going to be fixing with for the final master.

Did the math, using all products, and shipping to include Smoth-on Shell shock resin, $332 after shipping. Now, I can't screw up...

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

yeah I think it's a good call to take a quick mould off your existing WIP, especially if you've got structural issues. If you can get one good cast off the temp mould it'll put you in a good place to finish off all the detailing.

I have over the last year or so become a huge fan of wood and metal files to do alot of shaping with; they are nice and flat and take only the tops off everything and you can get through large amounts of material quickly without losing the original shape :confused

Looking forward to seeing that first cast!

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

Same here! Just learned that Jangojedi pulled out his helmet sip, and it's looking pretty good. He appears to have a slightly different interpretation going but looks good none the less! Makes me just want to finish it already!

As for the tooling, I'll be focusing alot on filling and smoothing, and sharpening the details!

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

Did a hard comparison to my reference and notice subtle things that I need to adjust to make it more accurate...need to sharpen the inside rim of the eyes (outside are good), I'm going to raise up the middle top portion of the frown to make it more distinguished and squared off. Things to do once I have a hard casting, is to bring in and close out the aerator openings, and curve in those areas to close the helmet ring a bit. I need to make one ear cap a little larger since the "better" one is a tad bigger.

Lots of little things but I feel I can do this!

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 1/13/12 clone armor in!!

yeah once you've got a hard helmet to work on I think things will sharpen up nicely. I'm a big fan of surface priming the object every now and again so you can see where to go next and what needs filling and smoothing out. Good luck!

Yes yes yes! That is something that is irking me non stop everytime I look at this sculpt, I just wish I could grab my sander and go away but then I have to remember it's just clay!! :darnkids

Anyways, started making the fixes today. Got one eye finished and looking a hell of alot more accurate then before and I started redoing the frown. I think I got the shape I want (need), which IMO makes the helmet look "different" then before, and I think that subtle change in angles really makes it appear more like the in game model. Just need to finish re-doing the teeth...

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 2/25/12 Helmet Adjustments Begins..

hey it looks great dude, what a monster!

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 2/25/12 Helmet Adjustments Begins..

Yes it's a massive helmet! Good for a massive person like me!

I ordered the molding stuff last night and it shipped out earlier today. Since its in-state UPS, there's a chance it can arrive here tomorrow..

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 2/25/12 Helmet Adjustments Begins..

Thanks!

Ok, well I should have been asleep an hour ago but got to work with the helmet (no new pics just yet) but I started making more corrections for accuracy. Here I present a side-by-side comparison. The 2nd one having annotations to show the areas to be re-worked (what's left at least)

One of the biggest things I kinda hesitated on redoing were the forward "tube" sections that lead into the areator location. The game model depict the starting point/line as where the frown points down on each side. My sculpt's version has it starting higher than the frown. I already cut one side down tonight, need to do the other.

The areator portion I initially was wanting to hold off until after molding, but I've already formed the "ring" on the left side with clay, and filled in the opening somewhat to give a good base foundation to work with later on. I plan to use short/squatty areators.

That's it for now...off to bed for me...

its great seeing it next to the game pic. Personally I like your version better!

You might want to trim the centre of the frown a bit but honestly I think your version has more of the TK helmet feel to it. Nce work dude!

Thanks, just want it to be accurate! Investing a good amount of money in this and I'd like to get it right the first time around.

I actually used alot of TK reference when I initially started this. Reason being, is that since it's obviously a "blown up" TK helmet, I needed a good starting point for the details and how they are supposed to look. But I think I strayed too much into the regular TK realm and kinda "made up" in my mind what the helmet *should* look like. That's not good at all for accuracy sometimes. My girlfriend kinda pointed that out to me

Re: Darktrooper Progress Thread update: 2/25/12 Helmet Adjustments Begins..

Chris, I don´t think that you should compare it too religiously to the game model with it´s very, very low poly count.

I can´t see anything that´s wrong with your current sculpt?
