Catching Fire Arena Bow Replica

pretty exciting update today. Both straps and the main tube for the quiver are made.

I took the rear carbon wrap off because it was peeling at the tips, and I will re-apply it prior to heatshrinking the tips of the bow. My replacement bowstring still isn't here (and I'll be contacting the company first thing in the morning to see what the holdup is) so I'm still not at the exact drawn length that it should be. The only thing I'm really waiting on with the quiver is to see if my sister can figure out a good way to actually sew the bottom closed in the correct shape (obviously with an extra piece of fabric as the "floor") and that will determine how much of the top gets cut off and how much gets folded, plus that will determine my strap placement. I'm sticking with 25" (thought the prop was around 22") to make up for the longer arrows that are actually usable, and I'll be re-fletching the problematic arrows soon as well. Still have to clean off the excess glue with a scotchbrite pad as well.

if it isn't apparent from the pictures, the quiver is spot on with the manufacturing process in the movie. It looks a little scrunched at the bottom when it's sitting by itself, but when actually in use, it falls just right. if I have to, I can roll up some thin plastic inside to help hold the shape, but I won't really know until I have the bottom aluminum strip finalized and the straps attached.

Hi I am a big fan of all your prop making work. I am interested in finding out more about this prop. Is there a way I could contact you about it?

Haven't had the time to take really good pictures yet, but I got the video taken. Also, since the video, my waist belt clip has arrived. It's exactly what they used. I still have to have my arrows cut to length and cover the top of the quiver with wood. Otherwise, this is wrapped up.

Hey buddy amazing job with bow and great job with telling us what work was done to it. You should really consider selling add-on piece on shapeways.

Now that the blu-ray is out, and the "making of" states that the finish on the riser is "black chrome" (aka. hyper black), are you going to send yours out for powder coat (or do it yourself if you have the means)? It's a pretty common finish in most aftermarket wheels.

How much would a quiver be but for arrows that are 31" not as long as yours

Also can you do an updated video with the belt on quiver and one of you shooting the bow

I had totally missed that. I could easily do it myself but I'm not sure the riser will fit in my powdercoating oven. I'd have to totally buff it smooth prior to powdercoating though as that is a transparent color so for it to look right, it has to be totally smooth underneath. That said, there are 100 shades of black chrome, and it looks like the one in the movie is very light.

I'm not sure if I'll ever do a video of me shooting the bow (I am not an expert at archery and don't really feel like having my form critiqued by every single person who shoots competitively) but I hope to take an updated video soon. I have one last tweak to make to the quiver and then I can take the video, but it won't be for at least a couple of weeks.

Currently I am not selling standalone quivers.

I am looking into having a small batch of quiver bodies made (which I would then finish up with the metal and woodwork as well as assembly) but I have absolutely no timeline on that and no estimated price either. If I do end up having some made (and the already interested parties don't snatch up the whole batch) I'll be sure to post them in the junkyard.

Great build!
Where did you end up sourcing your:
Nocks
Bezels
Vanes/Fletching
Metal Trimmings
Material for the quiver strap
Thanks

I may once I see sufficient source material to determine what kind of a bow it is. I had initially thought that they were using the buffalo for the last 3 movies (though I assumed it would be different in mockingjay) but after watchin the trailer, I'm almost sure it's a different bow. Hopefully the base bow is less expensive this time. :D

Yes hopefully. also in an interview J-Law stated the bow was custom

She said that about the last movie too. I mean, it is custom when you think about it. People go on my youtube channel and try to make it look like I am stupid by saying "anyone can buy the hoyt buffalo with no needed modifications for $800 and that's the accurate bow" when really, they have no idea just how custom the bow is.

Yea I get what your saying and it really is technically custom if they really thought about it. But can you keep me posted if you make it also are you still going to make a shooting video

I may. I still haven't put the quiver fully together. I lost a rivet on the lower belt strap, and I have the stuff to put it back together (was missing a washer initially) but I just haven't had time.

I pulled up some stills of the mockingjay bow. It looks VERY simple compared to the buffalo. I'm gonna spend a few minutes searching through to see if I can find a matching bow, and if I do, I'll be sure to post here. I still see heatshrink on one end of it. I assume they have to do that since the bow has such a weak draw that the string will fall off during running scenes or something. Arrows look to be the same with different vanes and different color nocks. Not sure I have it in me to make another quiver, but if I can do the bow reasonably, I will.

Okay cool also the arrows are with the black nocks are the same east on arrows but the ones with the red and yellow are different because the nocks are glue on clear nocks with the bezel painted yellow or red
