Building a Speeder Arcade game

Whaddup Rocky? Nothing picture worthy but there are updates.

I've ironed out the handle's support and axle system to include remote connect and disconnect allowing selective independent handle actuation. I went with a linear actuator approach and found one small enough (1" stroke) to mount to the axle directly for the split.

Axles and bearings are on hand. LA is in the post. Aluminum on hand to do the handles but I'm trying .625" PVC sheet first (been wanting to try out that material for parts as the spec sheet says it's crazy strong but machines like wood and is bendable by torch). PVC is in the post as well, along with an assortment of other odds and ends.

If the PVC is a wash I will have to pay to have the aluminum machined as I just don't have the necessary tools to execute that to standard in a timely manner.

This week I will fab up the support for the foil which is also the base of the handle support structure. Once I get the unit bench tested I'll be able to get everything spaced correctly and finish the welds on the frame.

That's my two week goal:

Handles
Handle support and axle system in place
Foil supports in place
Seat plate in place

From there I should be able to hook up the UHID and do some rough play testing just to insure my tolerances are where they need to be before I move on.

Thanks for checking up!

Posted this in your other thread and thought the guys here may like it too.
Anyway saw this in the extra`s from prometheus and thoiught of this build.
You better beat weyland!.

Bit of a while without an update. I've had to redesign the tilt mechanism for fore and aft movement - moved from a handle controlled to a seat controlled style. My playability testing didn't work out with having to lean side to side while moving the handles forward and back. More screen accurate to have the handles fixed anyway and it's more intuitive to lean forward and back while you're leaning side to side anyway.

Unfortunately this is a significant change and I'm having to address the engineering/fabrication issues before I move forward. In the meantime however I've started on the companion build to the Speeder - an Astromech unit I'm tentatively calling R2-Emu. He will be a stand alone arcade/multimedia fixed leg unit with a dome mounted projector and eventually an arcade control panel styled after jabba's barge drink tray.

Legs as of a few days ago. Since I have finished the ankles and am starting on the feet. These things are super time consuming but I think it will really bring the build to life.

Rough test fit on body. The dome is an ikea brasa shade. Acknowledge that it is a half dome and not a "bullet" dome - I'm mitigating by moving the dome rings onto the body.

I've started to block out a lot of the other body pieces I'll need and the pile is slowly building.

Additionally I already have the computer and pj on hand but need to get the sound system before I finalize the body panels as I'll be doing a modified skin to allow for speakers. Subwoofer will be staged over the skirt where the center foot usually resides.

Looooong way to go but it's fun to watch it take shape!

Ankles are done and ready for paint prep. Still have to knock out the greeblies for the upper leg and skin the feet. Battery boxes are next.

Legs are done-ish. I have a little touch up work to do (around the shoulder buttons and where the ankle meets the foot) but all in all I'm happy with the results thus far. Getting ready to start fitting components into the body and figuring out where speakers, peripheral ports, and fans will be.

Exceptional work! I have been watching your progress with great interest :devil I'd love to have a replica speeder bike all to myself. I absolutely cannot wait till this is done!

looking awesome! Many years ago 20+ a friend of mine started a build in the 80's arcade style (afterburner)- full scale with MDF. I bumped into him recently, He never did entirely finish it-I guess life just got in the way. I was so envious of him, seeing his creation take life.... but this is just beautiful. Great idea awesome work and Star Wars too. It doesnt get any better than this!!

Getting ready to start on the arcade control setup modeled loosely on the ROTJ drink tray. Here's where we're at so far.

Need to do stripes around the top of the body, add a few more panels, and do some minor touchup. Then I'll retackle the dome and get cranking on the CP.

Components installed. Used the HDMI out on the back panel to watch a movie yesterday ;) Glorious.

Getting started on the Dome tonight.

Awesome work Le, the R2 unit especially. I've been wanting to create a mobile gaming system using a R2-D2 container and yours looks great.
