Building My Hero I Robot Pistol

A little background on this project in the interest of full disclosure.

I picked up a kit years ago for one of these that I was told came from a casting of a hero. Honestly however the casting was not that good, and once I found the revolver to go inside things went from bad to worse. I discovered that whoever did it had over sanded the parts by almost 1/8 of an inch so the revolver wouldn't even fit inside without a huge gap all around where the 2 halves should come together, and one side of the upper half for some reason was over 1/16 longer than the other side so they didn't mate together well at all. The 2 disks on the above the handle were not mirrored like they should be. They were just 2 copies of one side. Also all the nuts, and screws were left in for casting so real ones could not be simply added.

The story ended at that point for awhile. I waited for a few years to see if a better casting would surface so I could finish my build. I finally decided I had to take matters into my own hands.

I took the parts, and started by adding material to close the gap in the seam, I recreated the keys that had been sanded off in the upper half, and with some cutting, adding got the 2 halves to the same length so they would mate properly. I also ground out the cast nuts, and re-created 6 sided holes for real nuts to sit in. I scratch built a mirrored set of the round disks. I was also able to get a few photo's from a guy on RPF that owned a hero one to create the barrel detail, and learned that the little knob under the barrel looked like metal.

After All that work I felt that molding it, and casting parts would make for the best build instead. I feared that all the repairs, and filler could be a weak link in the build.

Good news for anyone who will want one is that I will be selling kits very soon.

Here is a few pictures of what the finished kits will look like. Note that I made a trigger assembly that could be used to press a button for those that may not want to use the blank firing revolver for any reason.

Last but not least pictures of my completed build after years of waiting.

Thanks. very sweet prop you have there. and the year's and all your work paid off big time. awesome work.:thumbsup

Of course this is good news. Nice work as usual Myron. I still have quite a few of your kits unfinished. This will be another must have. Look forward to the junkyard thread.

Not sure I will be posting in the junkyard. Ebay, Facebook, and TPZ is keeping me quite busy at the moment. You can PM me if you want one sooner.

Am i the only one wondering if its not against Rpf rules to do the last thing...
Pick up a kit from someone else .(No matter how bad or good the casting is) "Is OK"
Rebuild and change most of the details. "Is OK"
Make a mold and cast a copy for personal use. "Is OK"
Make more copys and sell those castings. "Not so Ok unless original kit maker says ok.?"

Or am i totally wrong? then i apologize.

Your not wrong. I am curious , who did the cast come from? Trying to remember who offered these. I think MustangGTR1 and also Spat and im sure a few others.

I never could get an answer to that question. I picked it up in a trade, but the guy I got it from wasn't sure where he got it from. This is a grey area for sure, and I do understand that. I was told however that it was supposed to be a casting from a screen used one, and machine marks on the casting seemed to support that.

It seems you are correct. I talked to MustangGTR1, and he does in fact believe it was one of his kits. He also gave me permission to proceed as planned. :)

Glad you were able to find out, also that is mighty white of you MustangGTR !!! lol I am surprised it was so messed up, I have one of mustangs castings and it is perfect, the screws were not in it when he cast it and both sides are the same size. I also stuck my dads 38 S&W and it is wide enough for it. Lastly both of my side panels are mirrored. Maybe you got a blem or reject casting and he only had one side of the discs.
