I looked through the
Making of Empire book last night and found that same picture. Don't know what the part is. Since the AT-AT is in an early stage, it may be too early for some of these far background models......
COCKPIT #1 -
The cockpit canopy was simple - the cockpit canopy from the DV TIE kit. I mounted it to a trimmed down piece from the SatV kit (the adapter ring the third stage LEM panels mount to) -
The TIE Bomber used a Plastruct hemisphere - this is more of a cone shape. (The simple reason being I didn't have any hemispheres the right size in inventory at the time.) I trimmed down one of the interior pieces to add some detail behind the frame.
Further behind that, I trimmed down another part from the DV TIE to serve as the back wall -
This leaves virtually no room for a pilot figure, but it does add just enough depth to the cockpit that it doesn't look flat.....
COCKPIT #2 -
For the other body tube, I wanted something that looked like a hatch - something that would open when the thing lands. For that I cut out a section off of the bottom of the DVD TIE kit and attached that to another adapter ring -
Since I didn't have to trim the SatV adapter ring to accept the hatch part, it is a little longer than the cockpit assembly and will stick out more. It think this will add a nice asymmetry to the combined unit -
MOUNT POINT -
The "engine" block thing between the two tubes was made up from a bunch of Plastruct I beams. I used Weld-On for the glue so it would all be nice and strong since it will be bearing the load. I drilled a hole for a mount as well -
Since these are attaching to tubes, I took a piece of acrylic stock the same diameter and wrapped some sandpaper around it and used it as a sanding drum in order to bevel the edges of the Plastruct parts.
I just made the the mount as long as the space between the two ribbed sections -
I'll do the wing attach points tonight..........
