Blomkamp's Starship Troopers

I don't know if the book meets the definition of fascist but I certainly got the impression of it depicting a very authoritarian society.

The problem with doing anything like that in 2025 is that the terms are so muddied now. People think fascist means "someone I don't agree with". Trying to really put that idea across would go over a large group of peoples' heads.

I haven't read the book yet, but I'm definitely interested in this.

It was somewhat authoritarian only in that suffrage was granted only to those who had served. In the book, this meant any kind of Federal service, but because of the movie, many interpreted this to mean only military service counted. In the book they made it clear that if you wanted to serve, you could, no matter what. Regardless of your intelligence or physical capabilities, if you wanted to serve they'd find a way for you to serve. Once you did your service and were discharged you would then get the right to vote. It was also mentioned that those who chose not to serve were not treated as second class citizen in any way, shape, or form,, you just couldn't vote. You weren't discriminated against, you had all other rights as a citizen, the right to vote was the only difference.

IIRC the book also featured hanging as the penalty for desertion. But the last time I read it was 30 years ago when the movie came out. For the record, I enjoyed both.

As for the current project (if it happens), I'd be happy if the story passably resembled the book, and if it featured the Skinnies and jumpsuits.

And Johnny has to say "on the bounce!" at least once. :D

Hanging is *not* the penalty for desertion in the book. The book quite clearly says, no one looks for you. No one cares if you desert. Everyone is a volunteer.

One person is hung hanged in the book. He did desert, but he was hung hanged for murdering someone, after he deserted.

There was an animated show from 1999 called Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles that is probably the closest we are ever going to get to the novel. It was one of the first computer animated shows.

It also made some changes from the book, but was way closer in tone to the book than the PV film. I love the PV film, but it really had nothing to do with the book, other than earth was at war with the bugs and it used some book character names.

Based on his last few films, I have zero interest in seeing how Blomkamp will mess this up.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings on that too. I keep hoping the Blomkamp of District 9 will show up, but after Chappie I don't know. We'll see. I'll likely wait for it to hit streaming in any event, like I do almost everything these days. The last movie my wife and I went to was Oppenheimer, and it takes something on that level to get us to shell out the confiscatory cost of going to the theater these days.
