Cricut Vs. Silhouette

Hey all. I have looked through the recent threads on the topic of Cricut Vs. Silhouette but was wondering if anyone in the group has any recent experience with these platforms. I am looking at getting one in the next week or so and wanted to see what everyone recommends. I know the silhouette has some freedom that the Cricut doesn't have and the Cricut might cut square corners a little better but not sure about other stuff?! I will be using it to cut/score styrene, make paint masks and possibly cut vinyl for small signs, etc.. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

In my area, the local stores (Target, Walmart, Michaels, etc) have a lot more Cricut supplies than Silhouette. I have gone out for supplies a few times, not wanting to wait for Amazon!

Siser Juliette, if you need precision cutting, don't plan on the embossing tools, and do your designs in other software.

Cricut angered a lot of people (myself included) by going subscription-only a while back, and only grandfathered in us existing users after a lot of community anger at the announcement. They went full Sonos. Never go full Sonos. They charge a monthly fee and the software is actively getting worse. Cricut has some good materials that are great in a pinch (if pricey for consistent use), but they can also be used on other machines.

For clarity, the monthly fee is only to access their library of art, not to simply use the software. I'm a new user of Cricut in the last 3 months, and still not paying the subscription.

It is annoying that the software keeps trying to sell it to me, though.

Good information. The popularity of the Cricut is a definite selling point.

Follow up question if I may... Do you know if the Juliet do ok with scoring styrene?

I haven't used it for styrene, but they have an etching tool, so I assume so. Full transparency: I have a maker 3 I use for etching metal/cutting soft woods (for one off routing templates) because I'd rather have the wear on tear on that. it's all I use it for now that I have the other. I know they'll both do materials a few mm thick.

I pulled the trigger on a Cameo Silhouette 4 last night. They were going for 100$ off regular price (199$). I'm assuming they're trying to get rid of that stock since the 5 is out. Thank you all for your responses. It was hard to beat the price! I'll let you all know how it works out.

Just ordered the 4 Pro myself. I've been itching to get one of these and your thread put it top of mind again. Time to finally pull the trigger.

Stupid noob question: What are people here using these cutters for?
Not a dumb question at all! I will personally be using mine for doing some precision cutting of styrene sheet for my scratch building and cutting out paint masks, of numbers and symbols, for those same builds.

If this actually works on styrene as thick as .04"(1mm)... that would be a first for me. I've been waiting to hear about that
capability from all these types of machines, and never seem to get a solid, honest answer about it.

Hey Carl... I did some .5x8.5 inch .030 strips as a test last night. It did pretty good. That was my very first cut on the new machine, so I definitely have a lot to learn about the nuance of the cutting, etc.. but if the first test cuts are any indication, it should work out pretty well. I'll keep you updated when I do some more intricate stuff. I am going to try and use it for small windows on my current build. Crossing fingers :)

I've been think about investing in one of these to make custom masks. Those of you that have one, how small of a mask can you cut? Can it do a circle smaller than 1mm?

I don't have an answer yet for something that small but if I get some paint masks going, I'll post any results.

As others have stated, paint masks. I designed this one in Adobe Illustrator for my SS X-Wing, and cut it out on the Cricut 3 with a low-tack vinyl.
