*Contest* - Custom Sonic Screwdriver

I was wondering, can we post pictures of the failure or additional sonics that DIDN'T make our personal cut?

Cause the first one I started was a bit of a 9th/10th variation and since it's not really original enough, I never quite finished it yet -no electronics or lights - but it is still kinda shaping up. It's WAY to big, even bigger than it needed to be, but I was learning how to use the tools I had at hand in a re-purposed way shall we say.

Might be a nice way to pass the time for the real entrants to be judged so we have stuff to share while we pass the time. I can't believe that I will do anything but come in dead last from all the great work I see, but as poorly as I'm doing with a drill and dremel I'd still like feedback and tips and you know, the fun of seeing what else everyone did besides their "real" main entries.

Would that breach the rules?

I don't know... I think it might give away which one is yours by virtue of similar pics or surroundings or style. Personally I wouldn't but I don't think it breaks any rules. :)

Well I just took shots of my two builds, my official one and my failed one and they are with different backgrounds.

I'd say hold off on posting them until after the contest is judged, then post away.

In the end I wasn't able to use my lathe, the whole thing was done with a dremel and hand files. Although it doesn't look half bad considering, if I do say so myself.

As for the deadline, it's midnight at the END of April 15, correct? There's one last finishing touch I want to put on my sonic, but I need something from work to do it and I don't have work until the 15th. I'd get home around 8 or 9 PM Pacific time and take pics as fast as I can. Will this be acceptable?

The end of April 15, I am not going to be a horses arse about time zones. I am expecting my customsonic email address to blowup on that day. My plan is to get everything ready to post on the 16th.

I just thought it would give us something to talk about and look at while we waited. At this point winning is pretty much way secondary or tenthondary (can I make that a word?) as I wasn't too happy with how what I was able to make didn't match what was in my imagination alas.

After I had was about halfway I started looking around the RPF and TARDISBUILDERS site for inspiration and the level of detail in other custom sonic builds. I now feel like a 2nd grader competing with Olympians. Oh well.

My pictures are away!

I think I may have sent my picture too big. Saving to my email inbox failed though it said the email sent successfully. Can you confirm you got my entry email "elvisgump". I just resized them down in Photoshop and can resend them again.

Any ruling on posting pics of our 'also ran' entries if we made more than one before the judging is done?

At the end of the day it is what it is. I scaled back a lot of my original ideas and plans because y'know what? I don't have a workshop... heck I don't even have a place to reliably use a dremel without getting noise complaints from neighbours. But I have a Sonic Screwdriver that is of my own design. If I attend the Gallifrey convention next year (i've taken the past 3 years off) I might take a costume: Trevor Martin's Doctor. And it'll be cool because I'll have a non-canon 'driver for a non-canon Doctor.

I'm glad I did this, not only am I glad I did it, but I'm glad I completed and got it on time after I failed at the starting blocks on the Custom Lightsaber comp'.

This was never about winning for me, but I reserve the right to feel like a second grader when everyone elses efforts are posted... :lol

My photo's are sent....I think! It took me a few attempts to get them through too, I hope they arrived ok!?

As everyone is saying, Thank you TND for setting this up, it's been great!

Elvisgump... Don't be so hard on yourself man! That's why we are here, to have fun and improve our craft.
Ability doesn't ALWAYS trump design.
The only way to improve is to do!

I thought Yoda said it was "do or do not, there is no try"... :lol

I don't have a good workshop area so my little spot was out on an old table in my carport. Thankfully since I live in the country there's no one to complain about the dremeling and running the drill as a makeshift lathe; which I only used about five minutes on my actual entry.

For my failed 9th/10th variation I went thru a TON of pieces of 1/2 PVC pipe trying to lathe them using some 30 year old linoleum printing block carving tools I still have from the first year I was in college. I wasted a lot of times before I realized only one entry and it needed to be more original than that. I'm terrible at reading instructions...

That's why I thought I'd post it because it really won't give you any ideas but the core one I had to build a sonic with a refillable pen inside. Otherwise it's radically different from my actual entry. Except like most they are gonna be a vaguely phallic shaped doo-dad.

I accomplished that, but now it's way too big, like the 2005-2009 sonic on steroids. I forgot the emiitter head was actually the same diameter as the main body with the four struts so the emitter looks enormous even though it's just the struts that add to the 'diameter'.

The extending acrylic neck which is just an old clear hard plastic tube for Radio Shack solder. I still haven't gotten the part assembled with a 2nd slider that lets me click down the mini gel pen inside. I should have looked harder for a twisty ended ink pen I think. It's just a work in progress, not crackled or aged but you can imagine the eventual end result because it just needs that and the electronics.

^^^great idea... assuming the good doctor has the time... i can see myself worrying that my pics, which should be done tonight finally, did or did not make it.

And just to be sure... the deadline is not 15 hours from now, but will be 39 hours from now correct? We're talking when April 15th ends and the 16th begins correct?

It says the contest is from March 1st to midnight April 15th, so I would assume that means that 11:59pm on the 15th is the last time to send in pics.

Correct me if I'm wrong?

Yep, end of the 15th so you have a full day left. I'll be taking my photos tonight and sending them tomorrow morning. :D
