Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP* Nearly finished pics on page 5...

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

I wouldn't worry too much Markus, if it hasn't happened by now it probably never will.

I handled Simon's VM in person around 5 years back and it was in perfect condition then. But it took a heavy fall and then was recast and mailed around a bit since then.

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

Sorry to hijack this thread, but the above comments made me worry...
I also bought a VMO2 back the days when Vadermaker was still alive and went for the matte Tantive version.

It is absolutely NEW to me, that they went the cheaper route with this paintfinish!!! I never received any warning/ advice/ anything about the risk of sundamage etc. In fact it was advertised as a helmet with automotive paintjob. :confused

What exactly could happen????

Markus

Hi markus ,
It was only cheaper as it was cellulose paint and not 2 pack acrylic. At the time there wasn't a satin 2 pack paint available so they had to go that route .Still automotive paint but not as durable as 2 pack which has a hardener in it as opposed to cellulose which can be affected or softened by heat so dont leave it on the window in the summer basically other than that its fine.

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

As a Favour ? i paid for the materials DH,

the actual truth of the matter is i should have had better tutoring, and if most of the work was done by Ojika then in theory he cut corners didnt he, Great friend great gesture.

Any way i feel very responsible for all this but over the moon with the work thats been done

The corners seem to have been cut in the gelcoating and not the fibreglass, someone else commented on how thin it was , the damage to the helmet is mostly from the fall or whatever trauma it has received, seems obvious really :rolleyes

What are you rolling your eyes at ????

you even said yourself Ojika did most of the work, whatever i did was under Ojikas quidence, so in theory i did as Ojika instructed. So if the fibreglass was laid on to thin the mix of the gelcoat was wrong and the paint was sub standard then corners were cut, seems obvious really :wacko

The fall it took, and the mis handling by the re-caster has resulted in this VM ending up the way it is, but that still doesnt make amends for the way it was built in the first place.
The results here show that the workmanship in the begining was shoddy and as you pointed out Ojika built this as FAVOUR to me because i was his friend BAHHHHHHHH

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

Alright boys, calm down......
If anyone should be shouting about the helmet I think it should be me and I'm not.
Yes I was upset that the helmet is in a worse condition than advertised but although the crack were visible there wasn't any way to tell how bad it really was until it was stripped down.
That said I'm quite enjoying the renovation experience and if anything it might even look better than it was originally, only time will tell.
I have learnt alot about fiberglassing, repairing cracks, stripping paint, sanding, filling and soon finishing the paint work.
So take a chill pill guys and see how this baby turns out.
Thanks. :thumbsup.

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

Sorry mate , just dont like him slagging off the workmanship of a good friend of mine, when its not true .
chill pill no but large whisky does the trick for me :cool

Glad to hear your enjoying the challenge :thumbsup

Thanks Al/ tango´d fett for the clarification...I was indeed a bit worried.

ANYWAY...fact is, that I never received any kind of "warning", as mentioned :unsure

Back on topic:
Can´t wait to see the results of your hard work sskunky!!!

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

I thought I would post a few shots of the dome and face primered up and ready for paint.
The dome needs a light sand and another coat of primer and the filler still shows a bit. The face always looks fat when it is not positioned in the dome...:lol apart from that I think it looks OK????........

Looking good mate.

Now get that sucka painted up.

If you need any grill, I think I've still got a batch of accurate ANH mesh in my junkbox which you can have. LMK if you want it.

There's an area over the (as we look at it) right eye, edge of the dome, which looks like it might need smoothed over. Bit of filler/mililput and it will be good.

Thanks guys!

Yes, I would love some grill if you don't mind, The one in it was rather bent up.

I know the edge of the dome still needs some smoothing out, thanks....

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

Thanks TMG, I've not seen it in it's former glory before....
As far as I'm concerned you can post whatever pics you like. You can never have enough pics of a Vader helmet. :thumbsup

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

Right,
I could do with some advice as to what fixing system I should use? I still have the original system or should I try something else?
I quite like the idea of a magnetic system? Or should I go with a more accurate one?
Any ideas?

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

Thanks Carsten,
after all I suppose this is a restoration....:thumbsup

Re: Damaged VM02 Vader helmet......RESTORATION *WIP*

The early vmo2s had no fixings at all, so technically you could leave it like that, my old one just had velcro to attach the dome and face together
