Is there a way {program, add-on etc} to have a RPF chat room for those who are on-line at the same time?

also: What do you think of the idea?

{Or is there already one and I am just missing the link?}

There isn't, but we are currently looking at this option which will integrate into the forum software... Just need to do some testing and round up the $$$. It isn't cheap but it seems to be one of the better chat platforms that seamlessly integrates with vBulletin 3 and 4.

I'll help in any way I can, the RPF Dino that I am! :lol

Does the RPF have a PayPal acct? One that could be used to collect donations - with full transparency on how the funds are finally spent, of course.

We don't take donations any longer but rely on our ads to cover costs. We appreciate your willingness to donate though! Just bear with us a bit and as soon as we have some $$$ and verify everything functions we will see about getting the chat room in place!

No Worries! Just an oldster here trying to get back inna RPF saddle after a looooooong hiatus.

Again, Thanks for stabilizing this great Proppers home! It is fun to be here again.

Art you might want to look into IRC, it will remove the strain and additional load to the forums server... And IMO IRC is still one of the best chat engines out there, it has stood and continues to stand the test of time...

I'm too lazy to see how well this actually integrates with the forum, but the quick once over seems to suggest it does integrate pretty well...

IMO irc is too much hassle, requires external programs, relies on others' servers, and people can get off on power trips/takeovers/floods/etc. More work for the mods, and you'd have to have ops online all the time to manage it (more staff!). I know if it was completely separate I would never check it.

I'm on one forum (scubaboard.com) where they have a dedicated chat room built in and it's really nice, doesnt require leaving the site or anything. Users are linked to their profiles on the board, etc. This would be the way to go. I'm on another forum that uses a shoutbox which I find useful sometimes, annoying other times, and if you do this please for the love of everything that is holy put the shoutbox at the bottom not the top.

We are looking into IRC as well as the link I posted previously. We can test the first one for 30 days I believe. We might just run a test and see how it goes... See what issues we run into... and then go from there.

There are pros and cons to every chat interface, and my suggestion is not 'completely separate' it integrates with the site... The IRC network has stood the test of time because it works and it works well as a chatting system, is it perfect no, but none are...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a vB 3.8.5 site, no? Why not use one of the fine, free, fully integrated chatboxes offered by the community at the support sites? No external scripts required. Most of them take less than 3 minutes to install.

I've had a lot of luck with a particular model. It can be used as a separate page chat, added to forumhome, or even every page if you'd like (I'd neer suggest such foolishness, of course). Usergroup permissions can be set as well.

Just an idea. If there is an interest, let me know. I'll PM the details to the Admin.

OM, can you give me a link for what you are talking about specifically? I am not familiar with any chat software that is a part of vB.

Necro posting, but I decided to post here!

As there been any follow ups regarding this? Was giving it some thougt. I think the availability of a live chat here will significantly improve the community's ability to "connect."

It kinda sucks to be on the forums all day, but would rather have a live chat to have a real proper discussion on certain things, instead of countless threads. IDK, I read about what program you are looking at and thats a bit of money to drop. I hope the adverts can help?

Live Chat

I think a live chat would be great for this site =]

it would allow members to get together and get quick questions answered as well as conversing more and expanding the ways to reach out in the community.

Is this a possibility for theRPF?

I'm seeing a "Chat Room [1]" in the menu bar at the moment, but when I click on it I'm taken to an essentially blank screen. Is that just me and my work firewall, or should something else be happening? :confused

More than likely the chat room will probably be fully operational tonight is my bet which the RPF members will probably end up overloading it. So who's bringing the chips and drinks?
