Ok guys I think it’s time I started my own thread here to hopefully contribute to this awesome site. I’ve been a frequent lurker here for quite some time now and saw some very cool things come by. This made my head spin because the closet nerd in me wanted to build it all. So as you may expect I’ve made quite the wish list, but where to start?
I did some more snooping around and found out my best bet to start in the whole prop building was to do a TDK suit out of foam. I researched quite a bit and found some very helpful threads but the one that won me over was Obsidiank's. (thank you very much!)
So the plan is to follow his method and shamelessly use the accessories he found.
I want to use the following things (most of the items listed here are bought at a local crafts store so the Dutch guys on here would benefit from this info but I’m sure others can google their way to a store near them.
TDK cowl by Coofunkcurly $ 200 shipped Pending approval from the girlfriend. This is what she describes as a completely unnecessary and very stupid buy. I on the other hand disagree and try to win her over by telling her about the craftsmanship that went in to this piece and how much it would compliment my suit. So here’s hoping good reasoning will prevail :-D
6mm EVA Foam trailmats – $ 5,20
Hot Glue Gun - $ 5,15
Glue sticks - $ 5,15
Craft Foam 2mm – $1,95/sheet @ 10 sheets $19,50
X-acto Knife with 5 blades - $ 9,75
Ebay Spandex suit with removable arms, feet and mask - $25
Ebay Carbon Fiber Motocycle Gloves Mesh Gloves - $28
Boots
Amazon - Plastic Belt - $15.00
Ebay - Carbon Fiber Vinyl Wrap - $5.00
Cape I haven’t thought about a cape I want to use. Best would be one of Coofunkcurly’s but I sense some evil eyes poking in my back as I’m typing this. So maybe I will try building one myself with help of the many tuts on here. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.
Total costs would be $ 377,75 (pending use of material)
A rough estimate would be $ 400
I got the templates for the armor from Sonjou's thread (thanks a bunch for that!) and made a paper cut-out to judge the size.
I, like others in his thread, also encountered the picture distortion but managed to counteract that by opening the downloaded files in Microsoft office picture manager, where they opened just fine, and then printed them out. In the print menu I unchecked the box “adjust to frame” (hope it’s called that in English) as to keep them from printing outside the paper. Mind the paper settings. Set them to letter. (worked for me)
So after al was printed out I started to assemble it and it looked like this:
Well that was all I could do at the moment because like any starting propbuilder I need some more equipment. I have a cutting mat, an x-acto knive, hot glue gun, some box-cutters, scissors and a printer filled with paper.
The rest will hopefully come around the holidays. think of a hot-knife. And I also needed the essentials: EVA Foam.
So I eventually came across a fellow Dutchman on this site who you all may know as Sjorsjo91 the one from the awesome IM suitcase suit. I asked him where he got his foam from and it so happens he got a very good and cheap option. Just had to remove the aluminium foil which was a breeze. (thanks for the help Sjorsjo!)
On with the build.
I started with the gauntlets. Taped the paper pieces together and drew them on the foam. I want a one piece base so I can glue a piece of 2mm craft foam on bottom of the strap-side which sticks out a bit. On that I will attach some Velcro so they come off easily.
This is where I’m at now:
I have to smooth things out a bit and add some detail to the gauntlet and fins before I can plasti dip them.
I hope I can update this regularly but I have to juggle my time between my son and girlfriend, work and training. So I apologize if this thread isn’t updated as much as you would like but I’m doing my best.
Thanks for reading!
