Black Widow [The Avengers (2012)] - DragonCon 2013

Re: WIP - Black Widow [The Avengers (2012)]

Thanks, Alan. =) It's definitely one of the most detailed builds I've ever done. I'd hoped to be finished as of last week, but didn't seem to work that way. For now, just trying for tomorrow!

No problem, miss! Just keep at it, but no need to rush! :)

Re: WIP - Black Widow [The Avengers (2012)]

Okay, so... the suit is about 90% complete, with only hems, patches, and a bit of elastic for stirrups remaining. Also got the belt done tonight, so a peek:

Tried the suit on with the holster rig, gloves, and bites -- looking pretty good. And just about got my hair right today, too. =)

Hoping to be done with all the odds and ends by tomorrow evening so I can concentrate on packing!

Great to hear! Can't wait to see it finished and hope you have a fantastic time at the Con!

Also I'm curious, even though I'm sure I'll answer my own question, but I see your username has "ginger" in it so I assume you're already a redhead, right? Haha. If so, then that saves a step of having to dye your hair or prepare a wig. :lol

Sooo close. Just finished hemming the pantlegs and sleeves. Have a little handwork to do on the zipper, and still figuring how to get the patches on. They're a cast silicon of some kind, with fabric backing. The suit is a bit slick, with the lamination, so I'm not sure how best to adhere it. Thinking of very carefully trying to some Heat'n'Bond. I'm afraid, however, that might not hold as well as I need it to. And I've had no luck with fabric glue in the past. =\

And yeah, Alan, I'm a redhead. =D I did go and have it amped up a few notches for this, so it's a bit more "screen accurate," though the cut is a bit longer than hers. The "and very ginger" comes from the Doctor Who ep, "The Christmas Invasion," where Ten proclaims himself "rude and not ginger." I decided along the way that, when I get irritated, I was "rude and very ginger." It worked for me!

I keep trying to get my redhead wife to cosplay black widow (no luck yet). Looking forward to seeing the end result.
As to the glue (and keep in mind I have close to no experience in glueing material) - will silicone not work? - that stuff sticks to anything - although it takes at least 24 hours to dry. just a thought.

Re: WIP - Black Widow [The Avengers (2012)]

Jax -- the patches I bought from fellow RPF member Aeryn had some fabric on the back of them. I was able to stitch through the fabric and sew them on securely. They stick out a bit more than I'd like, but they're not going anywhere and I can reuse them when/if I have to remake the bodysuit. And, stitching them on securely also means they contour with my arm. =)

...and now? The final result! The pic doesn't show as much detail, and I feel I look a bit pudgy, but I've yet to have many pictures taken where I'm completely happy with the result. We purchased a multi-pass from DC, so in addition to my arrangements with Stacy over at SGH Photography, we were able to get shots done with Bryan Humphrey. This is what I consider the money shot from the Mad Scientist, with DH as Hawkeye:

Hopefully, I can share my shots from SGH soon as well. Can't wait to see the backgrounds and scenes he adds to what he got. I'm consistently amazed at what he can do with a simple hall costume photo, even.

I did learn that the elastic works well, but will need some reinforcement to keep the holsters stable. I might have to drop back to using webbing, though I'm hesitant to do so. Keeping them too loose wears on the leg of the bodysuit, which will reduce the life of the costume. And, while I can get more of the dotted spandex, I'm having trouble locating more of the herringbone fold over elastic. =\

I'm also going to try and amp up my cardio. I've got the time to train like a movie star; might as well take advantage!

Looks great! I really liked using the elastic for my straps on the holster, worked much better than the regular nylon webbing, the straps stayed in place on my legs without having to consistently adjusting them.

What did you search to find the instructions for the belt keepers? I love the look you achieved and am wondering where you locating the pattern. I have been searching for quite a while with no luck.

Sorry for the slow response, but I've been ill and travelling quite a bit (or ill because I've been travelling? Hah.). I actually drafted the pattern myself, based on the high-res pics I'd collected. I did a bit of a tutorial on Pinterest, though I think the pics ended up in the wrong order on the board. Maybe it will help?

Good luck!
