CLONE WARS weekly discussion thread

For feature film release the distribution model will be theater, physical media as well as digital rental, and then on to Netflix.

Understood. But...

We were talking about a theoretical situation in which Disney offers SW materials such a movie like Mulan 2. In that case. Disc, then to streaming. Just like a process after a a theatrical release. The core of this particular discussion is based on Solo4114's comment where he believes that instead of such a movie being offered on disc first, it might be offered first on Netflix the same way that Season 6 did.

Oh, I see, yes they would look to initially monetize that release with physical media/digital rental. The CW "Season" 6 was a unique situation. I use the quotation marks I intentionally, this was only 13 episodes they were allowed to complete post merger. A complete Season 1-5 disc set had already been released. I would suggest there was little to gain by incurring the cost of creating and marketing a Season 6 DVD release. It would have sold poorly, IMO. Better to release it as part of their deal with Netflix and collect that incremental revenue while the series was still fresh in people's minds.

Wait, I think you misunderstood what I was talking about. I was referring to a future Season 7 or beyond in Clone Wars. If Netflix has the streaming rights, my point was they didn't just buy the streaming rights for what exists plus Season 6 (since they made this deal probably before Season 6 was done) -- they bought all future Clone Wars stuff, and probably other TV animated ventures in the Star Wars universe as well.

ah, ok. Yes, a new season on Netflix would be great, I just think it is way too much to hope for. I think chances are low that we ever see any sort of continuation. I just think it would be more realistic for Disney to commit resources in short amounts of time creating a disc movie (the 3 or 4 episodes of a story arc) over the span of many years with the option of stopping at any time than to commit the continuous span of time it requires to do an entire season. Just my logical thought process based on absolutely zero knowledge of Disney or any type of movie/tv production experience.

Oh, I agree with you that it's unlikely we'll see more Clone Wars, either as a regular series, or as one-off films a la The Little Mermaid 2. I just was saying that, if we did, it'd likely be on Netflix first. What might happen is some reference back to some of the material that was planned for the future in Rebels. Like, some way to tie the two series together with some of the characters.

Between prohibitive productions costs and the fact that most if the CW creative team is committed to another series, I think it's safe to assume it is done and dusted.

That'd make sense, yeah. I'm really just getting started with Season 1 (the Malevolence JUST got destroyed a few episodes ago), so I don't know how much was left feeling unresolved with the CW show, or how much is available to use in Rebels, but I suppose it's possible they could retool certain story elements from the prior series to use in the new one. Unless there are legal issues and/or it wouldn't work from a narrative perspective, that would make sense to save some effort.

True, but you pretty much sort of included those obstacles in my original comment:

Of course I'm hoping that in a year or two when they get all their plans heading where they want to go and they determine the resources exist to venture out to new options... I'd like to see the remaining stories told via direct to disc movies. It's a pipe dream I know.
