budget Batman TDK ver. 3 WIP (pic heavy)

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

Hey I started working on my own cowl yesterday and here's what I've done so far.

First I took a TDK pep cowl I made myself and then also bought the plain white face mask.

Then I cut both and combined them with duct tape.

Then I added the nose from my TDK pep cowl.

Then I duct taped the whole mask inside and out.

I even added a flap in the back where I'm going to put Velcro so I can get in and out.

Now I'm ready to start applying the plumbers putty but I was wondering if there's a special kind of paint you used so that it doesn't rub off or fall apart in any way. Also for the areas you didn't use plumbers putty can you still see the duct tape if so can I use something like latex paint or a rubberizing paint to make it all smooth and hide it? Or maybe something even better than I mentioned.

wow your duct taping is really clean, using a pep file and the paper mask is a superb idea:thumbsup! i use acrylic epoxy spray paint, sticks very well and dries pretty fast, if the type of duct tape you used is the super shiny kind, lightly mist every thing first. yep places without putty will show as duct tape even after several light coats of paint, coating those areas with wood glue helps to hide the texture and edges of the duct tape, but if you spray it with plastidip im pretty sure it will cover it up better, i'll post the back of my cowl to show that you dont need to use velcro to be able to fit ones head into the cowl, the duct taped only portions gives the cowl enough flex;), please post more progress pics as your cowl develops.

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

Thanks. I think ill try spraying it with the plastidip after I use the putty and then finish with some paint. I'll keep you updated.

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

The topic title doesnt make justice to the ammount of skills here posted. Impressive the least.

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

here's where it's currently at, just need to get a hold of plastidip, i think i need to make a new neck seal as well to hide the baclava better.

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

Holy crap. This. Is. AMAZING! I was just scouring Youtube for an easy way to make a cowl within a few days, there's so many but I'll go with this! Where do u get paper masks? I've seen plastic ones, I wonder if they'd work just as good? Wow, this just has me pumped! Too bad its 3am and my Walmart is no longer 24 Hours :( lol I wish I found this sooner haha GREAT STUFF! Seriously this got me excited to try one. Or 2. Or 9!

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

thanks bro!, got the paper mask from local bookstore in the crafting section (if i convert our currency , its about a dollar), its real budget friendly and quite easy to make, so you can make as many as you like. lol ! ( this is my third attempt, fourth technically but one is a batgirl cowl for my kid, i think i'm gettin better with each attempt hahaha). ;)

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to

sick for two days...bored in the house...so did this...between meals , medicine and bed..lol

made pattern out of poster paper...freehand using reference pics from the net , mostly spidey4funs's build..

traced the patterns unto posterboard, and using mostly duct tape to keep everything together in place. oh and used vinyl carbon look sticker also (that part is still removable), will spray paint this when i'm feeling better and able to get out of the house.

Re: duct tape TDK cowl how to (Budget re-build whole suit)

got the chest painted and attached to a harness i made out of the old suit...

quite happy with how it turned out ( for a budget build :) )

Re: budget TDK ( re-build whole suit)

thanks guys! hope this budget build how-to is of use to someone on a tight budget like me...lol.

started to do the gaunts, glossy paper flyer wrapped around forearms then covered with duct tape (inside and out) ( the duct tape mannequin method)

this will be the base for the gaunts. waiting on craft foam i asked a friend to buy, to wrap over this.

cant paint it yet , non-stop rains for over two days already. will attach this to the base when i have it wrapped in craft foam already.

The fins on the gauntlets are crazy good! What did you make them out of, is that mat board material?

thanks bro...ummm.. the base for the fins is just illustration board and the material i used to create the beveled look is called "cartolina" , whose thickness is akin to cardstock or craft paper.

Re: budget TDK ( re-build whole suit)

got some more work on the gauntlets done.

scrounged some old vinyl table placemats in lieu of craftfoam..

checked to see if the base duct tape base fits ok..

spraypainted to check for areas of improvement...

now to do the other one..:lol

Re: budget TDK ( re-build whole suit)

Good choice going with the vinyl instead of the craft foam, It turned out really good! did you use a pepakura file or did you make the templates yourself?
