Complete Mad Max costume FINISHED - Sunglasses found

Master Member
Hi all,
Finally got the last bit for the Mad Max costume and its now finished.
The sunglasses have never been identified but there are many Carrera styles that look similar.
An original Bonds baby blue raglan t shirt was used in the movie and proved the hardest piece to find since
they havnt been made for years but managed to find a very tight small size.

The belt is a vintage UK police belt and is the closest ive been able to find, the police baton is a vintage UK
baton so its not a stretch that they also used the British belt.
The gloves are from ebay and are exact replicas from the movie.
The jacket and pants are from South Beach leather and are specifically designed for the MFP cut.
No pockets on the front or back of the pants. I had to remove the rivited supplied shoulder caps as they
were not very accurate. Instead of using rivots this time, i used velcro and it seems to work well.

I was incredibly lucky to come into posession of an original pair of
Rossiter boots that are the same boots worn by Max and the MFP. These boots are extremely rare and were
listed for auction as a pair of WW2 aviatin boots. They are even my size.

The accessories Max carries proved very hard to come across with our tough gun laws but it worked out
faily well as i got a suitable toy 357 that has the exact grip and markings as Max`s and ended up
scratch building a sawn off shotgun replica very close to the original.

The shotgun holster is from a fan site and very well made, as were the shoulder caps and Gerber knive.
The hand gun holster in the movie was a bianci Long with the clamp closer, mine is a Medium with the same clamp,
similar to Deckards. The three link cuffs and plastic baton come from ebay UK The pins and badges are replicas
made by Abbyshot and are great quality.

Very happy with the end result and he certainly makes an impression in any room he gets put in. A very big thankyou
to Jared, Karol and MFP 2020 at madmaxmovies.com for all their help in getting this together.

I know the Gerber is not part of the MM1 costume (MM2) but i think it gives the best bad ass costume one more fang.

Re: Complete mad max costume

A really outstanding costume nicely presented...!
Put it in a nice clean well-lit space with a signed 10x8 and it will be perfect..!

Re: Complete mad max costume

Fantastic costume. I'm very jealous of the Rossiter boots, been looking for a pair for ages. Which site did you get the shotgun holster from?

Re: Complete mad max costume

Excellent work! I think that belt buckle is just what Max Replica and I have been looking for. I'll have to keep my eye out for one (or more). What's the width?

The Bonds T-shirt remains elusive.

Magpie9, Rossiters boots come up every so often on eBay.com.au. (Last month there was a gorgeous pair that laced up the back. Too bad I have clown feet and gorilla calves.) Magnolia Leather Works on Etsy.com has made shotgun holsters for some of us. There's only a listing for the MM2-style holster, but I'm sure he's still making them.

Thanks MFP, I've just ordered one of his Holsters. Looking forward to seeing progress on your Plissken costume if you start it.

Re: Complete mad max costume

Great presentation of a great costume. I only have a few tips and corrections:

1. You mention that the holster in the movie is a bianchi long. I don't think this is correct. I think you got this information from me but what I actually said was that the bianchi in this style is a good match for the movie holster. I don't think it's exact. And I actually think the long size is too long so it's probably good that you're using a shorter one.

2. Your shoulder holster looks like it's hanging a little low based on where the strap is across the back. You may want to just raise it up a bit.

3. To get very technical, the baton and the shotgun are never worn at the same time in the movie. So you need to choose one or the other if you want to stay "screen accurate". But then again, I like to wear mine both at the same time as well. I just like it. I just move the baton over to the other side as I find it swings into the shotgun too much when I walk otherwise.

4. You need to remove the one strip of foam on the back of the thumbs for those particular gloves to be movie accurate. I had to do the same thing on mine. Just carefully cut the stitching and it will come off. It leaves tiny little holes but it's not very noticeable.

5. That belt buckle does look like the closest one I've seen, but I suspect that the belt may be just a bit too skinny. Is it around 1 or 1 1/2"? I don't know for sure, but from screenshots it looks like Max's is around 1 3/4".

6. Were you the one that drilled out the middle part of a pair of plastic sunglasses and painted them? If so, they really look like they came out pretty good.

7. As for the knife, you can consider this Mad Max 1.5, maybe he's already killed the toecutter's gang and has picked up a knife on his way out to the wasteland to begin his MM2 journey.

8. Magnolia Leatherworks does still make the MM1 shotgun holster (as well as an MM2 version. If you don't see them on their site (they're on Etsy as well as having their own site) just send them an email and say you want one. I've been working with him on having a screen accurate MM1 revolver holster made, so hopefully that will happen sometime this year. (They are located in Georgia and are not to be confused with Magnoli Clothiers, who are well known to the RPF as makers of leather goods and clothing.)

9. Maybe you should cross post this costume at the madmaxforum?

10. Congratulations on making one of the only really complete Mad Max film one costumes out there!

Re: Complete mad max costume

Very nice. I always wanted to have one of these costumes. Of course, with my build and look, I'd end up looking more like his sergeant "Fifi" than "Max". :lol

Re: Complete mad max costume

Thanks for the comments guys.

