Broke my pair of Real Nike Mags

does anyone know how i could fix them? or what type of engineer i'd have to go see to get them fixed? the shoes look fine except when you turn them on, the bottom part of the left shoe does not turn on. I'm talking about the side sole glow, not the 3-battery lights. I don't want to open the shoe up and possibly destroy them completely. What do you guys think the problem is? That a wire got disconnected maybe?

I say you're screwed. Once someone opens them you run the risk of ruining them. I hope you didn't pay a lot for them.

Nike said they can't do anything about it

thats a bit stupid and ridiculous I think.
Considering there are only 1510 pairs in existence, you would think they would have some sort of service to repair them, especially considering their price.

Your best bet is to find someone who is knowledgeable in electronics and show it to them.
If the electronics/wiring is inside the white ankle piece, then you may not have to open the entire shoe.

But it could be that the electronics have been built into the sole underneath. Nobody knows, I don't think i've ever heard or seen of anyone who's actually opened up these shoes. Considering their price, i doubt there is even a single person who has done it.

Nike put a limited 3 month warranty on these. They also specifically stated that these were Prop Replicas. These are not exactly meant to be worn. I'm sorry to say but you are screwed. Most likely the EL panel has come disconnected or the inverter PCB board for the electronic has failed. There is NO WAY to remedy this without tearing the shoe apart. Sorry to hear this.

^ exactly. the 3 months have passed so Nike cannot do anything.

I played around with the shoe, I turned it on, and I bent the side of the shoe towards the light on the side, and it started lighting on and off, so I do think it is a wiring issue.

Am I looking for an 'electrician' in my area to open this apart and re-wire it to fix it? I don't mind it getting opened up as long as it can get glued/sewn back up together.

Hmmm. I don't think an electrician would know how to do this. You need someone like an electrical engineer that works in micro electronics, custom PCB boards and circuit boards. If I had to open these shoes up, start with the inside of the shoe. CAREFULLY cut open the inside midsole to reveal what's under the white area that is under the grey sole insert. More than likely there are electronics, wires and possibly the battery in there. There are most likely more wires and circuit boards in the ankle buckle. I would SO love to see the insides of these electronics.

BTW, did you wear yours out? If so how long have you worn them for (distance).

Or a shoe repair place. My bet is a broken wire probably where its soldered to the wires in the sole. Xacto knife and CARFULLY pull apart the sole. Thats if you cannot reach it from going from the insert.

A shoe repair place won't know anything about these shoes. They are specially made and a shoe repair place wouldn't even know where to start.

I only wore them maybe on 10 occasions for 6 hours at a time. They weren't lit up the whole time for each of those outings. I was jaywalking to cross the street and there were a few cars speeding, so I started jogging really hard. When I got inside the coffee shop, the lights were working, I sat down, and I was getting comfortable, then all of a sudden, the light just went off. I think I just had bad luck because I know someone whose worn them way more and has played games of pick up basketball in them. Thanks for the advice though. I'll have to find an engineer of that sort somehow. And like you said, a shoe repair place definitely will not be able to fix this.

Wasn't that asking for trouble? As said before Nike stated these where replica props. I've seen a couple of these genuine Mags hit the marketplace again with malfunctioning lights, so it's not an isolated case.
It just demonstrates the price/quality is way out of whack.
Hope you can get it fixed.

Hi all

Its August 2024 and I have just opened up a faulty 2011 Nike Mag, and I have photos and videos = should anyone want to see them at any point.
This particular shoe has a faulty charge socket, battery and a break in one of the flexible circuit boards which are under the white fabric sole (hint -- cut it open incredibly carefully - whilst lifting the fabric - as the circuit boards are directly under it, in various directions).

I have videos on my youtube channel - Griceyboy, plus also on the Facebook group, Nike Mag Repair and Upgrade.

Thanks all, i'm happy to share all my photos and research work into these repairs .
