Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - Password in First Post

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - New Pics pg 100!!

So that is my progress. I tried my hand at one of the gauntlets, but I kept making them too small. I just used little 3mm foamies for $1 at Hobby Lobby to make 'em, so it's not like they were costing loads of money to make. Just frustrating is all. Trying to get the measurements right. Trial and error, yay.

I think I have the opposite problem, I still have to finish the gauntlet but I think it's too big... but still not sure... :confused:confused

What scale are you using? (width, depth, height) Maybe we can average them out and meet somewhere in the middle?

On the other hand (ha), apply a quick coat of resin or epoxy (whichever method you prefer) and then see how well you can close your hand. If your fingers can't grip a cup, then it's too big. Think about Robert Downey, Jr. for instance. The costume designers in Iron Man 2 had to make the Mark VI so he could hold the microphone with a gloved hand.

I'm a total noob when it comes to this type of stuff. I must say I'm totally amazed at the work you guys are doing. Some guys I know have now convinced me (along with seeing these pieces of art) to create a suit as well and guess what I'm doing the Mk VII. I'm excited to get started on this project.

Lol..I'll be doing my research on the forums before I start asking all sorts of noob questions to you guys.

Ball - remember you're going to end up throwing down some fiberglass cloth on the inside as well and maybe some hardware to light it up so you might need a little room. I think they look like a good fit.

Please feel free to finish my gauntlet thats been sitting on my desk now for about 3 weeks ;)

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - New Pics pg 100!!

I measured my hand at the knuckles as it seemed to me the most easy point to measure in both my hand and the 3d model. That dimension is pretty right at the glove.
It seemed to me like I had too much room at the wrist. But once complete, the onening of the wrist gets a bit smallet, so I guess it's ok.

Today I will try to start with the bondo on my helmet and do the first xoat of resin on the glove :)

Only if you finish some of my electronics projects that have been waiting for more than a year! :p

I don't know if you know this but, the glove they used for that was a robber glove for better articulation and gripping... what I am planing to do is cut the glove's up into 4 parts so the thumb is one the palm is another and the knuckles and the back of the hand are to more then I will attach them with an elastic band or something like that giving me move articulation while still maintaining the hardness of the fiberglass and bondo/body filler

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - New Pics pg 100!!

Question: edge 783 and 784 on the mask, is the fat black line supposed to face down onto the edges on the corrosponding piece? or is it the "flaps". If it's the black it feels like that piece has to rotate a fair bit, which feels a bit unatural in terms of the cut, but on the other hand I dont see it fitting if it's not like that.

I actually didn't know that. But that's pretty cool. I think I may pick up a pair of cheap rubber gloves and paint them red, then add some of the details to it so I can actually use them for gripping. With time constraints, I gotta improvise a little. I think I am gonna make the Mark VI as my "prodigal child" (the suit with all the electronics and technology), and just finish this Mark VII by October. Unless I put it on hold and get to work on the Mark 42 using Jackieisrockin's files. At least then I'd be a little more up-to-date.

here's a clip of what I was talking about (fast foreword to 1:00) Selling Iron Man armor - YouTube but yeah that sound's pretty sweet... I also have plans on making the iron patriot/ war machine mark II at some point but the I M mark VII will most likely be my "prodigal child" with all the tech

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - New Pics pg 100!!

Little progress update on that helmet with Darkside's file. getting happier with it now I managed to pretty much make the line running along the side and back of the helmet look even, smooth and clean enough.and getting to work on the rings around the ears, made the skull and faceplate a little smoother still. Far from finished. IMAG0323.jpg IMAG0324.jpg

I know it's not much progress for an update pic, but I'm really trying to get this as right as I can. It's a beautiful file and I wanna do it justice, and my thread's getting no love as far as any help for things i'm coming to really need advice on.

I'd like to know what'd be the best suggestions for sculpting out those earpod rings so that they form a proper smooth circle, and I'd like to have any ideas on forming screwhead indents into faceplate sides.
Last thing I 'd like to get advice on is particular methods and measurements to place cutting lines for when I cut the faceplate off, as the lines I was using are lost under the bondo, even though i've done a few approximate traces with pen. thanks for any help :) and thanks infinitely to darkside501st.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - New Pics pg 100!!

BTW, what I'm applying to the helmet isn't "bondo" filler. In the store i bought the fiberglass the only thing they had was "gel coat" which I thought was the same as "bondo", it turns out that although I think is similar, it's much more fluid than a filler... I had to apply it with a brush and the thickness of each coat is about 1 mm at most. So this requires a lot of work to fill a big gap.

I have found now a couple of stores that sell real filler, not that I'm unhappy with this "gel coat" but it requires too much work, maybe for the next pieces I will use filler :unsure

Also, I'm not sure if I'm going to cast my helmet or not... it may depend on how well it turns out, but I would like to have 3 or 4 helmets to try different things and not to worry if I break one :)

Does it require much work to do a cast? I mean, compared to building another helmet does it require 50% of the time? 25%? :D

Is it better to cast the helmet before or after cutting the faceplate/back??

I have located a shop that sells any requested automotive paint in spray can, I think I'm going to do the popular choice of colors "Toreador Red Effect Clearcoat FL" and "Sunburst Gold Metallic Clearcoat BP/M6924" do you guys have any other color suggestion?

Lots of questions today!!! :D :D

PD: not so much progress since las photo, but this is the state of the helmet right now :D

its normal you are unhappy with the gelcoat !
the gelcoat is used to repair boats ... its like polyester resin but with a different consistancy!
alot of members use it to make fiberglass cast because its consistancy allow it to cover all the details !

So, apart from all the extra work I have to do now, what do you think of the durability of the gelcoat? will be the same? if it's used for boats I hope it will be! :D

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - New Pics pg 100!!

Well i am quite impressed that you used it as a filler !
It shod have reinforced your helmet alot!
Beside of that gelcoat itself is a little weak if not back with fiberglass !

As for your previous question it is alot faster to make mold and copies
Making the silicone mold can take you 2 days if you take your time
And making copy using gelcoat..1h or 2h.
I would suggest to mold the helmet parts separate
So it will require less clean up
