sorry to rant.....but i hate it when people pass off work as their own...this 17 year old boy has tried saying its all his "own work"...not saying that the files he has used for his foam suit have come from (more than likely from here) this site....here's the link, lemmee know what you all think...i'm rather slightly wound up from this story!!! grrrrrrrrr lol...

BBC News - 'Iron Man' boy seeks costume career

I'm not going to rant at all, if the kid gets the attention of BBC then so be it. What I think is funny is how this community has existed for so long and how large it is, and that there have been so many amazing builds here, Iron Man and otherwise; and BBC just finally does something on it lol.

i know what you're saying lol....but why didnt he give a shout out to the people that helped....i can see he's used someone elses foam files, not his own as he's trying to say...and where would he get the idea to use foam?...here!!! lol...i'm gonna get my suit done and i'll totally big up therpf.com :)

I know where your coming from he has a post on the forum I think its titled Iron man going viral or some thing like that I saw the article on facebook I think it was metro newspaper, I thought it a bit wrong not to metion that it was taken from foam templates and not giving mention to the people who made them but there you go, Also doing commissions from what I read. Each to their own though

WOW...He evens says that the one he built doesnt have any lights what so ever...someone get the BBC in touch with Master LEE or STEALTH just to name a couple of guys...LOL...i'm all for exposure for the craft and its great but this sets this cat up to be some sort of pioneer in homemade iron man suit builds...thats not cool...I see tons of peeps on this site from the UK who are far more advanced...im putting on my Iron Patriot Armor at 60% completion and finding this nut bag...as soon as I install my jet pack...HA HA!!

I think the point isn't to insult the kid, sure not giving credit to where he found files and maybe getting a bit of exposure for RPF is shameful. However, to bash him is just as shameful and tasteless. Move beyond it and focus on improving your own builds, if you let it bother you to that extreme of a degree it shows more jealousy and envy then disappointment in how he handled the interview.

As to the question concerning cost, no 2000 seems extremely high considering the number of items he left out such as closing off the cod, elbows, knee's, etc. However, it is not a bad build I just see it as incomplete.

theres no jealousy on my part....like jayart says its setting him up to be a pioneer...if it wasn't for people like stealth or master lee, then i don't think half the people on here would have suits...he just makes it sound like it was all freehand, not done from other peoples hard work

Exactly my point...but I hear you VERTIGO...lets move on...not much to expect from a 17 yr old...we were all there at one point...let him enjoy his lime light...Iron Legion Unite!! :ninja "i was never here" :ninja

a costume career from pepakura foam files and tutorials others have made?

That's not a career, it's a hobby.
He's just young and isn't mature enough to actually be humble and acknowledge the community and what not.

If someone was at that age getting attention, I can imagine they have no idea how to handle it and it becomes an issue of

"Damn, here's my ticket!" That's not a reality though.

To this day I consider myself a guy with a hobby. That's all.

Because we all know breakdancing is what pays the bills :p

Hm. I may have missed something, but no where in that ridiculously short excuse of a news article have I read anything of that kid claiming to have done this thing entirely on his own. On the contrary, he mentions "labor costs" and "Google helped a lot". True, no precise source is given, but do you really think those five or so lines of text they quote is all the kid ever said about his project? If you wanna rant about anything, I'd say rather have a go at the quality of today's journalism. They never tell the whole story. ;)

I found some comments he's replied to stating the helmet was the only part that was pepakura. Which in turn, discredits Darkside501st completely.

He Just fell lucky as the film has been released here, so the BBC were looking for associated stories and picked this up , I think he should have mentioned the RPF since that's where he got all his advice and information from, claiming all the credit ( read his facebook pages) , when it's made out of foam, as other have mentioned it's incomplete ,no electronics -no nothing, it's just his 15 minutes of fame. We should have had more turn up , suited at the premiere then we'd ( RPF) would have got a mention.

Re: "boy builds Iron Man suit"

Well now. I definitely did not expect this kind of response.
I did acknowledge I used 3d files from the internet, however, most of the journalists did not understand what pepakura was when I tried to explain it to them. They also had no idea who Darkside was. So I gave up trying to explain. To be honest, I have been contacted by loads of journalists, and was surprised, I asked, so many people make better suits than me? why so much attention. I'm guessing maybe my age? There is a similar story of a 16 year old who build a pep suit in america, on stan winston school of character art's facebook page and youtube. STEALTH, No-one understands when I try to explain that the foam templates and pep are the same thing.

Most importantly: I did say a big shout out to Stealth and Darkside in my thread, because you guys understand and know who these people are!

I have been misquoted so many times. when I tried to explain the process, (especially on mashable.com -from which most articles were birthed), they ignored and condensed my explanations.

I never expected my suit to become this Viral, like I said. If I have offended anyone directly, I do apologise. I never claimed it was 'all my own work'

No. No they don't :')

And 5 minutes ago, he just fixed that. The most recent post on his facebook page cites Darkside's thread on the RPF as the place to get templates. So let's move on and let this kid enjoy some limelight because it's a pretty sweet looking Mark VII.

Re: "boy builds Iron Man suit"

I just was messaged by "Dadpool" from this forum, who sent me a video from his own news story in Australia about his Iron Man suit. He's a good man and mentioned that the news team didn't put in the parts where he was talking about the 3D modellers and their work and such and pepakura etc.

They really don't care to hear those things so in his defence., it makes more sense now.

I apologize dude.
