Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Hey Darkside, thanks for the hard work.
I tried the 0.95 but it ended up being way too small so I had to smash it, it was such a shame :(

Do you think I can get the 0.96? Hopefully it'll work for me.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

I don't mean to spam this thread so forgive me (I work night shift so I tend to post when not many other people are online). Anyways, I was looking at the helmet file and I noticed that some grooves are just colored grey instead of actually indented grooves. For instance the checks and the line going from the eyes to the back of the head. Am I wrong that they are not actual grooves? If not what exactly am I expected to do if I want those grooves? grind it down with a dremel later in the process? thanks for the help.

Yes, You are right. I am trying to make these files as easy to build as possible and I got a lot of complaints about all the grooves in the V1 armor and from talking to the top guys here on the RPF that have taken pep files and turned them into master pieces I have learned that most of them add the grooves in later. They either use a dremmel tool, hand tools, or wire to add the grooves in during the finishing stages.

Downloaded the new helmut and it looks fantastic! Very well done! You have a paypal so I can show you support?

Thank you for the compliment and for wanting to support my work. There is more information on the first post about donating. I am always very grateful for any contributions that are sent my way. As a token of my appreciation, anyone that send in a donation will be added to the VIP list. This also means that you will get 2 months early access to the V2 files when they are done. If you have any other questions feel free to send me a PM. Thanks.

I can add the file in a .96. Do you need that as a pepakura file and on letter sized paper?

Also, DevilFlash has brought to my attention that I had not posted a tip on the jaw. I meant to say something about it previously but completely forgot. Anyways, if you look at the reference images of the Mk VII helmet you may notice that the 'lip' on the lower jaw is a separate section and sticks out a little more than the jaw itself. I tried to make this helmet as easy to build as possible and that is something that is better added when building or finishing the helmet rather rather than having it in the pep file and trying to add a thin strip of paper for the added width of the lip. I would suggest cutting out some strips of cardstock and putting them between the tabs on the jaw and the lip. A couple layers should be sufficient. This will give it the accurate protrusion you see on the actual helmet.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Tried my hand at some hand plates last night with EVA foam from Michaels. Noob mistake, forgot to scale them. Going to utilize them in my customer Rescue build after my MK7 build. Thanks Darkside501st and all who contribute. Checkout my thread for pics and updates.

Need to figure out how to add my thread to my signature... :confused

At the top of the page click the link that says "User CP" then that opens there is a link on the left that should say "Edit Signature". You can deal with all that in there.

Actually, just to be safe, and to not waste your time, can I get the 0.97 pepakura on letter size? I'm around 5"9-5"10 and I need a bit space for electronics, hinges, and servos, do you think that's a good scale? I'm open to suggestions, thanks again!!!!

I took my time and watched IM2 and Avengers again. The protrusion of the lower lip bothered me a lot more than expected :lol

I took two snapshots from the avengers for the MK6 and MK7 helmet and one from IM2. If there is a protrusion, I can't find it (except under the "teeth" part).

This is for the MK6 helmet:

My humble opinion, and I'm open to any discussion, is that your file is, indeed, easier to build but also a little bit more accurate. But I'm really new in costume making and people largely more talented than me made their helmet with the protrusion (Surreal Studios, ProjectEarth7, Xrobot, Stealth,...) so, still don't know what to think about it. :unsure

that's because there isn't a protusion in the mark 7 helmet i ve senn hundreds of mark 7 images and there isn't a protusion ! i am 3d modelling a helmet and im pkretty sure there isnt

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

The two first pictures are MK6 helmets. No protrusion either. I first thought that was one of the difference between the MK6 and MK7. I checked the MK3 and still couldn't find a protrusion.

So far I arrived to the conclusion that the MK6 had a unique design, so watched again the movies, and no protrusion.

Maybe it's from the comics and I admit I haven't read a single one IM comics and present my apologies ^^ I'm from Belgium, so I'm more used to our classic comic albums (such as Tintin).

The Mark 4 and 6 are the same helmet only the chest plate was changed from suit to suit. Here are some of the pics (mark 3 and 4) that I used for reference when building my helmet, as you can see there is a lip protrusion. It could be that the hero helmets and CGI helmets differed a bit

yes its because of the cgi there is a protusion in the mark 6 one but not in the mark 7!

Nice looking suit, can't wait to see what you can do with the Mk VII files.

You got it. I will try to get that uploaded tomorrow.

Well, on the Mk VII helmet in some pics you see a slight protrusion and in others you don't. I definately blame the fact that they did the whole movie in CGI. In any case, if you decide to add this feature then it would be very hard to get such a slight protrusion using the traditional building methods in pepakura which is why I suggest simply stacking a couple layers of cardstock between the jaw and the lip section. This can give you the right amount of protrusion. Check out these pics from my reference images link:

I am also adding some hires images to my gallery of the Mk VII from ComicCon at the IM3 booth. They will be up in an hour or so.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Thanks for the informations!

The protrusion is much more visible on your ref pictures Surreal! And the differences between CGI and real helmets complicate things a little bit more. Add the differences between the MK6 and MK7 where the protrusion seems even more slight (and not present on every picture) and you have a great source of confusion :D

Darkside, I'll follow your advice by adding a small layer or two of cardstock for the slight protrusion!

Great community! Thanks for the fast, detailed and illustrated answers!

Darkside, why is the helmet only available through the viewer and not the designer?

To prevent anyone from exporting out the 3d model that Darkside501st has spent so much time working on.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

I'm not entirely sure exactly how snug the tester helm is supposed to be, but I'm looking for some input on the scale compared to my frame at least. It doesn't look too big IMO but I need a 2nd set of eyes.

Photo Sample

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

Not too big at all.

Don't know if you plan to add motorization and how much place you have left in your tester helmet, but if it's already tight, you may want to build a slightly bigger helmet.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files **Update Jan 3, 2013**

nah, if anything its too big. I'm just not certain how much front/back room I should have. I know there will be padding for sure and electronics(if I can figure them out) but I guess it will just take putting one together and trying it out. Thanks for the input though.

Does anyone have any advice on getting the scaling at least close to right in Pepakura before printing? I have had to remake every part because of it being to big or to small and at this rate I will have a whole suit or 2 of to big/small parts. I have tried measuring my body and converting it to mm and comparing it to the mm in the scale screen but it doesn't seem to work. Does width mean my left to right and height mean my lower to higher etc? That's what I have been assuming. Or does it depends on the model and who made it?
