Custom side-arm Blaster

While I'm waiting on other blaster and saber builds, I thought I'd start a side project. It all started when I was searching for aircraft parts on ebay, inspired by the OT, and ran across this old pneumatic drill. There's tons of them I guess but this one seemed to have cool proportions.

I got it in the mail and studied it for a long time. A friend of mine had asked me something about Boba Fett's blaster and MPPs and the idea of using a flash unit struck me. I've collected a handful of service/Praco/Minicam flash units that are all about 29 mm in diameter. I started sliding them into the "muzzle" of the drill and they all nearly fit. Most of my power tools are broken except for a drill, so I tried to hand-file the diameter of the chuck smaller. That seemed like a fools dream so, impatiently, I started holding the flash and drill over an open flame and (with a ball peen), applying vegetable oil and hammering a minicam flash onto the front. It sort of worked. It seems to be stuck now - I expanded the tip of the flash but there's a gap where the reflector was mounted that sufficiently stopped any more hammering. I left the bulb socket stuck at the end for now...

I've wanted to bolt a scope to this for a long time. While thinking about this, I tried to remove the minicam to try a service flash. No go, it's basically permanently stuck, but I had enough grip that the chuck unscrewed from the body. Whoah.

regretfully I noticed the back of the chuck looked VERY lightsaber/blaster like, but theres no way to affix this barrel backwards realistically. The threading is already there. Thinking like a prop-maker, I put it back.

I'd like to remove this dented metal sleeve as the inside looks pretty western right? But thats on pretty well so far, it ain't coming off, it works like a selector, clicking as I turn it.

The idea of drilling holes in this and tapping them for a scope is not palatable...it's not like a gun frame, there's thick metal and mechanics in there, so on my second try I found the perfect solution! It's coming in the mail, and it's a barrel mounted Weaver (type) base. It fits 30 mm barrels so I'll wrap it around the flash as close as I can to the body. I may mount a long and short scope on this thing, with weaver rings on both (just like the greedo killer) and leave one on the top and one on the right side....pics are being posted

Re: Custom Fett-inspired Blaster

It would appear that "red dot" scopes, sight scopes, pistol scopes and compact scopes yield great results for smaller scopes.

Re: Custom Fett-inspired Blaster

I picked up a pistol scope off the bay and used a set of weaver low rings to clip it on. I may get another barrel mount to support the front - but it feels like an awesome side arm now, holding it!

Re: Custom Fett-inspired Blaster

I had trouble pinning down where I got the first barrel mount, some were 22.5 mm and some were 30 mm which I needed....and then I realized I don't want a second ring around the barrel. I plan on cutting it a little short anyways and finding a flash hider.

Apparently both scope rings fit on one mount, ala Greedo Killer

I finally removed the metal sleeve and I was right - the adjustable bumps on the chuck look very revolver-like. trouble was, the metal sleeve only came off with a lot of hammering. I put this much effort into ripping out a wall once..... anyways it actually smushed the threaded part inside. I tried hammering it back into shape and ended up grinding it out and JB Welding the chuck into place.

I also JB quick-ed the extra flash sync from a Canon flash to the barrel for a second sight. (without the knurled knob at the end) Here's a pic of it plugged into a canon flash, the bottom is curved so it sits flush against the flash..

I've got some pistons im going to install behind it, pics to come.

So, here's what I did today!
First, I JB welded the Canon accessory to the barrel
DSCN3434.jpgDSCN3433.jpgDSCN3432.jpg

I then shortened the barrel (hacksaw and file) and tried to add a Flash Hider. I made this from the rest of the Flash Hider from a real Obi Wan booster, and a piece of a Canon flash reflector. I couldn't reach all the way through and hold the tiny nut I would need to screw on the flash hider. I tried JB Welding a nut in there...didn't work.

So I resorted to pop riveting, using rivets from Roy's kits.
DSCN3446.jpgDSCN3448.jpg

With the Flash hider on tight, I trimmed and super-glued two Revell V8 Pistons to fit on the side Weaver mount, right behind the canon thing. I used a little saw and some needle files to cut down and bevel the back of the piston to sit flush...sort of...then I used apoxie sculpt to keep it from moving and to fill in the gaps.

DSCN3450.jpgDSCN3445.jpg

With the scope on, and the shorter barrel, this really feels like an original trilogy blaster!
I plan on painting most of this black

I had to jb weld the Pistons on instead. My apoxie hardener actually went bad and hardened up so the putty mixture stayed tacky for two days!

stuck on some greeblies....Praco/service knob, weird metal plate from my basement, heiland button and flat headed bolt in the Pistons....and applied primer!

Thanks guys! It's nearly done, and I welcome any input!

I taped off respective parts and hit it with Satin Black, just like my V2 saber.

So, here are some cool details.

Neat holes in the front and back of the original Drill chuck, right underneath some low Weaver rings.

Some of the greeblies I added, including the extra sight and the pistons.

The JB weld was smooth enough I didn't bother sanding it. It was also a tight area, and I was worried about removing too much, causing the pistons to fall off again
There's a flat headed screw and a Heiland push button in the holes.

Here's the Canon sight

Some more cool details, a knurled chuck seen through "vent" holes that served as the flash plug...the bottom of the drill reminiscent of the ROTJ Vader saber...riveted Flash hider from an Obi Wan saber

And some full shots!

I'm very happy this turned out relatively the way I planned, it was a lot of work and creative problem solving.....thank god for rivets!

When I click on the attachment links, I get "Invalid Attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator"

I can see the final 3 pictures and I really like the end result. :thumbsup Looks like something you'd see in someone's holster in Jabba's palace.

Fixed, I attached them manually. The photos are a bit jumbled, but take a look everyone! Adding the rest here. The site does tend to do that....you use the picture button to attach a photo, and it uploads and shows in the word box but then never completes itself.

That's exactly what I was going for! Grungy, fett/smuggler pistol, not the satin black shiny metal style of ROTJ
