Dark Crystal shard... has it been done?

Watched the film again the other night, and got to wondering about this. I know a lot of us here are into this one as well as a lot of Henson's other stuff, but has anyone ever made a replica of the Dark Crystal shard? It would most definately be cool to see...
for those of you who can't recall what it looks like (it'd been awhile since i'd watched the movie too )

I would be shocked if it has not been made, but I have not seen one. I haven't thought about that movie in awhile - but it is a great idea.
There also seems to be some talented folks around here when it comes to Crystal making/designing - hopefully one of them with jump in.

Yup, its been done. Its been a while since they were offered, though. The run I'm thinking of was back in '01, I believe.

01 was before my residency here, so sadly i missed out. any idea who headed up that run? i'd be interested in contacting him to see if i couldn't persuade him into reviving it

There had been talk of a possible new run over at PropCirlce.com, but there hasn't been any new information added to that thread in a month and half :confused

While I have read mention of previous shard replicas around the various forums, I've never seen pics posted nor have I ever seen any turn up in the Junk Yard. I have my doubts that they really exist :lol

Yup, there was a run done on this board, used to own one but I gave it to a friend as a gift. He still has it so I'll see if he can take a couple of shots of it, even came with a nice case and display but I can't remember who did the run.

not certain if purple hue is color option at any of the factories he uses though... perhaps he'd be able to do a clear and paint them a purple hue.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.... back to the discussion at hand.

I'm pretty sure that the prop was a clear crystal (just check the screne cap in the first post) and the coloration was the result of practicle lighting effects. I would much rather have a clear replica, and achieve the purple color with LEDs in the display base/case/stand/whatever I come up with.

I always thought it was clear too.
If I remember correctly, the shard didn't show any colour until Jen started playing the flutey thing and that singled it out from all the other shards in Augra's collection.
Didn't it then go back to being clear?

Yep, I agree. The prop is clear. There are a few situations in the movie where the crystal "glows" purple, but it's due to someone off screen shining a purple light on it and crystal refracting that light source.

if someone can design it in 3d, or made a sculpture of it or something, the guys at the factory i use can replicate it.

Hmmm... how many orders would you need for a run? I assume that they can do clear crystal, correct?

Also, based on your experience with this company, would you venture a guess at the per unit cost?

theres no minimum order, its just the more pieces we order, the lower the price becomes.

as far as ballpark price, i honestly dunno. id need some kind of measurements to give em to get something worked out. close up pics, anything really. the more detailed something is, the higher the price, but this looks pretty simple compared to my returns crystal. i can hazard a guess (and this is just me) of somewhere in the 50$/pc to get em stateside. might be more, might be less. id need specifics to run past the company to get a hard quote done.

they re-open in a week or so, so we have plenty of time to hammer out the details

oh yea, any color really, clear, purple, green, blue, yellow, etc.

btw - not trying to hop in and hog the project, just offering up to be a middle man if someone wants to get these done in crystal. don't wanna step on any toes.

I certainly wasn't looking for a hard number guarantee. Just a ball park figure. I'd say that roughly $50/piece is something worth pursuing. I'd be willing to go $20 above that if need be.

I'll see what kind of reference material I can scratch together.
