Black Pearl - Captain's Room

Should you do some sort of indirect lighting (definitely on a dimmer switch) from the ceiling between the mural and the cabin wall? The view will look odd if the island in the distance is only lit through the windows from the lights in the room... if anything, light should shine (at least a bit) through the windows *into* the room... just a thought. :)

Also figured that'd be easier to add before the wall is finished than it would be afterwards...
 
Hi everybody.

Well... as Jakob said, mainly it was me who painted the island, so thank you for your praise.
And it was me who did the map of the Caribbean Sea which caused all this :rolleyes
I thought it would be a great birthday present for Jakob... (yes, I KNEW it would not fit into the room :D )

There will be an indirect light behind the wall - Jakob planned this with the main idea to build a diagonal wall. My first plans for the room just included three windows at the flat wall and the caribbean island behind them.
Jakob took my plans and changed them (at this time I told him, he would be crazy trying to build a diagonal wall..)
However, it worked and I hope we will manage to finish the last mahogany wall tomorrow and the bed on Saturday and maybe a desk next week (which I haven't even planned yet... so fingers crossed.)

You don't have to wait long WebChief...

Today we finished most of the panels on the walls. On the upcoming pictures you'll get a closer look at the "behind" of all this:

Here I'll show you how we want to realise the ship's windows. They are simply wodden frames usually used in the garden for flowers to twine up. I never knew how full of ideas a do-it-yourself-store can be :D

Tomorrow we will start building the bed and next week -fingers crossed- maybe the desk and the dimmed (thanks for that idea LZeitgeist :) ) lights behind the sideboard...
 
Oh great. I was foolish enough to show this to my GF and now she wants a POTC themed HT :p Keep the photos coming and great work both of you.

Is the lattice work (window frame) pressure treated? If so, is it kiln dried? If not, you'll have to let it dry out for at least a couple of weeks before staining it. Check with the home center to see what kind of wood it is. Typically kiln dried wood says KDAT (kiln dried at treatment).

Of course, you may already know this - if so, ignore me ;)

When you say build a bed and desk, do you mean build them such that they follow the general time period, or build them so that they appear to be parts of the ship?

Nice deal, I have never seen someone so ambitious in a room project, this is killer. Nice craftsmanship as well.

We bought the windows some weeks ago and layed them in a shelter for storage and drying. Before staining and attaching them to the walls I'll sand them of course. Thanks for your advice :)

We want to build the bed and desk to fit the time period. They will tight-fit into the cabin and be connected to the sideboard and walls. The photo showing me and one of the windows also shows the corner where the desk is planned to be so when sitting at the desk and working I'll have a glorious view outside the artifical windows :)
 
i know this is a little out there but what would really add to the overall experince at least for me personally would be for a small fan of some sort tucked away somewere to provide a slight breeze as if you opened the windows on your ship :) just throwing an idea out there.
 
That is awesome. If you are taking suggestions- I had an alarm clock that would continously play the sound of seagulls and waves lapping against the shore. That might make a nice addition if you can find one. I don't recall who made it but it was cheap.
 
Hey are you going to put lights inbetween the wall and the ship? Even if you don't do that, it is going to be awesome.
 
That is awesome. The island looks real and so does the "ship". Will be watching this for further updates
