Crackle paint effect? Sonic Screwdriver, Clockwork Masks

Sanded the sonic screwdriver toy body smooth adn applied the crackle effect, not entirely accurate on the size of the cracks, its hard to get right, but I think its a huge improvement from what the toy was.

very cool.

my suggestion was going to be to look for contact paper or shelf paper that has that pattern. ive seen it in a few places (or something close to it).

the painting turned out great.

Very nice. There is someone on The Trek Prop Zone working on metal replacement parts for the toy. That combined with the new paint job should result in a mighty fine sonic.

I'll tell you what, I'll send you mine so that you can take pics along the way and do a tutorial. :lol

lol, sure. Wow, metal parts would be awsome, yeah they are totally separate so definetly doable for someone that can do metal.

Would the metal parts be correcting for the extra inch or so in length the toy has? I know several people who have shortened the base just to make it more accurate...

and the fact that the bottom piece should not have the toothed grooves where it comes apart.

I think he's planning on making straight replacement parts. The size is now accurate to the season two screwdriver. I was not aware that the lower grooves were not accurate.

Spoiler alert

It will all be a mute point when the screwdriver gets destroyed this season anyway... :p

Admittedly, it is not at all bad. It looks better than the newest sonic screwdriver version by CO. It is gray and crackled but that looks better.

check out the pics on the first page, you can see there should not be grooves in the metal parts on the bottom

Actually the Season 2 Screwdriver is still shorter than the toy. If you compare straight on you can see that its not teh same dimentions at all.

I know there was that report that they bought the molds, but I do not think they used them aside from comparison. Even how the head moves up and down is different.

As for getting destroyed, he's rebuilt it before and more than likely will gain and will look the same ;)

I'm thinking it will look completely different. That way CO makes ANOTHER replica/toy that we all flock to get. I think it's called 'marketing'. The same reason that the Doctor wears a blue suit this year. CO breaks out the moulds, makes more figures, paints the suit blue......
More money for them and the BBC.

Got it. Never looked that close before. Now I HAVE to get some metal on this thing.

The doctor is still wearing his brown suit though this year its not a full switch, just variation, Tom Baker had how many outfits? And its not all about marketing, how pessismistic is that. They changed him blue to match and compliment the Reds of his new companion thats it.

The general talk on the websites Doctor Who related is that it will simply be reborn in a very similar design.

Superb job, dude. Nice finish. I see you didn't add the not very Gallifreyan flat-head screw to the body. :D

I wonder if that 'Bare Metal Foil' for auto modelling might work for the metal parts?

From what I've gathered, the CO Sonic is about 1" too long, and the Westco Sonic flashlight / torch about 1" too short. A happy medium (Ah ha.) would be somewhere around 6".

BTW: Anyone tried fitting the guts of a CO sonic into one of the torches? The circuit & battery part of the CO does seem awfully small.

Here's a sneak (SPOILERY) peek from the 'Insiders' Guide to Doctor Who' book of the sonic damage:

From the same book, the original design (with measurements):

Again, nice work, Kylash.

Im confused how exactly do you get the cracking effect on a paint job ?

Im Sorry I just dont understand this would be great for a project I have in mind.

Do they sell the Anitas Fragile Crackle at Michaels or any other brick and mortar store? Or do you have to order it from that site?

Thanks

Which version of the sonic did you use? Most of the newer ones from CO have cracking in the handles. Has anyone tried one of those sonics?

Crackle paint tastes................FUNNY. :p
I want metal replacement parts. That with the nice crack-paint should make for one nice sonic.
