Bone Necklace - Finished

I started the work for my pred today and after sanding, refilling and resanding my P2 Biomask I went for dinner.

Thankfully it was chicken on the menu and after negotiating with my campus chef if I could grab a load of the leg bones (turns out he thinks making a bone necklace is pretty cool, even if it had nothing to do with a predator costume) I added them to a bucket of boiling water, bleach and a rabbit skull.

The rabbit probably died of mixi, my uni is surrounded by them and a guy in my year saw it and gave it to me when I told him about project pred.

Do you guys ever just have mates turn up at your door with bits of dead animal?

A genuine 'saw this and thought of you' moment.

I left the bones in the hot bleach for a good few hours to disinfect, then got to scraping any remaining flesh or cartalidge of the bones with a dinner knife... for some reason I decided to do this in my bathroom sink.

Tommorow morning I'll have enough time to drill some holes in the bones before I head off to Ipswich for the weekend.

Just a suggestion, after the bones are out of the bleach, I would strongly recommend covering them in PVA glue, to seal them.
I found that with my bones, they started to crack, and be very weak as the acidity in the bleach starts to burn them away. It dries clear, and gives it a nice finish.
Nice job so far!

Cool!

Everytime I start searching for trophies, my folks usually jsut give me a dirty look that says "dead animals stay outside."

Speaking of trophies..... any idea how a deer skull can work with a suit? It's a 10-pointer.

Ta boss, I'm planning on picking up some matt and gloss varnish spray cans from back home this weekend for sealing the bones and paint jobs on armour and skinparts. I'll give the KFC bling a lick aswell.

just an idea.......i got some sculpey bake clay and moulded some teeth....made some holes in them and boiled for ten minutes on usurpers advice. painted and sanded then let them sit in some brown acrylic and i was well happy with the result......just thought id share.
ggod call on KFC i may start eating out more and collecting the bones..... :)

I just collect mine straight of the mountainside. Most of the time, they're clean as a whistle. I just give em a quick bath in medical disinfectant and warm water. They don't soften and break up like they do in bleach.

Easy all,

I got back from Ipswich this afternoon and had some free time to work on the Bone Necklace:

Here's me preparing to drill some holes in some chicken bones I prepared earlier
5___Bone_Clamped___Drilled.JPG

I gently clamped the bones in a vice (make sure you don't crush them) and drilled holes through each of the chicken bones

7___Shoe_Lace.JPG

In order to make the stringy/twiney look of the necklace I took a spare set of shoelaces that came with a pair of skate trainers
8___Cut_Ends_off_of_Laces.JPG

Cut the plastic diped ends off
9___Shredded_Lace.JPG

and shredded them. In order to do this I cut an incersion in one end of the lace (about 6 inches) then pulled the lace appart... as you can see you get left with the inner threads and strands seperateed from the woven lace casing.
10___One_end_of_lace_in_clamp.JPG

Discarding the outer casing, I clamped the thick wooly strands tightly at one end
11___Other_end_tied_round_a_screwdriver.JPG

and tying the other end around a screwdriver, spun them into a tight thread.

'Here's one I made earlier!'

I burnt the screwdriver end of the necklace to stop it from untwisting itself...
14___It__s_hard_to_light_a_match__hold_a_string_taught_and_take_photos_at_the_same_time.JPG

...I'd recomend using a lighter because it's pretty tricky trying to hold the threads tight and strike matches and burn the string all at the same time.
15___Bones_on_Necklace.JPG

with the shrunk, hard, burnt end acting like a needle, you can thread the bones along.

16___Burn_the_left.JPG

then you can burn the left and right ends of the necklace to the desired length, again making sure that the necklace won't unravel.

Tie both ends together at the back with a simple knot, burn it tight (it might be a realy good idea to make sure you measure enough string to get over your head before you burn/cut etc) and seal the bones with a healthy dose of gloss varnish spray for that shiney, humid trophy look.
