BTTF Hoverboards by HUVr Tech

It seems to have been made by Funny or Die. The agency that created the site kind of gave it away when they let their development server URLs leak in the sharing widgets. Twitter and Google+ are littered with links pointing to https://clients.springstudio.com/fod/huvr/ (notice "fod" in the URL) and Spring Studio have definitely done work for Funny or Die before.

This is confirmed by the CNET article which cites the assistant wardrobe costume designer's portfolio:

FUNNY OR DIE
Commercial: Back to the Future HUVR BOARDS
Talent: TONY HAWK, MOBY, TERREL OWENS, SCHOOLBOY Q, CHRISTOPHER LLOYD, etc.
Key Wardrobe: Lydia Bauer
Assistant Wardrobe: Lauren Biedenharn
Nove 2013

The entry has since been removed but you can still see it in Google's cache.

So, the only question now is why would Funny or Die go to all this trouble to launch this viral campaign?

Yep, it's from Funny or Die. I too found out earlier through Lauren Biedenharn's resume where she had listed it as her recent work, then few minutes later the info got passed around and she edited it. They clearly want it to go viral, hence don't want to reveal it's indeed a gag video. It's all a big joke, but I am digging it especially since they got more BTTF people involved.

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

Considering those are Matty Collector boards, and those things barely work as static display pieces...I'd say it's fake.

Oh yeah, and this:

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

^ Good eye! I thought that Hoverboard looked familiar. Unfortunately I know for a fact my Matty board doesn't hover LOL.

I'm just curious as to what this is all about? Is this the start to viral marketing for something? The new Nike Mags? The BTTF musical? The inclusion of Christopher Lloyd makes me very curious as to what might be going on here.

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

It very much reeks of clever viral marketing, but it's definitely got me interested.

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

I read a couple of minutes ago in io9.com that it's an viral for funny or die, they dug deeper, so no BTTF 4 (thank God!)…

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

I noticed that almost everyone loosely bends their knees when "floating", which would make no sense if the board was supporting the body. It makes perfect sense if you have a body harness and the board is providing no support as your legs dangle below you.

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

The movement was obviously a harness, by the way their bodies remained still in place, while the hoverboard moved around. And the Matty hoverboard was a giveaway too.

But it was a great video anyway, and seeing Christopher Lloyd participating made it even more fun. I love that in 2014, BTTF can still spark the imagination like this.

Why does everyone on every site I've seen this posted have to scream fake. Really? REALLY!? Hoverboards aren't a real thing?!

Re: BTTF real Hoverboard video? HURv

I wondered what exactly was the point of this viral video, and all of that plus the celebrity cameos was just for FB comments and a replica hoverboard giveaway? Seems kind of a waste of marketing effort.

This is bull****. It's almost 2015 and we don't have anything from BTTF 2. Except maye that stupid hat Marty Jr wore.:lol
