BSG Viper Nameplate Font?

I may be misremembering, but I think it's never been identified. At least, that's what I recall coming up in discussions of the font in the past.

According to various forums I've read (sorry, can't recall which ones) the font is called "Caprica" and was designed specifically for the series. As far as I know, it's unavailable for download.

My kneejerk reaction would be that it's probably modified off of a base font though obviously it could also be done from scratch too...

I can't imagine it'd be very difficult to recreate if there were enough good reference of it. I'm sure somebody will do it eventually.

If it IS by chance a modified existing font, all you'd have to do is figure out what it was modified from.

I've created my own "from scratch" typefaces for specific design jobs in the past but more often than not I tend to modify existing typefaces. That's why I'm wondering if maybe it's just modified... It'd be interesting to know if that's the case or if it's a completely original typeface.

What's the story behind this pic? Was Kevin in an episode? :lol
According to Smith's blog, for about 24 hours he was scheduled to direct an episode of BSG. The short version is Smith ran into Executive Producer David Eick in Canada while he (Smith) was filming the pilot episode of Reaper. During their conversation Eick mentioned having Smith direct an episode, to which he replied "I'd love to." A month later Smith was contacted by the agency that represents him to inform him an official offer had been made; Smith asked for a few days to think it over (to contemplate whether or not he felt he really could direct an episode), and by the time he agreed to direct he discovered the offer no longer existed. He then received an extremely apologetic e-mail from Eick, in which he stated a series of errors had been made and that the episode they wanted Smith to direct had been double-booked.

He doesn't explain the photos, but here's the full story as told by Smith:

BTW, before anyone who finds "foul" language objectionable clicks on that link...well, you've been warned.

Anyone know the font used big guy is pointing to? Thanks in advance. :)

You cannot get that font anywhere for download. My sources tell me it was created from scratch by the art department and is currently only in existence as a vector file.

Thanks to all who replied. =) I learned a few things here.

Cool site motivealloy.

Thats a awesome pic of kevin Smith!!!

Agreed. Somebody cold make a small fortune shipping the cockpit section of the fuselage around to conventions. They cold supply a flightsuit to the congoers, have them pose by the section and digitally impose their names and callsigns onto a blank plaque.

How cool would that be to have your very own pic next to your very own ship?

I just registered on this forum for the sole purpose of telling everyone that I found the font! it is called "HUSKER" and i found it here! FontStruct | Husker

I cross referenced it with the image and from what i can tell, if it isn't the same font, it is 98% there! It's the best I could do researching for a few days!

Husker is pretty close, but for the few obsessive perfectionists here, we have recreated it pretty much pixel by pixel.

I've used Husker for the nameplates I've drawn up for a Viper Mk II profile drawing I've been (slowly) working on, but I'd be interested in an even more accurate font if possible.

Found this a few minutes ago after seeing this thread.

The typeface is actually an off-the-shelf font available as part of the Signlab program made by CADlink. The typeface is named... wait for it... “Spaceage," yes you read that right!

BSG sign writer Peter Hickey modified the typeface and tweaked characters depending on application. Only the uppercase letters were used for the signs and markings created for the series. Interestingly the very next typeface after Spaceage on the font folio shown below is “Stop”, which was the typeface used on the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica TV series.

If I had only known a few years back. :facepalm I checked my finished product against that one and I was spot on. Well, except for the "Q" - I could never find sample of that, so I had to estimate.

I remember that one. It popped up first a few months ago. Grabbed it and compared it, but didn't make the switch. It's a lot taller then Husker in any given font size and since I had everything nicely laid out, I was too lazy at the time to make the switch!

I really should though...:facepalm

EDIT: Through together a comparison. Same exact nameplate file, just swapped fonts. The Galactica-Guise font lacks spaces and quotes, so both of those are manipulated (the former erased, the latter copied from Husker). In this one Husker is on top, GG on the bottom. You'll note how much narrower the latter is and uneven on tops and bottoms. The cutouts in the horizontal parts of the letters are a lot more pronounced too. I like it, though erasing the "DEMO" box from every space is going to be tedious!

Anyone know where one might be able to purchase the font to get rid of the "DEMO" spaces?
