Brass pipe no longer available

So I'm collecting the bits and pieces to make a stormtrooper blaster and yesterday I went to Lowe's to get the pipe and caps. I had already gone to a Home Depot to get some other stuff and checked there and they didn't have any kind of brass or chromed sink pipe, much less anything long enough to do a trooper blaster. I've always found better selection at Lowe's, but I was surprised to find out that they didn't have any brass pipe either. Apparently they changed suppliers and don't stock it anymore. On top of that, they didn't even have any PVC pipe with the appropriate OD. I was just starting to plan a steampunk saber as well, but it seems I'll have to cancel that plan as it required brass pipe. Anybody have any recommendations?

Oh, and the local ACE hardware stores have terrible selection of anything useful.

It does seem that the majority of home centers and hardware stores have rapidly become loaded with absolutely everything you DON'T need.

Hi Risu,

In my area we have a metal salvage company. They reclaim pipe and other various forms of metal. Even titanium bar. :love They cut it to length, but might have a minimum amount to buy. Maybe there is something like that in your area?

I don't know, I go to a sheet metal place a lot, but they don't stock anything other than steel really. I'm in Long Beach, so there's bound to be a place like that within 30 miles or so. I'll probably do some digging for such a place once I finish up some of my other projects, I've got more than enough on my plate right now, it was probably a good thing I couldn't find the pipes, haha.

McMaster Carr is in SanteFe Springs.

Also, there should be a bunch of plumbing supply houses around.

There's a great mom-n-pop store in downey (710/firestone)
called "All American". They have tons of stuff.
HD opened a store next to it years ago, but the family store is still going strong.

Based on that address, I think that might have been the place an employee at HD recommended, I'll have to check it out now that I know its RPF approved.

It does, a bit. But I've dealt with them from time to time, and they've always had what I needed. Plus, any compnay whose site has both a FAQ and an RAQ gets bonus points...:D

I use True Value Hardware stores. They have always had a much more impressive collection of plumbing supplies than any Lowes or Home Depot I have ever gone to. And they carry all the cool little things in the droors that make the best greebles. Also more than Lowes or Home Depot.

Other than that, ther are actual plumbing supply stores around. You could shop around those places.

What size and style are you looking for? Also, how is it going onto the blaster? In other words, what's the important dimension here, inside or outside diameter? If it's outside diameter that you're looking for, the plastic drain tube (it's not pipe, because of the wall thickness) would be the same OD, so it can fit the older, standard connections. I've seen, and used, the 1-1/4"OD tube as well as the 1-1/2"OD tubes for saber handles, but find that for me, the 1-3/8"OD brass tube is the most comfortable size for my hand.

As a retired master plumber, and a former Lowe's employee, I'm surprised your local store isn't carrying such a commonly used item. However, these types of jobs were handled long before the box stores came on the scene, and still can be. Look in your local yellow pages for a plumbing supply store, and the older, the better- they'll have the experience to walk you through anything you might not know the name of, or what lengths it comes in, etc.

If you post pics of what you have, I'd be happy to help if I can, or you can PM me. btw, if you go looking for 1-3/8" tube, it's a size used only on the old clawfoot bathtubs, and is rarely used anymore- another reason to seek out an old mom and pop type supply house- ask around to see where the plumbing contractors go, then go there yourself.

Lowe's didn't even stock the plastic tube in a long enough piece for the blaster. The longest brass pipe they had was 4 inches long, with a quarter inch of threads at each end. The employee said the new supplier just doesn't carry that stuff, that it's outdated, it's really unfortunate. I think I'm going to seek out that store on 710 and firestone mentioned earlier, they may even have some other cool bits and pieces I could throw onto the saber.