I got the t shirt by gum shoeing the local charity shops until one came up.
Will keep an eye out for you MFP 2020. I bid on Jareds auction a while back but missed out.

Thanks for the feedback and tips Jared. You guys have sharp eyes, the belt is actually 5mm thinner than the typical Garrison belt.
The buckle is nearly identicle to the original , just a fraction smaller. I think the rivots i used in the shoulder caps may be a little large, what do you think?

The only thing i would change in the future would be the baton, hopefully
some of our English pals can help out with some. At the very least, i could get the handle replicated by an old carpenter with a lathe.

Re: Complete mad max costume

On second look, the rivets do look a tiny bit large. And is there a little hole or something in the middle of each one? Hard to see but they don't look like standard rivets to me. There is a good closeup pic of Max's shoulder cap on Karol's site if you want a reference for size.

I didn't notice until I read your writeup a second time that you said your baton was plastic. It looks pretty good. My wooden one looks nearly the same. (And it came with a flat end like that but I sanded it to be more rounded.) I wouldn't mind swapping mine out for a vintage one with an accurate handle someday.

If that belt is only 5mm thinner than 1 3/4" then it's closer than I thought. I'd say that's close enough to correct. Maybe I'll be looking for one of those belts because you're right about the buckle being the closest I've seen to the original.

Re: Complete mad max costume

Fantastic looking suit you put together there! I made a Road warrior Shoulder pad for a friend once.

Re: Complete mad max costume

The rivots with the small hole are called Pop rivots Jared, im sure they are the same ones used on the original costumes, will try and find a good picture.
If anyone has a HD capture it would be great.

I think i have to use smaller rivots though, do you still have any shoulder caps for sale? I will need new ones. Think i will put these ones on an old dinner jacket.

Thanks TJDFett, any pictures of your shoulder pad?
The person who posted before you makes a wicked, 100% authentic one, you should check it out.

Ah, pop rivets. I am very familiar with those, and yes, that explains the little holes. But no, I do not think those were used on the original movie jackets. It doesn't look to me like the rivets have a hole in the middle and they look more like the standard hammered-in type round top rivets (some of them also look a bit uneven to me, as if they were hammered by hand and not applied by a machine).

I don't have anymore shouldercaps available unfortunately, and have no plans to make any. A few people have talked about doing a run of these at one point or another but I don't think it's ever happened. I for one would like to see it happen as there are a lot of people who want to create MFP jackets or upgrade their existing SouthBeachLeather MFP jackets.

If you ever do make a dinner jacket with shoulder caps I would very much like to see it.

Re: Complete mad max costume

I know its not the best way to secure the caps, as seen in the 3rd picture, but there you go.

Thats why i got velcro stitched to the jacket and glued to the caps, pop riveted just the caps beforehand.
I just have to paint around the trim of my rivets to get them the correct size and i guess all you need is a dab in each of yours, at last, a cheap mod.

Re: Complete mad max costume

A detail that a lot of people miss, if you're going for screen accuracy:

One of the shoulder pads on Max's jacket has deliberate hatch marks on it, as if he has been counting something off- presumably how many people he's killed. I forget which shoulder pad it is, but you can see it when he hits the ground after being shot in the leg, so look carefully. The number is over five IIRC

That's my favourite little 'spot' along with the picture of his wife and kid stuck in the middle of the steering wheel in the black Interceptor- that one I take as proof that he's not really 'mad'; it's a constant reminder of why he HAS to kill them all. That along with the fact that he's visibly struggling to set up Johnny the Boy's death.

Re: Complete mad max costume

Well spotted , I actually picked that up finding the rivet pics. Also got me wondering the origins. Theres also another pic of The Goose`s helmet guard
with markings on it, probably prop dept markings though.

You might enjoy this pic, Im putting together a display of BoBs dashboard using original parts with the steering wheel as the centerpiece,
Its progressed a bit since this pic.

Damn! I can't believe I didn't know about the pop rivets on the shoulder caps! That's what happens when you don't have access to and HD version of the first movie I guess. Thanks for those clear screen shots. I'll be redoing mine with pop rivets at some point. Luckily my expertise is really with the MM2 outfit or I'd be extra embarrassed right now. : )

And that pic of the shoulder cap flying loose may have also had something to do with the cheap vinyl material not holding as well as real leather.

And yes, those tally marks have been much talked about and much debated.

(PS, I'll be looking for some pop rivets in the correct size. Let me know if you want some when I get them. Then again, maybe I'll try just using an awl to punch a little hole in each of mine and see how that looks. But I'll probably redo it all with the real thing. Obsession is the name of the game here)

Re: Complete mad max costume

Pop rivets...holes...the AbbyShot jacket has smooth-headed rivets. That means...I'm not SA!!! :eek

I wonder if I could drill some indentations in...

Re: Complete mad max costume

Thanks mothmonty.
Try a center punch and hammer to make the hole and then just use a dab of paint boys, it might save replacing all those rivets.
