Couple questions about The Bourne Identity

So last night I saw the Bourne Identity, and it's a great film. Lots of action, suspense, mystery. The I thought up a couple questions.

1. How does Bourne lose his identity? It wasn't very clear to me in the film.
2. When Bourne is shooting at the sniper at the house in the countryside, what exactly exploded? Didn't make much sense to me. At first I thought it was the car, but then it seemed too big of an explosion. Any explanations?

been a while since i seen it but the explosion i think was from a gas tank and as for his identity loss, more detail about how is explained in the next one(s). Afterall its part of a trilogy not counting in Jeremy renner's bourne ofc.

He had a melt down and his brain shut down due to him realizing, after seeing the kid on the boat, that what he was doing was wrong. The explosion was a large tank. The brother lived out in the country so it was probably some type of oil or propane tank used to fuel the house.

Thank you for the answers. The part about Bourne losing his memory was sort of explained in the bonus features, but it wasn't too clear to me. As for the explosion, I didn't remember seeing a tank.

From the Bourne wiki:
Film: Professor - The Bourne Directory

'Once everyone has taken cover in the basement, Bourne proceeds to confront the assassin. Using a double-barreled shotgun to blow up the home's fuel tank to provide cover, he moves from open ground into the woods to pursue the sniper. '
