CA glue & Primer

I as trying to glue on some strips of styrene to a primered (filler primer) surface and for some reason, the glue wouldn't bite. It just seemed to "melt" the primer where it touched it.

Do I need to coat it with something first or is there a better glue to use?

your trying to glue a to a surface that has primer on it? If so, remove the primer from the surface the glue will make contact with. Bare surface and glue, no paints, no primers.

For styrene-styrene, you'll be much better off using a solvent-type of glue, rather than CA. Look at either Ambroid pro-weld or Tamiya liquid glue. They actually melt the styrene allowing the two pieces become one physical piece.

CA has good pull strength, but almost no shear strength. One good whack from the side and it'll come right apart.

But if you want to just use the CA, just scrape off the primer where the two parts meet.

Somtimes I just cut up some styrene and por a little acetone on until it turns into a paste. Works really well; just do not over do it or it will warp things up a bit.

Hey Fred, what's the best glue for resin to resin?

FB

CA and or epoxy.
pinning the item helps as well.

When I assemble figures (garage kits) After I sand the area I scribe the attachment points so the glue has something to bite.

Using 60-100 grit sand paper will work as well.

D6 is correct.

Resin is porous enough that the CA can actually work it's way in there and form a pretty decent bond (which is why crazy glue is great for gluing the handle back on your coffee mug). Not to say that a whack from the side won't dislodge it, but it's better than tube glue or other options.

I also like 5 minute, 2 part epoxy, but it works in a completely different way. It really doesn't bond to much, but itself. You can mix some up and put it on something, but then a few hours later, peel it off (with some effort). But the reason I like it for resin is because it has good pull and shear strength, so I use it for larger pieces.

Small resin bits to larger resin bits - CA

PE bits to resin - CA

Large resin to large resin - 5 minute epoxy

styrene to resin - 5 minute epoxy

styrene/ABS to styrene/ABS - solvent glue
